A vocal workshop for Queer, Trans, and Nonbinary voices interested in accessing a more embodied and confident relationship to their speaking and/or singing voice. We will go over basic vocal anatomy, breathwork, and get into a variety of playful exercises to experiment with sound. Whether you consider yourself a singer, are shifting your voice to match your gender presentation, use your voice at actions/public speaking events or just want to learn a new skill, you will be able to apply these techniques to your everyday experience. Everyone deserves to feel embodied in their voice whether they’re performers, public speakers, or folks who want to find more confidence in their voice day-to-day. That’s why Rhea Tepp (they/them) started @avocado_spaceship. Rhea primarily works with queer and trans people, providing gender-affirming voice coaching and sound exploration. Rhea draws on two decades of experience as a musician and facilitator to create a healing space for people as they play and explore their voice.

Most folks who work with Rhea have had negative experiences using their voice in recitals, church, or simply ordering coffee due to bias and gender dysphoria. Rhea helps them develop a deeper connection to their voice through music, safely explore their singing or speaking voice, or they’re singers or speakers desiring a vocal tune up.

Rhea says: “To know that I’m someone who people feel comfortable around exploring that gives me so much joy; and it’s a responsibility I’m really grateful to have.”

BLACK HOLE SUN, the 2nd single on my Omnichord Covers album is here! Link in bio. I learned so much experimenting with the creation of this, as this project is also part of my self study learning to do all the things in a home studio; produce, record, mix, master. I have a lot to learn, and also, my exploration of what it means to RELEASE creative work, is part of my practice of valuing process.

MAJOR gratitude goes to Fire Toolz @fire_toolz for her sample packs that played a huge part in what this song became. It’s such a pleasure and privilege to collaboratively world build with the bits and pieces of someone else’s creations! Truly feels radical and part of dreaming queer worlds, fantasyscapes and survival methods outside of a crumbling world.

Song choice! While I’m L.A. born and lived here the majority of my life, my parents moved to Seattle where I was mostly raised, during the grunge era. Black Hole Sun was released in 1994, the same year Kurt Cobain died. Chris Cornell, from Soundgarden said in an interview, “I wrote it in my head on a 35-40 minute drive to Seattle. It sparked from something a news anchor said on TV that I heard wrong. I spent a lot of time spinning those melodies in my head so I wouldn’t forget them. I got home and whistled it into a Dictaphone…. I was just sucked in by the music and I was painting a picture with the lyrics. It’s really difficult for people to create their own life and their own freedom. It’s going to become more and more difficult, and it’s going to create more and more disillusioned people who become dishonest and angry and are willing to fuck the next guy to get what they want.”

link to song in bio! The Omnichord started as my quarantine companion. A battery operated fairytale I could play in parks, riverbeds, bathtubs and beneath weighted blankets. I was set to release an Omnichord covers album and then my mom died. Her passing was a release of many things, but not this. Polychronic time is a balm. We can revisit the mysteries that live inside us, reshape them, or say goodbye. This year I am exploring what it means to RELEASE. Thank you for listening!
