Work is now underway on 'Rhythm of The Reeds - Welcome to Country', a major tapestry created in collaboration with Maree Clarke (Yorta Yorta/Wamba Wamba/Mutti Mutti/Boonwurrung) for the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM)'s new $110 million redeveloped home at South Melbourne Town Hall. The commission also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Australian Tapestry Workshop.

Over the past few months, our team has been working closely with Maree to guide the translation of her artwork into tapestry. Measuring 7 x 3 metres, the work will take eight months to complete, with a team of eight weavers, dyeing specialists and support staff bringing it to life using 250 specially dyed colours of Victorian wool.

Pictured: the tapestry in progress, artist visits, creation of the cartoon, colour selection + yarn dyeing, and river reeds gathered by Maree that have informed the work.

This project is made possible thanks to the generous support of Peter Jopling AM KC @peterjopling

As the @nationalgalleryaus opens Arthur Boyd: Tapestries this weekend, we're celebrating our own collaboration with Boyd, across a series of tapestries that helped shape the history of Australian tapestry. Among them is the Great Hall Tapestry in Parliament House, Canberra, our most significant work to date.

Measuring 9 metres high and 20 metres wide, and believed to be the second-largest tapestry in the world at the time, it remains a landmark achievement in Australian art and one of the most ambitious tapestry projects of the modern era.

At the heart of its success was trust. Boyd saw the weavers as artists in their own right, placing complete confidence in their ability to translate his vision into tapestry. When he first saw the completed work laid out in full, he knelt and kissed it.

Today, the Great Hall Tapestry continues to stand as a powerful reminder of what can happen when artists and weavers collaborate with shared ambition, creative courage and mutual respect.

That spirit continues to guide us today as we work with leading contemporary artists, pushing the boundaries of tapestry to create powerful new works that tell Australian stories.

Sunlight, cyanotype, photography and weaving converge in Izabela Pluta’s 𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘹, a hand-woven tapestry created in collaboration with the Australian Tapestry Workshop.

The work draws on a coronal synoptic map from May 1986, a scientific image recording solar activity across a complete rotation of the Sun. Cotton yarn coated in cyanotype chemistry was then exposed at Newcastle’s former World Map Pool, now known as the Canoe Pool, allowing the sunlight, UV intensity and environmental conditions of that day to materially shape its colour.
At the heart of the work is a personal date: 11 May 1986, the day Izabela Pluta emigrated from Poland to Australia with her family. Forty years later, Refraction index brings together movement across time and place with light, chemistry, image and thread.

Hand-woven by Saffron Gordon at the Australian Tapestry Workshop. Commissioned by The Lock-Up Patrons Program. Copper elements produced with assistance from studio assistant Leeroy Chapman.
Drop in this week to see 𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘹 and the rest of @izabelapluta__studio exhibition 𝘊𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 - Presented at The Lock-Up from 25 September 2026 to 31 January 2027.

TAPESTRY ANNOUNCEMENT | Anne Zahalka

One of Australia’s most highly regarded photo-media artists, Anne Zahalka, is collaborating with ATW to realise her first-ever tapestry, ‘Detail (from ‘The Dutch Painter’)’, 1991. The tapestry will be handwoven by ATW weaver Tim Gresham over four months.

The project brings Zahalka’s ongoing exploration of photographic reproduction and digital image-making into dialogue with tapestry, where the pixelated logic of the photograph is reconfigured through thread, colour and the physical structure of the weave. The collaboration opens up new material and visual possibilities for Zahalka’s work through the medium of tapestry.

We can’t wait to share more of this tapestry as it progresses. Swipe through to see ATW weaver Tim Gresham translating the artwork into tapestry, including an early exploratory sample.

We’re weaving this monumental tapestry bit by bit, the finished work will be a huge 7 x 3 metres!

As we progress, we roll the tapestry down, adjust the loom tension and transfer the next section of the cartoon onto the warp threads with ink. Then, it’s time to weave again. 🧵
Want to see this spectacular work in progress up close?

Join us tomorrow at 11am for a FREE guided tour of ATW, including special access to the workshop floor.
