The Ultimate EGOT List (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony)

The EGOT, a phrase coined Miami Vice's Philip Michael Thomas, represents earning the highest individual, competitive entertainment honors in the areas of television (Emmy), music (Grammy), film (Oscar) and theatre (Tony).

To date, 22 people have received all four awards with Robert Lopez holding the records for having completed his in record time (10 years) and as the youngest ever (39 years, 7 days) when he won an Oscar for Best Original Song ("Let It Go," from Frozen) in 2014. Helen Hayes took the longest time to complete hers (45 years) and Sir John Gielgud currently stands as the oldest to win (87 years, 133 days). Only Robert Lopez has won all four awards twice.

Of the 2 artists who have achieved EGOT, none of them did in EGOT order. Eight hit Oscar first, seven started with a Tony, one with an Emmy and six with a Grammy.

John Legend became the first African-American male to hit EGOT, completing the quartet of awards at the 2018 Emmys for producing Jesus Christ Superstar Live. Steven Spielberg is the newest member of the club, earning a Grammy award as a producer on Music by John Williams, winner of the Best Music Film Grammy.

In 2023, TheaterMania writer Zachary Stewart criticized the practice of "selling" producer credits for shows favored to win a Tony as a "shortcut" to EGOT status. He drew a distinction between the producers who actually do the work of organizing the production of a show and investing producers who merely help finance it, often late in the award season.

Superlatives

Most Emmys: Marvin Hamlisch, Mel Brooks and Mike Nichols (4). Most Grammys: John Legend (10). Most Oscars: Marvin Hamlisch (3). Most Tonys: Mike Nichols (9). Nichols has the most awards in total with 15.

“I hope that he’s looking down somewhere at us here in San Francisco, many years later and seeing the distance traveled and that we maybe are swimming in the seas of some change. So this is for you, Ian”

Andrew Scott accepting his MVFF Award for Acting & Producing for Elsinore, and of course making us emotional along the way. Such a beautiful way to dedicate this moment to Ian.

‘Verity’ Review: Anne Hathaway is a Diva Down in Michael Showalter’s Trashy Riff on ‘Gone Girl’ [C+]

Over the past two years alone, the three film adaptations of Colleen Hoover’s wildly popular novels have grossed nearly $500 million at the box office, creating a new kind of reliable IP. The characters often have comically unique names (Diem and Ledger in Reminders of Him come to mind) and face dramas that make soap-opera storylines feel realistic, but the escapism in Hoover’s stories has a stronghold over her audience. The film adaptations have similarly found their niche, as It Ends With Us, Regretting You, and Reminders of Him lean hard into clichés and melodrama, feeling like modern-day interpretations of the women’s pictures of the 1940s. Verity (the latest film in the Hooververse) has a different kind of edge to it, specifically because of its leading lady star, Anne Hathaway. It may be a low bar, but with Verity, director Michael Showalter (The Big Sick, The Eyes of Tammy Faye) has made the best Hoover adaptation to date, creating a throwback erotic thriller that succeeds when it focuses on Hathaway.

Verity opens with Gayle King interviewing Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) at her Architectural Digest-ready home in Vermont. Verity is an extremely successful author, always finding her way into the mind of the villains in the crime thrillers she pens. She knows that she built her career on the villainesses in her books and that only enhances her persona. The film isn’t quite sure what to do with that persona, but it’s still comical nonetheless. Would someone with the chilly exterior of an unknowable ice queen really go on “Hot Ones” or “Call Her Daddy”? Probably not, but it kicks off an early camp factor that doesn’t let up.

'Digger' Review: Iñárritu’s Soggy Satire Lands with a Timely Thud Instead of Cruising to Great Heights [D+]

Early in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s latest film, Digger, our protagonist, Digger Rockwell (Tom Cruise), describes the origin story of his unusual name. With an exaggerated Texas twang and a storyteller’s bravado, he points to a golden shovel on the mantel and shares that his grandfather was a fellow oilman who (you guessed it) made their family fortune digging for oil. It’s a comical, if not on-the-nose, detail in Iñárritu’s script that’s befitting of the style of theatrical storytelling he’s aiming for, and yet, it highlights the film’s primary issue. Like other entries in Iñárritu’s filmography ('Birdman,' 'Babel'), the auteur once again succumbs to his worst impulses, over-explaining the film’s themes without trusting the audience. 'Digger' should be exciting in its embrace of provocative ideas and storytelling techniques, but it ultimately isn’t the timely, radical work of satire it believes itself to be.

'Digger' opens with an uncanny view into the sights and sounds of nature, as if it’s taking place within a diorama. Nature is important to the world of the film, especially as fossil fuels and climate change have destroyed the health of the planet. Meanwhile, Digger Rockwell lives in his own sanctuary, sleeping in a grand bedroom with his ancient cat, Maggie, as family portraits and hunting trophies adorn the walls of his opulent manor. It’s brilliant work by production designers Dennis Gassner ('Bugsy,' 'Into the Woods') and Richard L. Johnson (art director on 'The Hateful Eight' and 'Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood'), as they incorporate rich details to show that Digger’s wealth was inherited from his grandfather, and he hasn’t done much with it. Digger has remained closely tied to the oil business, though, and his heedlessness will soon prove to have consequences.

2026 MTV Video Music Awards: Madonna Dominates with Seven Wins Including Artist of the Year

The Queen of Pop remained on her throne tonight as Madonna walked away from the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with the most wins for any artist, taking seven trophies, the most in a single night in her career and her first VMA wins since 1999. Madonna famously, or infamously, performed "Like a Virgin" at the very first VMAs in 1984 and even remarked her speech when she won Artist of the Year that most people in the audience probably weren't even born yet.

“First of all, I would like to thank my fingers because I can always count on them,” she said, about the first VMAs. “I had a little problem with my shoes … and I dove onto the stage to try to make myself look cute and sexy and like I meant to do it,” she said. “I went backstage feeling really proud of myself and my manager told me that my career was over.”

She continued, saying “I spent the last year-and-a-half finding myself, believing in myself and really making the music I wanted to make … My hope for all of you here tonight is that you spend the next year or the next 10 years or the rest of your life doing the same.”

In her first VMAs performance in 23 years, she opened the show with Sabrina Carpenter (on piano) for their collab "Bring Your Love" and Charli XCX for their new collaboration on the recently released "Danceteria" remix, along with Julia Garner and Seth Rogen, and Debi Mazar, Andrew Watt, Tony Ward, and Fab 5 Freddie, all of whom have populated her life and career since its beginning.

In addition to Artist of the Year, "Bring Your Love" won Best Collaboration and her 13-minute Confessions II - The Film won Best Choreography, Best Cinematography, Best Album, Best Dance and Best Long-Form Video.

2027 Oscar Predictions: BEST CASTING (September)

After its inaugural year as a new category last season, diving into who will be nominated this year gives us just one example of how the casting branch thought about what makes a nominee and a winner in this new Oscar field. How much did it help us and how much did it make things even harder to predict?

It’s probably a bit of shorthand to use likely SAG cast nominees, and I think some of us utilized that as a potential barometer, but they’re really two very different fields and voters. The performer-based Screen Actors Guild nominating committee will often highlight a large cast for a film that doesn’t make the Best Picture cut but all five of last year’s Casting Oscar nominees were in the BP top 10.

So what does that all mean for the second year of the category? As with the first, the top contenders are likely going to come from the big players in Best Picture like The Odyssey and La Bola Negra. Films with smaller casts, like Wild Horse Nine, might seem at a disadvantage, but with the two leads going through multiple castings before landing on John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, plus a newcomer like Mariana di Giralomo, it’s in the mix. Although, one does think of Weapons last year, which scrapped nearly the entire cast for a new one but came up short here. Fjord and All of a Sudden feel like the cream of the international films that is rising to the top (but don’t count out titles like Possible Love or Coward) and biopics are once again abound this season, with Elsinore, I Play Rocky and Being Huemann among them.

‘Sense and Sensibility’ Review: Georgia Oakley’s Exquisite Adaptation is a Fresh Spin on a Classic for a New Generation [A-]

When Jane Austen was first writing her debut novel, “Sense and Sensibility,” she penned it under the working title “Elinor and Marianne.” Like her best works, the book is an incisive look at marriage as an economic proposition, but, perhaps most importantly, it’s a tale of two sisters and how differently they approach love. There certainly isn’t a shortage of film and television adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels, so when it was announced that Georgia Oakley (Blue Jean) was developing her own take on “Sense and Sensibility,” many were curious how she would put her own spin on the source material. Ang Lee’s 1995 version (gorgeously adapted by Emma Thompson) certainly casts a long shadow, but the power of classic literature is that new generations will keep discovering and reinterpreting it. Just this year, Emerald Fennell crafted her own spin on Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights,” and Christopher Nolan struck box office gold with his version of “The Odyssey,” proving there is always new material to mine, even if it makes literary purists uneasy. Sense and Sensibility isn’t a radical, risk-taking adaptation, but rather one that captures an aspect of Austen’s novel that’s often underdiscussed. By centering the relationship between Elinor and Marianne, the latest edition of Sense and Sensibility is a fresh spin on a classic for a new generation.

Sense and Sensibility begins with Marianne (Esmé Creed-Miles) lying in a field outside of her family’s home at Norland. Unlike other versions of “Sense and Sensibility,” Oakley doesn’t begin the film with a contract but with a character, signaling who has the most to learn from the story’s events.

@focusfeatures will release 'Sense and Sensibility' only in theaters on October 16. Read the full review by @sophia_cim at awardswatch.com (link in bio). by @awardswatcherik
