My interview during Books & Brunch with @blackyogateachersalliance was an honor. What a gift to be of service and to be seen, witnessed and heard by such a credible group of yoga teachers on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in spring. The first question that @tamara.jeffries asked me was, “what is Your Yoga Business about?”

I replied, “it’s about:
•the entrepreneurial journey, and the life journey of becoming your dreams as I and my clients did
•trial + error and learning things the hard way
•failure being an option
•wild success
•learning how to be a boss
•perseverance —through Covid, divorce, death, the loss of two businesses – and making it to the other side
•AND it’s about business: 20 chapters & 45 usable templates that will carry you through your entrepreneurial journey with CEU credit along the way.”

It was a passionate, soulful hour of real talk.

We got real about:
•what you need your yoga business to do for you and why?
•how not to confuse your self worth in a negotiation
•what it really takes to be an entrepreneur
•and that it is OK for it NOT to be for everyone ~ no one said you have to make your living teaching yoga, or that it makes you a “real” yoga teacher if you do so
•how integrating is niching down
•how being accessible doesn’t mean you have to work for free
•the most audacious thing about being a yoga teacher

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion. ~ Henry David Thoreau by @avantaylor

💪🏾 there’s power in spending intentional time working ON your business, not just IN it.

This week concluded a three-week strategy series with 18 beautiful souls—a mix of yoga teachers and yoga therapists, seasoned professionals and emerging entrepreneurs.

We started with two central questions:

✨ Where is your business going and why?
✨ How are you going to get there?

For three weeks, we stepped out of the day-to-day to assess where we were, maximize what was working, clarify our offerings, define our goals, build plans, and understand the necessary sales, marketing and infrastructure needed to progress.

👉🏾 Uncertainty became clarity.
👉🏾 Dreams became goals.
👉🏾 Goals became priorities.
👉🏾 Priorities became action plans.
👉🏾 Doubt became belief.
👉🏾 Statis became flow.

We each left with a commitment to what comes next and the self + group accountability to follow through.

That’s what time spent on strategy can do.

When you get clear about where you’re going, why and how, you can start making meaningful progress.

Congratulations to the entire cohort, I can’t wait to celebrate your wins.

5 years ago today, 5 hours before I found out my father had passed away.

Sitting in the sunshine in Lenox, MA fresh out of a few days at Kripalu as the very first Artist in Residence.

I took a quick photo for some silly reason, which now feels like a before >> and after.

I unknowingly captured a moment of transition, a moment of my own becoming.

Clarity is queen. 👑

After negotiating thousands of collaborations, I’ve learned that most business relationships don’t go wrong because someone has bad intentions.

They go wrong because something wasn’t clear.

Before you say yes to your next collaboration, slow down, ask questions and think about what could go wrong.

This matters even more when you’re doing business with people you know, like, love, and trust as many of us do in the yoga space.

It’s a myth that taking the time and making a clear agreement makes a relationship less personal—it actually protects the relationship.

Owning a small business means learning to be the boss.

And bosses get crystal clear before they get to work.

PS ~ here’s what you want to get clear on:

✨ The Give: What exactly are you responsible for?
✨ The Get: What are you receiving in return?
✨ The Full Scope: Who is responsible for what?
✨ The Deadline: When does everything need to happen?
✨ The Divorce: What happens if things don’t go according to plan?

Knowledge gives you the playbook.
Wisdom is knowing what to do with what you know. 🤌🏽

A client shared after a recent workshop:

“Your audit puts satisfaction in the same column as the money. Most audits leave the founder’s joy off the books. Yours prices it.”

That stopped me in my tracks.

Because it perfectly captures the difference between knowledge and wisdom.

Knowledge is what you know.
Wisdom is knowing what to do with what you know. 🤌🏽

I know how to audit a business and how to look at revenue, offers, pricing, positioning, and growth potential.

But nearly two decades of working with entrepreneurs and being an entrepreneur has taught me that the numbers never tell the whole story.

Because what good is a profitable business if you hate running it?

Wisdom asks different questions:

✨ Does it make money?
✨ Does it make sense?
✨ Does it make you happy?

When you hire a coach, knowledge matters.

✨
But you also want someone with enough experience to know what matters, when it matters, and when the conventional answer isn’t the right answer for you.
✨

That’s the difference between knowing business and knowing how to guide someone in building one.

Asking for the budget when negotiating is a critical step towards increasing your overall revenue. And that’s why we discussed & shouted it out during our workshop, The Modern Yoga Entrepreneur. 🙌🏽

When asked to provide a pay rate for an opportunity, try not to be the first one to give a rate. You limit your chance of being paid a premium if you do. There are companies that have room within their budget to pay a premium for your services, IF YOU ASK FOR IT.

When negotiating with a company that you think can afford a premium rate, lead the conversation by asking, “Do you have an ideal budget in mind for the activation?” 🧐

I have been able to charge $5000 for the same hour of instruction that also bills for $500, by simply asking for the budget.

This will prompt them to give you the rate first, and what they tell you is often much higher than what you would have charged.

I am so not over the convening that was the Black Yoga Teacher’s Association 10 Year Anniversary “Still Rising!”

It was deeply nourishing and deeply affirming to be at a #yoga event where Black Yogis were the majority. Such grace, class, humor, humility, joooooooy, solidarity and respect— for each other and for the practice we all hold dear.
