Growing up as a lil gay boy in the 1990s South, with hair this red and wrists naturally limp, came with challenges. Ones that made me dim my star. The beautiful, bright star that was beaming from me since birth. Shadow it. Cover it with a mask that was constructed by other’s hate. Bullied. “F*g”. Gum thrown in my hair. Drinks poured on me. Made my voice deeper. Tricking girls to date me. Praying to a God that other’s told me will send me to hell. “Experimenting”. Hooking up with boys; my mind convincing myself it wasn’t that good yet my body craving more. These challenges caused delayed emotional development.

I came out when I was 19. My out-story came with acceptance; my loved ones questioned “why didn’t you tell us sooner” and “well you did play with Barbies”. The signs were there, but I knew from a very young age that society did not like the signs. No gay people on TV except as comic reliefs. Hush hush. Don’t ask don’t tell. Could you imagine, at such a young age, to feel that something so deeply innate within you is considered wrong by society? Wrong by a book that everyone worships without question? If everyone knew, I would be outcasted. No friends. Family disappointed.

Regardless of all of this, I still always knew…even from a young age even with all these emotional distresses and confusion…that I have a bright star in me. I knew there was going to be a day that I told everyone: “I love boys, and I love kissing them”. Being gay isn’t the only reason my star exists, but it does shine extra bright in hopes to show others that being gay is awesome. It’s a gift. I love to be able to hug the inner child of myself and tell him “we did it…everyone knows that we kiss boys and they actually love you for it!”. Pride for me isn’t just about partying or showing off the rights that the gays in the previous decades paved for me (thank you, always)—it’s about becoming the person that little Tyler wish he saw when he was a lil kid in the south, seeking a potential glimpse into my own future. A thriving, happy, fully expressed gay man. Not a comic relief. Someone who’s star is shining bright, no a single shadow in sight. Happy Pride. 🏳️‍🌈 by @authorizetyler
