A luminous body suspended in darkness: in Ancient Dancer 1, underwater photography takes on an almost cosmic dimension. The jellyfish, positioned to the left, anchors the composition, while its tentacles guide the eye across the negative space. Black and white brings out the translucent textures; fine lines and soft folds create a rhythm that makes stillness feel like movement. The author connects this vision to night dives, when a torch isolates the creature and suspended particles resemble distant stars. His adjustments to contrast and whites emphasise its delicate structure without sacrificing its ethereal presence. Part of the ongoing Ancient Dancer series, this photograph turns observation into a meditation on fragility and time. Its strength lies in making a real encounter feel otherworldly.

Un corpo luminoso sospeso nel buio: in Ancient Dancer 1, la fotografia subacquea assume una dimensione quasi cosmica. La medusa, decentrata a sinistra, dà peso alla composizione, mentre i tentacoli accompagnano lo sguardo attraverso lo spazio negativo. Il bianco e nero valorizza le trasparenze; linee sottili e morbide pieghe costruiscono un ritmo che suggerisce movimento nell’immobilità. L’autore lega questa visione alle immersioni notturne, quando la torcia isola la creatura e le particelle sospese ricordano stelle lontane. Gli interventi su contrasto e bianchi ne evidenziano la struttura delicata, preservandone la presenza eterea. One of my first encounters with the Ancient Dancer, back in 2012, made with a small compact camera.
Years later, this encounter became part of The Ancient Dancer ! an ongoing series exploring the mysterious, almost otherworldly presence of jellyfish in the darkness of the sea.

A reminder that sometimes we can create art with inexpensive equipment. It’s not always about the gear, but about the vision behind the image.

WORMHOLE

A wormhole in the deep sea.

At first glance, it doesn’t look like a sea worm.
It looks like a portal.

Sabella pavonina, commonly known as the peacock worm

During a night dive, I found myself hypnotised by its almost perfectly symmetrical design !the bristles stretching outward, creating a strange tunnel that feels more like a scene from a sci-fi movie than something found beneath the surface.

You stare at it for a few seconds; not focusing on the detail but on the overall image… and your mind starts imagining another world on the other side.

But there’s no portal.
No distant galaxy.
Just a tiny sea worm, floating in the darkness of the ocean.

And somehow, that makes it even more fascinating.

For a moment, the ocean feels less like an ocean… and more like from another dimension.

The few seconds of a bubble ring you create, floating down there in the pure void suspended between existence and weightlessness. A perfect circle appears, moves through the darkness, and disappears almost as quickly as it came.
