@averybarnesgallery presents its fourth consecutive presentation at Seattle Art Fair, featuring the solo debut of Nahom Ghirmay (@nahom_artsy).

The presentation, titled The Nomadic Souls, comprises an entirely new body of work by the Seattle-based artist.

Among the works on view, three paintings mark a collaboration with multidisciplinary woodworker Jacoby Hinton (@jacobyhintonart), each paired with a bespoke frame conceived in direct response to the painting it accompanies.

In these three works, painting and structure operate as one continuous practice.

A contemporary Seattle gallery, Avery Barnes champions artists who push boundaries across mediums and centers humanity through compelling exhibitions, diverse narratives, and community-focused programming.

Nahom Ghirmay makes his solo debut at Seattle Art Fair — presenting all new work under the exhibition The Nomadic Souls, marking our 4th annual presentation with the fair.
This one means something. Seattle gets to witness one of its own take this next step, and we couldn’t be prouder to walk alongside him.

Deep gratitude to Berette S. Macaulay for her generous and illuminating words on Nahom’s work. Her voice adds depth to this moment in ways we’re so grateful for.

Thank you to @seattleartfair for having us back for a fourth year running.

And to Ja-coby Hinton, where we will highlight a special artistic collaboration with both him and Nahom — thank you for the care and craft you brought to this show.

To our hometown community: come celebrate with us. This is a milestone, and just the beginning of where Nahom’s work will continue to flourish from🙌🏾

Meet Nahom Ghirmay, a Seattle-based artist born in Asmara, Eritrea in 1993.

Through portraiture and narrative painting, Ghirmay explores memory, migration, and the evolving notion of home. His work reflects on identity, displacement, and the emotional landscapes we carry within us, while creating a sense of comfort, refuge, and home from within. It offers a deeply human meditation on belonging, resilience, and inner sanctuary.

Today, we are excited to reveal Nahom’s newest works at the VIP preview of You’ve Had It In You All Along.

This past weekend, we opened the doors of Avery Barnes Gallery’s new home — an intimate, loft-style space built with intention, for the community who have made this work possible.

The evening was quiet by design. Curated. A gathering of the most important voices in this industry — emerging and established collectors, curators, institutional leaders — sharing the same room, the same table, the same sense of arrival. No formality. No distance. Just the kind of space where real questions get asked, real relationships take root, and the conversations that form around art become just as vital as the art itself. Because we believe that bringing these figures together — to learn from one another, to pour into one another — is how we grow into the best possible stewards of art and culture. That is the responsibility we hold as a gallery. And through every pivot, we remain committed to centering this — with intention, with resilience, and with an unwavering investment in what this work can become.

What unfolded was beyond what we could have scripted: the feeling of possibility. Of standing together in a place where we have watched real growth happen over time and knowing — it’s working. The quiet understanding that we can build the future together. That we hold, collectively, the power to transform the trajectory of the artists we believe in - and with that, our future. Woven through it all, a luminous performance by Mario Layne Fabrizio stilled the room in the best way.

This is the space we’ve been building toward. And it’s only the beginning.

We are now open by appointment!

Inspired by her mother and two sisters, this work honors the women who helped shape Martinez into who she is. Together, they formed a close-knit community of young mothers raising children alongside one another. The time she spent with them gave her the tools for life. In Martinez’s memory, they seemed to have it all together, even though they were so young themselves. What stays with her most is how much they gave - offering the best parts of themselves through care, example, and love.

Within “You’ve Had It In You All Along”, the work reflects the passing down of life’s essential tools through intimacy and shared experiences. It speaks to the way we become ourselves through observing, admiring, growing, and learning alongside those who first hold us. - Avery Barnes, curator taken in Pioneer Square, Seattle, Washington by @averybarnesgallery

PRESS RELEASE | Avery Barnes Gallery announces a pivotal expansion and relocation in Seattle — marking a defining evolution of the gallery’s long-term vision and program.

Built from the foundation of Pioneer Square’s creative resurgence, the gallery now enters a new phase focused on institutional growth, international dialogue, and a broader platform for the artists shaping contemporary culture today.

This transition reflects years of intentional growth, curatorial development, and collector engagement — positioning the gallery for a more ambitious future while remaining deeply rooted in Seattle.

To close this chapter, we invite collectors, patrons, and the community to join us for our final Pioneer Square Art Walk on May 7. A limited selection of works by Cristina Martinez, Tariqa Waters, and Robert Wade remain available ahead of the transition.

“You’ve Had It In You All Along” marks a significant moment within Seattle’s cultural landscape. Bringing together Barbara Earl Thomas, Tariqa Waters, Cristina Martinez, Robert Wade, and Nahom Ghirmay, this exhibition holds vision, endurance, influence, and transformation in full view.

For me, this show became more than an exhibition title—it became the truth of what it took to arrive here. The months leading up to opening asked for perseverance in ways I could not have anticipated, making this moment all the more meaningful.

At its core, this exhibition honors what each artist has carried over time: the depth of practice, the strength of vision, and the reality that impact and recognition do not always arrive at the same pace.

- Avery 🤍

If you were not able to attend, I warmly invite you to visit the gallery or explore the digital catalog of available works. To request - DM us “STILL DREAMING” …
