🏙️ @aklcouncil is planning a coordinated programme of work in Downtown Auckland to be delivered between 2026 and 2031.

Once dominated by traffic and cut off from the rest of the city, Downtown is being reimagined and regenerated as a vibrant space for connection and community.

 This means:
🔄 Stronger connections between the city and waterfront.
 🚍 Better public transport.
🛣️ More welcoming public spaces and improved streets.
🏘️ A downtown that supports local residents, businesses and access.

The opportunity for you to have your say on this project are open now until October 31.

One Year On: Watercare's Queen Street Tunnelling Milestone 👏

This month marks one year since Watercare's micro tunnel boring machine (mTBM) completed its final underground run beneath Queen Street, successfully installing a critical section of Auckland City's future wastewater network.

After three months tunnelling beneath the city centre, the machine reached its destination ahead of schedule, navigating volcanic scoria and sand deposited by the Rangipuke / Albert Park volcano around 145,000 years ago.

The milestone was made possible through the work of @watercare_nz and its main delivery partners, @fultonhogan.nz and @mcconnell_dowell.

Pictured here are McConnell Dowell tunnelling team members Michael Brown and Aimee Blackmore, standing beside the mTBM cutter head at the completion of its Queen Street tunnel breakthrough, shortly before it was dismantled.

Today, works continue further south along Queen Street between Mayoral Drive and Waverley Street, where utility and services relocations are underway to prepare for the next section of wastewater pipeline installation.

While much of the project's most significant work remains out of sight beneath the street, it forms a vital part of upgrading Auckland's infrastructure, improving network resilience, and supporting the future growth of the city centre. by @audoakl

🏗️ We had a big delivery onsite at the Waiapu Precinct construction site in #Onehunga this week!

The stairs that join the different levels of the precinct were delivered and have begun being installed. These will connect the lower supermarket level, with the middle playground level, and upper level that leads to Onehunga Mall.

We've also been hard at work on a new rock wall next to St Peters Church. This work is all leading into a big part of the area being completed around the end of October.

When complete, the Waiapu Precinct will provide a more inviting and well-connected town centre area for Onehunga, along with provision for a new supermarket and future housing. The project includes the creation of new green spaces, a public plaza, a family-friendly play space, infrastructure upgrades, and improved walking and cycling connections with Onehunga Mall.

Northcote’s new greenway, Te Ara Awataha, improves local travel choices whilst helping to regenerate nature and reduce the risk of flooding. 👏🌱

We’re working closely with Kaipātiki Local Board on Northcote Town Centre’s revitalisation, and one of the ways we’re delivering this is Te Ara Awataha – a collaborative project, where we recently finished the town centre section to complete its 1.5km length.

The greenway combines a safe, off-road walking and cycling path with environmental restoration, stormwater management, and outdoor recreation space – all while connecting the town centre, schools, and homes along the way.

A big thank you to our project partners Kāinga Ora, mana whenua, Kaipātiki Local Board, local community organisations and volunteers for everyone’s mahi. The project will be fully complete when we finish the upgrade of Northcote’s Puāwai Cadness Reserve in late 2027.

🚶🚴 A new pathway is planned for Panmure to make it safer and easier for people on bikes and pedestrians to get between Maungarei (Mt Wellington) and the town centre.

The project is due to start construction early next year and has been developed in collaboration with the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board (@aucklandcouncil_local), mana whenua, @akltransport, @aklcouncil Healthy Waters and the Tūpuna Maunga Authority.

The Maungarei Connection will also improve stormwater infrastructure along the route, with better drainage, and new garden beds.

The project is part of our plans to revitalise the town centre over the next 10 years to enhance Panmure as a great place to live, visit and do business.

Panmure is a vibrant and diverse place, renowned for its wonderful natural features and cherished for its role in bringing together the people of Tāmaki.
