POSTS STORIES REELS

I am featured in a new @gestalten book!

The book is called ‘This is Where We Live’ and it’s a compilation of artists and illustrators who have architecture and space at the centre of their practice.

I have long been a fan of their publications so being featured in one now, among so many great artists, is a dream come true.

You will find me in the ‘Architectural Memory: Drawing as Archive and Anecdote’ section.

‘This Is Where We Live’ is out now – you can buy it following the link in my bio.

A huge thank you to everyone who came to the opening of LONDON LIVES! on Wednesday evening at Barbican Library. I hope you had a good time!

It meant so much to me seeing so many friends and familiar faces coming together under the roof of one of my favourite places in London. I wish I’d had more time to thank you personally!

The last few days have been a whirlwind. It was my first time driving a van, and my first time driving into Central London, and at rush hour! No need to say I didn’t sleep very well the night before 🫩

But everything came together wonderfully on the private view night. Now I can’t wait for more people to enjoy the exhibition which will run all month till June 30.

A special mention to the staff @barbicanandcommunitylibraries for their invaluable help and guidance; and to the @londonfestivalofarchitecture for welcoming me to the #LFA2025

And last but not least, the people without whom this would have never happened:

A new entry in my Grim Reaper series has been added to the collection!

My @nunheadcemetery inspired drawing is the 6th based on London’s Magnificent Seven, the large garden cemeteries built around the capital in the Victorian era.

Each of them constitutes a different take on the Angel of Death: the warrior, the crooked, the creeper, the war ravaged...

The floor plan is the visual spark that provides me with a framework for the character and, after that, it’s all down to own experience of the place.

I carefully record the graves and mausoleums that catch my attention during my many visits, then bring them into the artwork to add depth and celebrate the idiosyncratic quality of each cemetery.

For example, this Grim Reaper is holding an upside down torch, one of the classic funerary symbols that is featured prominently in Nunhead Cemetery.

These intricate drawings work both ways, juxtaposing the idea of the character study with the almost literal mapping of place.

All entries in my Magnificent Seven series play as tongue-in-cheek Memento Mori and cartographic parodies at the same time.

I also like to bring in elements related to the moment in time when the artwork was made.

In this case, my visits to Nunhead took place during one of the hottest summers on record in the UK, as well as a year of changes for the cemetery, which is undergoing a lavish renovation.

The original pen and pencil drawing will be displayed for the first time during my Open Studio weekend at @whirledstudio as part @camberwellartsfestival on 5 and 6 December.

Come see it and I will unveil all of its secrets to you.

Next year is: @highgate_cemetery

Happy Halloween!

Inking my Nunhead Cemetery inspired Grim Reaper 🪦🖋️

Translating the pencil sketch to ink is not without its challenges! Fortunately, it’s so detailed that I can consolidate the linework fairly quickly onto the new sheet of paper.

I like using fineliner pens for the outline and deep blacks. Their archive quality ink is indelible and lightfast, and they are very versatile.

Next, I start building up shading, layer upon layer, using pencils of various softnesses. From this point on, things get tricky as I need to be careful not to smudge the whole thing with my own arm.

I really like this stage, I can indulge in my love for B&W, forget myself in the process and concentrate on the podcast of choice @caneandrinse

Detail of the sketch of Nunhead Cemetery, my newest Grim Reaper drawing, just before inking.

This is only the third stage in the long creative process behind these intricate pieces.

I start off by producing several quick thumbnails exploring different poses for the Grim Reaper character.

I like to react to the plan of the cemetery and its relation to the central architectural element in it. In this case, the imposing chapel at the top of the central avenue.

I then go on numerous site visits in search for spots and graves that catch my attention to add depth to the work.

Once I have a clear picture of what I want, that’s when I take to the drawing board.

Using technical drawing tools and a blue pencil I carefully translate all that research –crystallised on a very rough sketchbook drawing– onto an A2 sheet of paper.

To aid me in the process, I look at photos of the various spots in the cemetery I have liked, and when necessary to satellite imagery.

This process is the same for all of my cemetery drawings.

Sketching Nunhead Cemetery 🪦

As is now tradition, every Halloween I bring a new cemetery to life as part of my Magnificent Seven series.

These consist of very detailed pen and pencil drawings inspired by the seven most iconic cemeteries in London.

Each constitute a different take on the Grim Reaper and are made through a laborious creation process.

This stage is about consolidating all the research carried out during my many visits to the cemetery. The sketch you saw at the beginning is the main reference for through the drawing process.

Deigned to help Londoners bury their loved ones at a time of unprecedented urban and social growth the Magnificent Seven remain incredibly popular sites for contemplation and nature conservation.

Stay tuned for the next stage in the process.

A taste of what we’ll be doing at my next collage illustration workshop at @the_london.archives

We will be creating a Grim Reaper inspired by Victorian maps and vintage photos of London cemeteries, all sourced from their incredible collection.

We will also look at my award-nominated drawings of the Magnificent Seven and learn about their secrets.

Finally, we will accessorise our creations with magazine cutouts from fashion, travel and gossip publications!

My Grim Reaper was inspired by the design and architecture of the iconic @nunheadcemetery

Autumn embraced Kensington Market on Phillimore Walk so elegantly in its bronze light on Saturday 🍁

The crowds poured in from the High Street and the market came alive under the magnificent presence of the stunning Kensington Central Library 📚

Thank you to those who came to say hi, some of you from as far away as Stratford or Finchley! A huge thank you also to the people of @openartspaces who were so helpful and welcoming 🦺

Sharing a table with my dear friend @katiehinchliffe and her captivating @hinchiedesigns was a blast. I can’t wait to do it again! 🫒

I was a bit worried about the reception of my mostly South London inspired artworks in western latitudes. There was one hilarious moment when someone said ‘where is Brixton?’ But overall my works were very warmly received!

If you missed the chance, come see me at Chiswick Market on Nov 29th, where Katie and I will be returning! 👯

See you then! 👋

Small Blue Dot has come to a close at the @espaciogallery after an exhilarating week full of exciting conversations and beautiful art.

I am so grateful to @paintingprogress_ and @pckdlnch for putting the show together and bringing the crowds in. Being selected for an exhibition with such an honourable theme with so many talented artists was incredible.

Having all of my cemetery drawings shown together was particularly wonderful. When I set out to draw the Magnificent Seven, one every Halloween, I never thought I would be able to realistically execute my vision.

Five years on and past the equinox of this project, I can’t help but marvel when I look at my cemetery characters standing side by side, each with its own distinct personality.

Two more to go!

I will be waiting expectantly for Painting Progress next project!
