Ava Koohbor is a sound artist and poet. She turns found junk - broken chairs, metal, stone, into instruments. Her performances hum between noise and spell, memory and rupture.

This video: KOKORI (excerpt). Players : Ava Koohbor + Leyya Mona Tawil.

"This backgammon was made by my dad(Houshang Koohbor) during Iran-Iraq war. We used to play it under candlelight under attack. After his passing I brought it from Iran.

Two of the artists I’m influenced by are John Cage and Marcel Duchamp. MD in his later stages of life dedicated his life to playing chess. He and John Cage played chess by an electroacoustic chess board made by Lowell Cross.

I decided to make this backgammon into electroacoustic backgammon board reclaiming the history of makers from white men to Middle Eastern women. Turning my heritage to Avant-garde sound.

Thanks to San Francisco Art Commission Individual Artist Grant, I was able to realize this project in the outside world. Onwards with peace! For a world without war and destruction!"-artist statement

Ava Koohbor performs at Temescal Art Center located at 511 48th Street in Oakland Ca on Sunday September 28th 7PM at a benefit for Temescal Art Center - Fire Museum Presents returns to the Bay Area leading up to our 25th anniversary!

Also performing are Trio del Mango ( Alexandra Buschman-Román: Voice, Percussion, Jason Stamberger: Guitar, Keys, Bass, Shahi Baaja, Electronics, Percussion & Jake Rodriguez: Cello, Synth, Drum Machines, Percussion) & Blevin Blectum. More info at the link in bio.

Excited to be performing alongside Ava Koohbor @avakoohbor and Ven Voisey @venvoisey for the site-specific sound performance event, Room/Tone, at 500 Capp Street | The David Ireland House @500cappstreet on Sunday, October 4. This performance is presented in conjunction with Andy Vogt’s @andy_vogt_studio current exhibition, The Ringing in My Eyes.

Working with Andy on this is a full-circle moment for me, as part of the inspiration for this event traces back to Sustained Decay, a site-specific sculptural, sound, and light installation we created together in the partially deconstructed back room of Adobe Books when it was still on 16th St back in 2009.

Please note that this event will begin promptly at 6 PM and there will not be individual delineated sets; instead, each artist will be performing throughout the entire duration of the event across the expanse of the house, often simultaneously, so please don't be late!

Room/Tone: A live sound performance

Hope : my new instrument

Hope is not a fixed state, but a continuous movement, something that keeps remaking itself.

The daf is an instrument rooted in tradition and memory.

The fan is an everyday, industrial object.

The handmade oscillators bring sound out of electronic circuits.

Three entirely different worlds are placed alongside one another, yet instead of canceling each other out, they form a single system. The very act of bringing them together becomes a form of hope.

Ava Koohbar : sound enactor, handmade instruments, ‘making unfolds through process, handmade instruments and performances. Performance not as a product, but a as a way of life.’ - excerpt from a description of her new book, Of Flesh and Frequency, a Poetics of Sound Making. @avakoohbor

@jordanblankenship

K Francis Messer is a bay area-based percussionist and electro-acoustic noisemaker. performances emphasize suspension and consequence with analog feedback, prepared drums, salvaged objects, and sonic interference. sounds move in fractures and flares, embracing points of collision.
@chlorinearoma

Kaitlin McSweeney is a performer and composer based in Oakland, Ca. She improvises with live-looped vocals, cello, feedback, signal and environmental noise. Her recent work explores eroticism in noise through a body-centered invitation of tension and release, tearing apart and bringing together.

All day fun at the Kanazawa Soundscape Festival yesterday. Fascinating line up of a wonderful mixture of Japanese and western artists working in all things sound. Also included in the pics: new friends, a floral art installation pop-up next door, and my Shinkansen pound cake. Known as a mini-Kyoto but deserving of its own rep, today I’m off to explore the city which features a castle district, vast seafood markets and a refined cultural arts scene. taken in Kanazawa, Ishikawa by @avakoohbor
