Let’s talk about CECS - also known as #SpikesDisease
Share to help spread awareness!

This genetic condition is under reported because people (inc vets and specialists in our experience) just don’t know the early signs.

Breeders cover up symptoms and breed from sick dogs for money, or issues are hidden because of what and how they feed, so it goes unnoticed.

What to look for 👀

Behaviour:
Being fussy, refusing to eat/take treats, Itching, lip licking, head nodding, excessive stretching/splooting, lethargy, not wanting to do business in the garden, reactive behaviour, noise sensitivity, being off food.

Body: a ‘blue tinge’ to the eye/goopy eyes, slightly closed / sunken eyes (anything except a bright sparking eye really), sitting and not moving suddenly, ear infections, yeast build up, Being sick - white foam, yellow bile, grassy sick, early morning hiccups, abdominal cramps, suddenly looking at paws/hind legs and nibbing hind legs / tail.

Pooping habits: sometimes super runny poops, sometimes blood streaked poops, mucusy or ‘skinned’ poops, yellow poops, slimy poops.

Eventual wobble episodes like being drunk, but remaining fully conscious. Sometimes unable to walk/control limbs.
This symptom is a Paroxysmal dyskinesia (PD), a group of movement disorders, characterised by episodes of abnormal, involuntary movements of the limbs or trunk.

Some dogs have some symptoms, some dogs have all symptoms not all symptoms occur all the time.

If you recognise any symptoms, let us know.

It’s very identifiable and manageable without medication.
Cytopoint and apoquel are not needed and only mask symptoms which leads to more issues down the line, like Gallbladder Mucocele.

Thanks for being here and learning, and for advocating for pets and this breed.
Other breeds are also affected, from other terriers, to papillons to labradors.

If you found this helpful or informative please comment and let me know and share to help more people know the early signs.

Hi thanks for following me. Just dropping this in here so you can know a bit about me. I used to suffer so badly from normal puppy food, treats. I got a few ear infections, a uti, unexplained bleeding and was poorly and not myself a lot of the time. My tummy would gurgle badly every few weeks and I’d get bloody poop about once a month, if not more often. The vets and specialists couldn’t get to the bottom of it and just used to treat the symptoms and give them names.

I lived on antibiotics, appetite stimulants and anti inflammatories for months at a time.

I had prostate washes and body exams. I was always at the vets if you remember. I was still chirpy most of the time and would eventually eat but was #FussyGussy none the less.

5that was when Mamma looked into allergies and finally got a blood allergy test done. It told us what I was allergic to and what to avoid.

That’s when my tummy stopped gurgling and I started to feel better. My poorly eyes cleared up and my nose got wet again. My poop was better most of the time - but not all the time.

Then I went on a food restriction diet to confirm / deny any results. Mamma managed to fully manage my condition by managing my food. Mamma also got me a nutritionist and spoke to other qualified nutritionists like @sportdognutrition to make sure I was getting a better diet.
I tried different raws and eventually found @ziwipetsuk and with the Four Leaf Rover Protect ‘Magic Dust’ soil based pro biotic and @feelwells_healthy_dog_treats post biotics, my tum finally stopped gurgling and my poops were better and my eyes and ears and itching cleared right up.

It turns out that these are all symptoms of early CECS - a genetic condition. So if you suffer with any of these, please feel free to DM and we’re happy to signpost you to the best help we know.

Food can be medicine or illness in us and in humans.
We didn’t know it was my ‘grain free, hypoallergenic’ foods making me so poorly all the time.
Mamma had to push the vet for a blood allergy test which eventually gave us a list of all the things I couldn’t and could have.
Then it was a food trial test and learning of how I reacted to what foods on the ‘maybe’ list.
At least we knew to stay away from peas, soya, maize, cornstarch (grain derived) rice and chicken.
That was just the beginning of the journey to finding out I have #CanineEpileptoidCrampingSyndrome - that we only worked out early this year at the grand old age of 3.
A year of really suffering and being a poorly puppy. 6 months of specialist visits. No change, bleeding from my little boy bits, UTIs, slimy poops, constant ear infections, itchy paws and tail. Jumping about from the cramps.
Blood tests and then BOOM, it all fell into place from there.
It’s been a long journey, and we haven’t always posted about this side, but now the vets know about the new research and the symptoms.
It’s not epilepsy, it’s internal cramps and all the inflammation and issues that comes with it.
Mine has been mostly digestive and food is a trigger for me. I’m incredibly sensitive.
Thank you for your support on our journey to knowledge.

Join me mantrailing with @delightfuldogstraining

Honestly, the more I do it, the better we get. The better we get, the more we enjoy it!

This is a safe, structured way to use our noses.
I love visiting new places and going to new environments.

Sometimes I switch teams so I find new people!

I now understand the assignment 🤓

We go one at a time so it’s also great for sensitive and ‘reactive’ dogs too!

My next turn is in a few weeks. Until then, hoopers, tug and find it games, physio to keep me strong, stable and balanced, and lots of snuggles.

It’s been a week! I’ve been pooping pretty good this week. My ears have gone down, Mamma’s stabilised my food, treats and supplements and we’ve had some really nice calm walks.

I did some top Hooping and I can’t wait for next week’s session again. I wonder what I’ll learn next time!

As ever, @boilandbroth treats have been keeping me going safe and well. And we’ve updated our 20% discount code to GlutenPro - so use that on all products all of the time.

If you’d like to know more about food and feeding border terriers, just DM and we’d love to help you out.

Find out more over at @canineglutensensitivitypro’s website. I’m all over it 😂

Hoopers!
This was my fifth time going. And I’ve got some great wins.
I happily run now.
We’ve learnt some helpful cues like around the barrel. Each direction has its own cue.
My sit and stay is pretty good too.
And I love seeing my furiends!

Mamma takes my safe treats and super water and it helps me feel good and learn better.

My life skills training comes in super helpful too. And it gives us a great opportunity to practice.

Do you play Hoooers yet? Let me know in the comments.

The amazing Dr Carol Hughes from @biome4petsuk talking about biome diversity, soil eating and the war on microbes over the last 100 yrs.

Now is a great time to diversify the biome.
All the leaves are falling 🍂
The microbial activity is ramping up.
Snuffling in woodland can be really beneficial.

Dogs are amazing. If they eat soil, it’s because they can smell the microbes in there that they need.

If your dog is a soil eater, it may be a good time to have a chat and see how we can support them, and whether a biome test would be beneficial.

Get in touch to find out more.

Have you been to @ntstourhead?
I saw so many other dogs and lived all the sniffs.

The trees were amazing and we had a fab time.

Is it on your list of doggy friendly places to visit?
