Happy beautiful new year 💫
It’s 39 degrees C in Perth today ☀️

Self love and acceptance doesn’t come easily for me. As a perfectionist from childhood, I set the bar for myself high and don’t take days off.

I work best under pressure, however, as I get older, the expectations I place on myself, the opinion of others and attachment to outcomes rather than my presence along the journey can negatively impact my state of mind.

My intention for 2025 is to enjoy practice without self-judgement, allow myself more self-acceptance with less self-criticism and to celebrate how far I’ve come ♥️

Reflecting back on a year of personal growth, overcoming self-doubt and learning lots as I transition into the new year, full of gratitude for my practice and Inside Flow, for my perfectly imperfect body which allows me to move with purpose.

Looking forward to sharing this joyful practice with my clients and Flowmates @performancepilates

SVADHYAYA | The practice of self-study 🧘🏻‍♀️

As Mental Health Week in WA comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on one of the five Niyamas of yoga philosophy ~ Svadhyaya ~ the practice of self-study and self-reflection.

It’s one of the most relevant yoga teachings for me right now.

Recently, I was listening to psychiatrist @drjudithjoseph talking about her book High Functioning, and how being constantly busy, productive and achievement-focused can sometimes mask what we’re feeling underneath. It made me think about my own patterns.

I’ve always been a doer.

I love my work, teaching, training, travelling, learning, creating, setting myself new goals. There’s always another project, another adventure, another challenge. And genuinely, I love that part of myself.

But I’ve started wondering whether constantly doing has also become one of my rituals. Something I turn to when life feels uncertain or uncomfortable.

Then 2 months ago, life pressed pause. Breast cancer. Surgery. Recovery. Treatment. An unexpected sabbatical.
Suddenly, my biggest goal was simply to heal.

And through this unexpected time away, I’ve been learning something about myself …
I don’t need to be achieving something to be doing something worthwhile.

Rest is important. Healing takes time. And sometimes doing absolutely nothing is exactly what I need.

Svadhyaya isn’t about judging ourselves or changing everything about who we are.
It’s about looking within. Recognising our patterns. Understanding ourselves a little better.

I’m still a seeker.
Still curious.
Still dreaming about my next adventure.
But I’m learning to make more room for simply being.

Because looking after our mental health isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes it’s about understanding what we need and giving ourselves permission to do less 🩷

Another lesson from my Sabbatical Diaries✨

Two weeks into endocrine therapy …

And the next stage of my breast cancer journey involves learning about a very different kind of AI 🤖😅

Aromatase Inhibitors.

Because my tumour was hormone receptor positive, oestrogen is part of the story. After surgery and radiotherapy, this is the quieter but much longer part of my treatment.

One little tablet each morning …
For the next five years.

My new normal 🫶🏼

Not going to lie, the list of known side effects of Medical Menopause was freaking me out! Joint pain and stiffness, muscle aches, fatigue, hot flushes, sleep changes, cardiovascular risks and osteoporosis.

So, I’m focusing on what I can control.

Moving. Getting stronger. Building strength and loading my bones. Eating well. Getting enough sleep. And continuing to do the things I love.

I’m learning how to slow down.
Finding my rituals
Moving every day
Getting back on my mat
And trying not to overthink every little thing.

Five years sounds like a long time so I’m navigating this part of the journey one day at a time.

Giving my body and mind time to adjust and find their way home 🩷

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 💕

Three months ago, these were just statistics.

Now, I’m one of them 🩷

1 in 7 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Around 20,000 Australian men and women are diagnosed each year.

And perhaps one of the most interesting things I’ve learned through my own journey is that No family history does not mean no risk.

But there is also so much good news 🫶🏼
5 year survival from breast cancer in Australia has increased from 75% to 93% over the past few decades (AIHW)

And there are more than 284,000 breast cancer survivors living in Australia right now 🤗 (Cancer Australia)

Today, on the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I spent my morning listening to @garvaninstitute annual breast cancer research lecture. It was another reminder of just how much breast cancer research continues to progress and improve outcomes for people diagnosed with this disease ✨

I’m incredibly grateful to be benefiting from that research myself 🙏🏼

And as I move through treatment, recovery and back into movement, I’m becoming more and more interested in what we can do during and after breast cancer treatment to support our long-term health 🙌🏼

My message to you …
~ Learn and do your breast self check
~ Keep up with appropriate screening
 ~ Know your individual risk
~ And don’t assume it couldn’t happen to you

Because it happened to me when I least expected.

Early detection matters. Research matters. And awareness matters 🩷

Stage 2 ~ Radiation Oncology |Mapping CT 💫

Another step forward in my comeback journey …

Today was the first stage in planning for my radiotherapy treatment with a mapping CT ✨

After surgery and the very welcome news that I don’t need chemotherapy, radiotherapy is my next big treatment block, followed by endocrine therapy.

And today, the 21st day of September, also happens to be World Gratitude Day 🥹

Gratitude is something I keep coming back to throughout my breast cancer journey.

I’m grateful it was found early, grateful it’s treatable, grateful for the incredible people and technology involved in my care, and deeply grateful for all the love and support around me 💕

Today was all about precision and planning.

I was carefully positioned and kept completely still while they placed three tiny tattoo dots, mapped everything out, observed my breathing and measured my ribcage expansion.

Then it was time to assess my lung capacity for DIBH 🫁 (Deep Inspiration Breath Hold), the technique I’ll use during treatment to help protect my heart ♥️

All that breathwork practice coming in handy! 🙌🏼

Now my radiation oncology team takes over the planning and prescription …then it’s time for treatment.

And at the end of this chapter …

I get to ring the bell 🔔

Thank you to everyone who continues to check in, pray for me, send messages, love and encouragement. I may not have gotten back to everyone, but I have read every single message and they mean so much 🩷

3 days down south ...

Slowing down, breathing in the ocean air and appreciating just how lucky we are to have places like this on our doorstep.

Good food, good company, plenty of laughs and nowhere we needed to be 🩷

Sometimes a change of scenery is exactly what’s needed.

Feeling very grateful for these few days with my family… and for our beautiful WA coastline 🌊☀️
