Shashi’s Hot Take: how to pair wine with Indian food.

Indian food is complex, so choose a wine with complexity to match. You need three things:

Acid to cut through the richness and spice.
Good fruit to hold its own against the flavour.
Texture and weight to balance the dish.

Next time you’re at the restaurant in Red Hill, we’d love to help with what to pour alongside your meal. by @avaniwines

Our dish of the week.

Creamy burrata torn over a bright, spiced tomato chutney, crisp papri for crunch, and a cooling cucumber kachumber to bring it all together, finished with wild garlic flowers straight from our garden here at Avani.

The pairing: our Amrit Pinot Gris 2025 (Skin Contact). Spice, blood orange and hints of bergamot tea on the nose, savoury and textural with dry tannins and a long finish.

Come taste it for yourself at the Avani Cellar Kitchen, right here in Red Hill, Mornington Peninsula. by @avaniwines

Spring has arrived at Avani

Down in Red Hill, the vines are waking up - first buds breaking through after winter, new growth just starting to show across the vineyard.

There’s no better time to visit our Mornington Peninsula cellar door. Pull up a seat for lunch, taste your way through our estate wines, and watch the season turn right in front of you.

On the tasting list this spring:

Amrit Saignée - light, textural Pinot Noir, perfect for spring, best served chilled

Amrit Chardonnay 2025 - fresh citrus, honeydew and a hint of cashew, textural with an elegant finish. Wild yeast fermented in old oak, unfined & unfiltered

Amrit Sauvignon Blanc 2023 - fig, feijoa and a hint of jalapeño, textural with a long finish. From Shoreham, wild yeast fermented in old French oak, unfined & unfiltered

Mornington Peninsula. Restaurant + wine tasting. Spring vineyard views. What more could you want?

Have you noticed the Garlic flowers on the drive down to the Peninsula?

Every morning we take a walk around the property to see whats poppped up! Deepak then brings these alive through the menu - Garlic flowers over burrata and paneer. Fennel picked in season. Grapes off the vine, pickled and used through the dishes.

It’s local produce woven into an Indian-inspired menu - our way of bringing the two together.

Ever wondered what happens in the vineyard as the vines wake up for a new season?

In Episode 3 of Wine 101 with Rohit, we’re looking at what’s been happening in our Mornington Peninsula vineyard this spring.

Spring is an important time for viticulture - as the vines come out of dormancy, the focus shifts to supporting healthy growth right from budburst. At Avani, our approach to biodynamic farming includes using biodynamic sprays to build healthy soil and encourage a thriving vineyard ecosystem.

It’s all part of the work that goes into farming grapes the natural way, before they make their way into the bottle.

Meet Amrit Saignée

Not a rosé - a chilled Pinot that is the perfect drink for Sping - fresh, juicy and fruit driven.

Grown on a young vine vineyard in Merricks North, the pinot noir juice is ‘saigneed’ - which means ‘to bleed’ in French - into old French oak barrels where it is fermented wild yeast and aged for 11 months.

If you’re after a seated wine tasting on the Mornington Peninsula or a Red Hill cellar door with a view, this is the one to try this weekend.

You’ve probably heard the words organic and biodynamic used in the wine world — but what do they actually mean?

Organic
At its heart, organic farming means growing grapes without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers.

Biodynamics
Takes a more holistic approach, focusing on healthy soils, biodiversity and the life of the vineyard. It also views the vineyard as one interconnected ecosystem. It’s about working with natural cycles and encouraging balance between the vines, soil, plants and surrounding environment.

For Shashi, these aren’t just labels — they’re part of how we’ve approached our vineyards for years.

Over the coming weeks, Shashi will be breaking down what organic and biodynamic farming actually looks like at Avani — and why we believe it matters in the glass.

Stay tuned. by @avaniwines
