Double Gold for Public Art at the 2026 Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards

We’re thrilled to celebrate two outstanding public art projects that have been awarded Gold at this year’s Best Design Awards:

✨ Waka Moana – Gold | Toitanga
Led by artist Graham Tipene (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Hauā, Ngāti Manu) in collaboration with LandLAB, Waka Moana celebrates identity, place and connection to Te Waitematā through a powerful public artwork inspired by Māori voyaging
 traditions.

✨ Te Kōpua o Hiku – Gold | Spatial Lighting
Created by artists Janine Williams (Ngāti Pāoa, Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara, Ngāti Mahuta) and Shannon Novak (of Croatian descent) in collaboration with Iion, Te Kōpua o Hiku transforms infrastructure into a striking cultural experience, connecting communities
across the Panmure Basin through art, light and storytelling.

These Gold Awards recognise the creativity, cultural leadership and collaboration of artists, mana whenua, designers, project partners and council teams who have created enduring public places that celebrate the stories and identity of Tāmaki Makaurau.

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘪 is now pink! On until Sunday 9 October.

For the 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘪, 𝘞𝘩𝘢̄𝘯𝘢𝘶 & 𝘗𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘮𝘴 event, artist Janine Williams invited crochet artists extraordinaire, Lissy and Rudi Robinson-Cole to lead a joyful community celebration in honour of her 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘪 artwork.

Installed on the Gantry in Silo Park, 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘪 is inspired by the traditional Māori string game and reflects the connection between ancient knowledge and contemporary innovation.

On this unique day, whānau, tamariki and the wider community came together for an afternoon and evening of colourful pom pom making, live music, storytelling, and shared kai.

At sunset, pompoms glowed under UV light and in honour of the collaboration between artist Janine Williams and Lissy and Rudi Robinson-Cole, the 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘪 artwork was transformed into the vibrant pink.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this a memorable day. 💙✨

🏙️ @aklcouncil is planning a coordinated programme of work in Downtown Auckland to be delivered between 2026 and 2031.

Once dominated by traffic and cut off from the rest of the city, Downtown is being reimagined and regenerated as a vibrant space for connection and community.

 This means:
🔄 Stronger connections between the city and waterfront.
 🚍 Better public transport.
🛣️ More welcoming public spaces and improved streets.
🏘️ A downtown that supports local residents, businesses and access.

The opportunity for you to have your say on this project are open now until October 31.
