'Beverly Buchanan: Ruination and Regeneration'

Known for her “shack” sculptures and land installations across her native Georgia, Buchanan embraces Southern vernacular architecture as emblematic of Black American history.

A few odd birds, some fat cats, and a father–daughter duo with pens at the ready 🖋️

My dad, Peter Wortsman, and I will be signing Odd Birds & Fat Cats at the Brooklyn Book Festival next Sunday, September 27, at noon. Come say hello and take a little urban wildlife home!

First baby out in the world. 💙📚

An advance copy of Beverly Buchanan: Ruination and Regeneration has arrived. After four years of research, writing, editing, and collaboration, it’s so rewarding to finally see it in print.

Looking forward to sharing it with the world this fall. by @aureliebw

Before I was born, my father wrote a text addressed to me. Years later, I illustrated it for our book Odd Birds & Fat Cats.

Reading it now from the other side of the ultrasound screen, I find myself returning to the final lines:

“And you, a reluctant neuter squiggle on a screen, a black hole, a big bang in the making…”

A special arrival.

My essay, “Ruination and Regeneration: Beverly Buchanan and the Quiet Language of the Shrine,” appears in the Venice Biennale special issue of Stayinart (pictured here in German translation).

The essay forms part of a larger body of research on Buchanan that will culminate this fall in Beverly Buchanan: Ruination and Regeneration (DelMonico Books / D.A.P.). by @aureliebw
