As part of the Büro für problematische Komposition, I always look forward to these concerts. It’s always a chance to work with like-minds, try things out, follow the “what if?”s (in a good way), and test ideas that don’t fit neatly into boxes. This round, I’m happily back with Steffen Lohrey @_adnos for Maza_2. Come in numbers. We like data.

The Büro für problematische Komposition, founded in Hamburg in 2019, is a collective of multimedia composers, musicians, and video artists. Taking risks, experimenting, and exploring the unpredictable are at the core of their artistic work.

This year, the Büro invites the @benmo_trio , an ensemble focused on contemporary works of the 20th and 21st centuries - and not just in the traditional piano trio format. Their work often involves experimental instrumental colors and layered connections between dance and theater. Close collaboration with composers is central to their practice, as they aim to explore new sound worlds and stage forms, and bring the “ideal artistic vision” to life.

One of my favourite scenes from children opera ‘Tiefengeflüster’: the Funkelstein scene where our percussionist and harpist sing and play the glass harp together with our soloist. A beautiful mix of voices, sounds, performed by @sofiapavonemezzo, @moritz_koch_percussion and @marta_brezzo.

BOREAL premieres tonight, on 6.6.26 at @jazzhall.hamburg Hamburg ❄️

A new piece by Aigerim Seilova & Steffen Lohrey @_adnos for ensemble and live electronics. The piece treats the ensemble as living matter within a dynamic electronic environment, sounds captured mid-gesture, suspended, and reintroduced in forms that bear only traces of their origin. What remains is never quite what entered.

It was a great honour to play @sankt_hedwig_mitte St. Hedwig in Berlin.

The programme combined classical & contemporary music, and it worked so well. Since the concert, so many people have sent me kind messages, photos, and videos on Instagram and Facebook. Some of them wrote:

“Danke für dein wundervolles Spiel gestern in der Sankt Hedwig. Es hat uns umgehauen, was in einer Stunde alles passieren kann und dass eine Orgel so klingen kann!”
or
“Thank you for playing so beautifully! All my friends and I were in awe and didn’t know that an organ can sound like you played it.”

I really couldn’t ask for more.

Sometimes I struggle with some of the more conservative views in the organ world, but concerts like this remind me what it’s all about: the connection between music and the audience. You can’t make people like something, but you can share new sounds, new ideas, and show the endless possibilities of the organ.

Even when the music is challenging, with the right dramaturgy you can at least invite people to listen.

That’s what I love about art. There are so many artists, each with their own voice and way of communicating. And the more different those voices are, the richer our world becomes.

I’m especially happy that so many comments were about the contemporary pieces. Thank you, my dear friends and composers Michael Bonaventure and Aigerim Seilova @avolies, for your beautiful music ❤️

👉 Sie studierte Komposition am Moskauer Konservatorium und promoviert derzeit in künstlerischer Forschung an der HfMT Hamburg.

Am 9. jedes Monats um 18:00 Uhr veranstaltet der LV Hamburg des DKV den SALON ZEITGENÖSSISCHE MUSIK in der Geschäftsstelle des Landesmusikrats Hamburg
(Alte Druckerei, Bahrenfelder Straße 73 D (Hinterhof), 22765 Hamburg).

Der Salon bietet einen geschützten Raum für ehrliche Gespräche und den Austausch unter Gleichgesinnten. Junge und junggebliebene Mitglieder des Landesverbandes Hamburg sind herzlich willkommen, ebenso wie externe Fachkollegen und -kolleginnen.

Diesmal gestalten unsere Kolleg*innen Dong Zhou (Hamburg) sowie Shuoxin Tan (Köln) den Abend gemeinsam.

Als Komponist*innen und Performer*innen stellen sie ihr Werke wie das offenes Improvisationssystem „Found Violin" vor und geben Einblick in ihre Arbeit mit SuperCollider, Klangobjekten und offenen Improvisationsformen.

In this version of geGETet (Orkhon_stream), presented at the TENOR 2025 Conference in Beijing, I position Orkhon symbols within a current compositional framework. Traditional Chinese instruments interact with electronics, digital notation / animated score and visuals, articulating a layered relationship between historical sign systems and present-day musical thought.
