May recap part 1

Welsh Champs 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Ellis Bushell u93 9/9
245 (+17.5) / 142.5 (+2.5) / 297.5 (+17.5) - 685 (+40)
The day of all time for Ellis. We adjusted the peak strategy for this one and it paid off. Won the u93 juniors and bagged best junior male.

Katie Irvine u69 8/9
135 (-5) / 70 (+2.5) / 177.5 (-7.5) - 382.5 (-10)
Another great step in the right direction for Katie, on her way back to full strength amongst a hectic schedule. Won the u69 juniors and bagged second best junior female.

Josh Wall u93 8/9
230 (-2.5) / 172.5 (+5) / 245 (+5) - 647.5 (+7.5)
Good day out for Josh, hitting a nice full power bench PR and a lovely third dead. Also, a bronze medal (again) in the u93 juniors.

Samer Makhlooq u93 7/9
260 (+7.5) / 152.5 (+5) / 272.5 (+10) - 685 (+22.5)
Strong day out for Samer, a technical hiccup on bench derailed top end a little but still pulled through with a comp PR. Second in the u93 juniors on body weight, and second best junior male.

Leighon Otteson u83 7/9
250 (+20) / 137.5 (-2.5) / 230 (+2.5) - 617.5 (+20)
After some rocky externals in prep it was great to see Leighon on the platform. Took a stab at a third dead for the win in the u83 juniors which was a little too much, expect a lot more at the next one.

JC Pesario u93 8/9
217.5 (+7.5) / 127.5 (-5) / 235 (=) - 580 (+2.5)
Amazing squats from JC, a pec issue in prep threw off our prep but strength showed up way better than expected, deadlifts have been slow to get moving but with a new plan I expect them to show up.

Oliver Neill u93 6/9
212.5 (=) / 152.5 (+5) / 230 (-10) - 595 (-5)
Prep was incredibly productive and Oliver looked on for comp, but food poisoning the week of comp said no.

Oliver Jones-Nerzic u83 7/9
187.5 (-12.5) / 137.5 (-2.5) / 235 (+2.5) - 560 (-7.5)
Good day out for Oli, despite averaging a comp every 2 months for the past 6 months. Now for time away from competing, and perhaps back up to the u93s. by @avalanchepowerlifting

April Recap

Welsh Varsity🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🟢🔴

Rauf Allen u105 8/9
250 (+15) / 150 (+5) / 260 (+10) - 660 (+30)
Good day out for Rauf adding 30kg to the total after only competing in February. Now for some time away from competing to build.

Jacob White fake u105 6/9
217.5 (-2.5) / 115 (+2.5) / 232.5 (-12.5) - 565 (-12.5)
Thirds proving to be a bit tricky for Jacob on this day, we know strength is there for more at the next.

Matilda Pike u69 7/9
110 (+7.5) / 47.5 (+2.5) / 122.5 (+5) - 280 (+15)
Another quick turnaround but still managing to PR everything, now to survive one million holidays over summer.

Ellis James fake u93 7/9
175 (+12.5) / 112.5 (+2.5) / 195 (+5) - 482.5 (+20)
Some big PRs for Ellis. Now we work to ensure standards are undeniable for the next comp.

BUCs🇬🇧

Ffion Grant u57 7/9
107.5 (-2.5) / 60 (=) / 110 (-5) - 277.5 (-5)
After a less than ideal prep it was good to see numbers close to all time bests, especially after an unfortunate call for hitching on third dead.

Jack Taylor u66 6/9
170 (+5) / 117.5 (-2.5) / 180 (+2.5) - 467.5 (+5)
Comfortable total PR for Jack, refinements will be made so training strength shows up on comp day. by @avalanchepowerlifting

February recap part 2

British Bench 🇬🇧
Josh Wall u105 2/3 🥉
175 (+7.5)
Josh made the decision to compete as an u105 compared to the usual u93 for this one. Bench strength was absolutely there but some depth calls (and a failed opener for depth) meant a slightly more conservative than planned third. Got the job done for podium, now we push the bench further for welsh champs.

Luxembourg Open 🇱🇺🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
Orestis Papoulis Xystrakis u74 9/9 🥇
255 (+27.5) / 157.5 (+5) / 260 (+17.5)- 672.5 (+50)
A another clinical day for Orestis going 9/9. Bagged himself the gold in the u74s and 2nd best overall male lifter. Plenty of body weight to add now as we look towards juniors.

Ashling Keeble u76 8/9
145 (+10) / 85 (-2.5) / 160 (-2.5)- 390 (+5)
A nice total PR for Ash, unfortunate call for soft elbows on her third bench of 90 but she'll be back for it and more at her next comp.

Joe Williams u93 8/9
240 (+10) / 142.5 (+7.5) / 227.5 (-17.5) - 610 (=)
A hamstring problem in prep derailed deadlifts a bit but squats and bench showed up as expected. Joe has assured me he will pull 27X at his next comp.

Will Greaves u105 6/9 🥉
272.5 (-30) / 190 (-2.5) / 287.5 (-17.5) - 750 (-50)
Depth proved to be a bit of an issue on squats and left us some way off where strength truly lies. Bench moved well, but coming off second best in a grip battle against the maniak bar lost a few kilos on third deadlift.

As always thank you to the volunteers who help run these comps! by @avalanchepowerlifting

February recap part 1

BCE Varsity 🔴🔵🟢
Rauf Allen u105 9/9
235 (+17.5) / 145 (+5) / 250 (+10) - 630 (+32.5)
Fairly quick turn around from Welsh Unis but a more successful outing for Rauf in his second comp. Bagging the BUCs QT and some huge PRs.

Larissa Cheung u57 9/9
107.5 (+2.5) / 65 (+5) / 130 (+12.5) - 302.5 (+20)
Great day out for Rissa in her 'comeback' comp. Set out to hit the juniors QT and secured by second deadlift.

Matilda Pike u69 7/9
102.5 / 45 / 117.5 - 265
First comp for Matilda after transitioning from Olympic lifting. Fun day out and now we build for the next one!

The Phil Richard Classic🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
Max Roberts Hunt 8/9
212.5 (=) / 130 (+2.5) / 225 (+12.5) - 567.5 (+15)
Good day out for Max after a less than ideal prep. Some kilos in the tank on squat and a slight technical error on bench means we can push even more at the next.

Archie Medway u105 7/9
242.5 (+7.5) / 145 (-2.5) / 255 (-5) - 642.5 (=)
Aim of the day was to enjoy it and have fun. Pushed for milestone numbers on third squat and deadlift which were a little much but a great day nonetheless.

Kayla Barrett u69 7/9
97.5 (+7.5) / 62.5 (+2.5) / 120 (+5) - 280 (+15)
Kayla managed to fit in a comp in between going out 4x a week. A depth issue on third squat prevented 100 being ticked off in comp, but still some nice comp PRs across all 3 lifts.

Katie Irvine u69 8/9
132.5 (-7.5) / 67.5 (=) / 175 (-10) - 375 (-17.5)
Very much a come back comp for Katie. Aim was to go in, enjoy it, and don't break the back, which was successful. After a rough few months of back issues we can push on again now.

Oliver Jones Nerzic u83 5/9
190 (-10) / 140 (=) / 222.5 (-10) - 552.5 (-15)
A frustrating day for Oli where the back to back preps just caught up with him. Adjustments have been made and I have full faith in him balling out at the next.

As always thank you to all the volunteers who make these comps happen! by @avalanchepowerlifting

December recap part 2 🎅🏼🌲

Open British Nationals 🇬🇧

Will Greaves u105 9/9
302.5 (+7.5) / 192.5 (+10) / 305 (+15) - 800 (+32.5)
Incredibly proud of Will for his performance at British. Clinical lifting and did what needed to be done. Agonisingly close to that 100GL with 99.80GL. Especially proud of the work we've put on bench over the past few months to get it going.

Becky Clarke u57 9/9
142.5 (+2.5) / 77.5 (+2.5) / 185 (=)- 405 (+5)
Quick turnaround with home nations only being 5 weeks before, yet still a total PR on another great day for Bec's. Now some time pushing accessories as we look to push into 2026.

West Midlands Winter Championship ❄️

Lily Smalley u76 8/9
152.5 (=) / 77.5 (+2.5) / 160 (+7.5) - 390 (+12.5)
Fantastic day for Lily where we put together a nice total PR in only a couple of blocks. Kilos left in the tank on the day too, now we have plenty of time until juniors to build into something huge.

As always, thank you to all of the volunteers for making these comps happen🙏🏼 by @avalanchepowerlifting

December recap part 1 🎅🏼🌲

Welsh university championships🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Josh Wall u93 8/9
232.5 (+12.5) / 167.5 (+17.5) / 240 (+17.5) - 640 (+52.5)
Josh came into this with a great run of training, and it showed with his performance. Narrowly missed 172.5 third bench, but bagged 3rd best male overall.

Emily Trowbridge u57 8/9
107.5 / 67.5 / 125 - 300
A much better outing at this comp than the last one for Em. Bagged herself the juniors QT and third best female overall.

Jack Taylor u66 9/9
165 / 120 / 177.5 - 462.5
Debut in the u66s for Jack, having lost close to 10kg since he last competed. Aim was to hit the BUCs QT, which he did with kilos in the tank.

Ffion Grant u57 7/9
110 (+7.5) / 60 (+2.5) / 112.5 (-2.5) - 282.5 (+7.5)
Aim of this day was to get Ffion the juniors QT. A third bench miss meant pulling a little more than planned, which she gave a good go. Unfortunately a little too much, but I have no doubt she'll come back for it and more!

Samer Makhlooq u93 7/9
252.5 (+20) / 147.5 (+12.5) / 262.5 (+12.5) - 662.5 (+45)
Huge PRs for Samer on his way to picking up best male lifter. Now we just build up confidence for welsh champs and enjoy his new haircut.

Oliver Jones Nerzic u83 8/9
200 (+10) / 140 (+7.5) / 227.5 (-5) - 567.5 (+15)
The goal for this was to bag the u83s BUCs QT, despite oli's last 2 comps being as a 93. Top end strength showed up amazingly, but unfortunately just missed the final deadlift at lockout. We'll be back for that QT in the new year!

Jacob White u93 9/9
220 / 112.5 / 245 - 577.5
Jacob's first comp (aside from an internal mock meet a year ago) and what a day. Clinical lifting and each lift was on the money. Couldn't have asked for more from him. Also picked up best novice lifter.

Ellis James u83 7/9
162.5 (+7.5) / 110 (+10) / 190 (+10 - 462.5 (+27.5)
Some nice PRs for Ellis. A miss on his third squat for depth was countered with a very smooth third bench attempt. Final deadlift ultimately a little too much to catch his op in the beginner off.

Thank you to all the volunteers for a fantastic comp! by @avalanchepowerlifting

November recaps 🎇 🌟

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿Home Nations 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Becky Clarke u57 9/9
140 (+5) / 75 (+5) / 185 (+4.5) - 400 (+14.5)
Becky's first 9/9 and what an event to do it at! Managing to PR on all 3 lifts, extend her welsh deadlift record, and break the total record. All whilst representing Wales at this year's Home Nations! We go again in a few weeks time at British🤝🏼

I also had the privilege of coaching for Team Wales, a fantastic opportunity which saw Wales place 2nd overall and score the highest team GL in its history. Great to see the sport developing further in the country.

As always thank you to the volunteers, without whom we'd have no comps.

October recaps 🎃🍂

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿Welsh Powerlifting Dragon's Harvest🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Ellis Bushell u93 6/9
227.5 (+2.5) / 137.5 (-2.5) / 280 (=) - 645 (=)
Debut in the 93s for Ellis weighing a whopping 85kg. Top end strength didn't quite express itself compared to training but some adjustments and he'll total what we know he's capable of.

Orestis Papoulis Xystrakis u74 9/9
227.5 / 152.5 / 242.5 - 622.5
First comp for Orestis and what a day! Broke the welsh squat, bench and total record in the junior u74s and went 9/9. Couldn't have asked for more.

Oliver Neill u93 9/9
212.5 (+10) / 147.5 (+5) / 240 (+7.5) - 600 (+22.5)
Clinical Oli continues his great run. Hasn't missed a lift in comp during 2025 and added 57.5kg to his total. A testament to his execution.

Leighon Otteson u83 6/9
230 (+27.5) / 140 (+5) / 227.5 (+7.5) - 597.5 (+40)
An unfortunate call on third squat left us chasing the extra kilos for juniors QT. A day not representative of how productive training has been, I have full faith in Leighon balling out at the next one.

Joe Williams u93 8/9
230 (+30) / 135 (+17.5) / 245 (+37.5) - 610 (+85)
A fantastic day for Joe. Couldn't have asked for much more. A narrow miss with a 140 bench (which he'll be back for), and 6 more kilos to gain in this weight class. Next one will be even bigger!

JC Pesario u93 7/9
210 (+22.5) / 132.5 (+2.5) / 235 (=) - 577.5 (+25)
Squats came in strong to this, unfortunately after a brilliant run of bench in training some bicep tendonitis derailed our top end for bench. With some more consistent blocks and JCs work ethic I believe the next one will be huge.

As always thank you to the volunteers @welsh_powerlifting for another great comp! by @avalanchepowerlifting
