To explain Alaska to an outsider felt insurmountable, the vastness of the state akin to another world, like trying to describe a trip to Mars to someone who had never seen a satellite image of space. Coincidentally, it’s much like how I felt leaving Alaska for the first time—an endangered species outside of its native habitat, survival tenuous and comfort denounced.

The expansiveness of Alaska still feels directly proportionate to the expansiveness within myself. To stand at the base of a mountain towering above me with her uncompromising layers and ruthless wildlife, her neutrality at my survival electrifies my being. My brain takes up miles of space; my body replicates her strength. When I’m not home, I feel a little more shrunk, a little more deflated, too inflated with material convenience and frictionlessness against the wild.

I’ve been spoiled by the generosity and cruelty of Mother Nature after a youth growing up at home. I’ve wondered at her plentiful fireweeds, our sign of summer emerging in May after a long, nine-month winter. I’ve felt the air whirling around me atop a mountain while listening to the deepest silence I could ever imagine, gazing at a valley that stretched into eternity.

My home has long been a sense of pride and shame. In my youth, Alaskan pride shone through my soul like the noon sun bouncing off a glass shard, a clear spotlight on my identity. People in Alaska are very proud of being from Alaska, seeing themselves as a part of the power of Mother Nature rather than a human in opposition to it. They gloatingly embrace a frigid wind with no accouterments, boasting an inhumane ambivalence. I, too, take overwhelming pride in my tolerance of chill, struggling against my body’s natural acclimation to the lesser evils of New York City winters. My home lives in extremities—perhaps why I’m prone to extremities.

A 2025 that was largely spent offline, with some moments I wanted to share online. Here’s some memories, near or far, that I adore 📸

4. me, age 4, a photo I found as perfect proof of a magical Alaskan childhood.
