A year ago, I was sitting behind my computer writing The Painted Frog and learning the incredible story of Peter “the Pirate” Carolan. Today, I’m standing on Catalina Island watching that story continue.

I wrote the book. I helped create the 3-Day Equine Navy SEAL Retreat for Patriot SEAL Heritage Foundation and now we have built therapeutic retreats for Navy SEALS with our friends at @catalinahorseback to bring that mission to life here on the island.

Yesterday I even got to merchandise their store with Pete’s artwork, his story and The Painted Frog—and now the book is officially being sold right here on Catalina!! Giddy Up!! Sometimes you don’t realize where a story is taking you while you’re writing it.

This one brought me all the way to Catalina, CA, and we’re just getting started. 🇺🇸🐴🏴‍☠️ taken in Catalina Island, CA by @authorlisaray

More than 30 years of friendship means we’ve walked through almost every season of life together—the beautiful ones and the hard ones.

There’s something incredibly special about women who have known your story for decades and still stand beside you, loving you through every chapter. ❤️ cheers @sashon73
Happy Birthday and wishing you love , joy, and fun in your NC chapter. We All Love and Miss you xoxo #HMB by @authorlisaray

All last year I interviewed the people who knew and loved Peter J. Carolan so I could write and publish The Painted Frog. Pete had already passed away, so I never had the chance to meet the man whose story I was being trusted to tell.

Yesterday, during the Los Caballeros ride on Catalina Island, my friend and PSHF strategic partner Jeff Skelton brought me to El Rancho Escondido, the historic private Wrigley family ranch. It was a rare opportunity to be in a place not normally open to the public, surrounded by generations of riders—and people who actually knew Pete.

Pete was a Los Caballero. And there I was, standing in front of his friends and fellow riders, talking about his life and The Painted Frog. That was pretty impactful for me to be in a space with a horseless rider ceremony and generations of men whose brotherhood is so strong.

Maybe growing up in Newport, Rhode Island, is part of why Catalina has gotten under my skin the way it has. I understand the connection between an island, its history, and the people who carry its stories from one generation to the next.

After I finished writing the book the foundation Patriot SEAL Heritage Foundation hired me on as their Media Director and we are carrying that legacy forward with our three-day Catalina equine retreat for Navy SEALs struggling with PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and related challenges, followed by continued therapeutic equine support on the mainland with SOCOM & JAG.

My friend and PSHF board member JD Bennett, Jeff, and so many others here believe in the same thing I do: when good people stand together, we can make a difference.

I never got to meet Pete. But I was trusted to tell his story. And now, in a way I never could have imagined when I started writing his book, I get to help carry his legacy forward by serving the brotherhood he loved.
That fills me up more than I can ever say. ❤️ Giddy Up! taken in Catalina Island, CA by @authorlisaray

In flight to Catalina Island right now, and feeling a little emotional about this one.

The last few months have reminded me just how quickly life can change. Maybe that’s why the work I’ve been doing around people’s stories and legacies has started to mean so much more to me personally.

This week, Pete Carolan’s artwork will be honored at the 67th Annual Catalina Festival of Art in a new Legacy Artist category I created for him as the Media Director for Patriot SEAL Heritage Foundation

I started out helping tell Pete’s story. Somewhere along the way, during this last year of interviews and writing, his story became part of mine too.

Feeling grateful, proud, and very aware of how important it is to tell people’s stories while we can—and to keep telling them when they’re gone.

Catalina bound❤️ Fundraising for 3 Day Equine Retreats for Navy SEALS struggling with PTSD | TBI with wrap around via SOCOM and JAG 🇺🇸❤️for our active SEALS.

Most of you have known me for years, so you know this one is personal.

My mom Rosemary Moy married Terry “Mother” Moy many years ago, and somehow I finally convinced him to let me tell his story. I never expected interviewing then writing MOY BELL: The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday to change me as much as it did.

Through Terry, and the incredible special forces and Navy SEAL Legacy Voices who came back to help tell his story, I learned what brotherhood, loyalty and preserving history really mean.

And now Terry’s children Colleen Byrne, Chris J. Moy, Eddie Moy, Steve and Terry Jr., have created and dedicated a replica of the MOY BELL that hangs inside the Navy SEAL Museum alongside his book, on permanent display Navy SEAL Museum San Diego

That’s my mom’s husband. That’s their dad. But “Mother Moy” belongs to generations of Navy SEALs.

He helped train men as a BUDS Instructor who fought 5 tours in Vietnam himself. He trained and shaped men who went on to extraordinary lives of service—from historic Apollo capsule recoveries to leadership within the FBI and so much more.

Listening to those men come back decades later and tell me what Terry meant to them changed something in me, too.

I started out simply wanting to tell Terry’s story well. Somewhere along the way, I found a deeper purpose in my own work. I understood why these stories need to be preserved, why the voices behind them matter, and how much history can disappear if someone doesn’t take the time to listen.

Terry’s story helped shape the writer—and the person—I am today.

So seeing his Naval brass ship bell and his book preserved inside the Navy SEAL Museum isn’t really a publishing moment for me. It’s a family moment, a full-circle moment, and one I’m incredibly proud to share.

Love you, MOY BELL ; Terry “Mother” Moy. I’m so glad you finally let me tell your story. 🇺🇸

Maybe that’s the beautiful thing about legacy: while you’re preserving someone else’s, they can quietly change yours. taken in Navy SEAL Museum San Diego by @authorlisaray

I’m honored to be working with Patriot SEAL Heritage Foundation who highlights, PTSD, TBI, and related conditions for our NAVY SEAL, veterans, and first responders🇺🇸

Thank you to the entire board for the opportunity to work with you to highlight equine and canine therapeutic initiatives in the name of Peter J. Carolan 🇺🇸🐸🔱

I was commissioned by the foundation one year ago, ghostwriting and interviewing for The Painted Frog book publishing.

The board has now asked me to stay on to curate the national art for our museums and to connect with nonprofit and for-profit to move initiatives forward for the foundation mission🇺🇸

Hooyah to our SEAL teams and those active and non active military. Thank you for your service to our country🇺🇸 by @authorlisaray

Happy Birthday, babe. ❤️

To my favorite guy—three and a half years later, I’m still so grateful for every adventure and every quiet day we get to spend together.

This past year has been a reminder that good health, time, and the people we love are life’s greatest gifts. Watching you back out on the water, doing what you love, is something I’ll never take for granted.

Here’s to celebrating you today and to many more birthdays, beach days, and new adventures together. Happy Birthday David Donovan ❤️ by @authorlisaray
