Nobody’s coming.

That shadow that you’re afraid of…
that figure in the shape of a person, failure, or disapproval…

It’s not real. Nothing + no one is coming.

You only fear the shadows when you don’t know what’s making them. So turn on the proverbial¹ — + perhaps even quite literal—light.

And then whatever it is you’re stopping yourself from doing for fear of those shadows…go do the thing.

Nobody’s coming for you but you. That shadow is actually the future you dared imagine + it’s ready when you are.²

²This was a personal note I wrote to myself…not just about fear + shadowy figures but the act of continually refocusing my perspective. I’m neurodivergent so maybe STAYING focused feels unattainable…but continually REfocusing…now, that we can do. :)

I thought it only fitting to use the last time I got in frame for ME. So this was #shotbyme for me.

Anywho! Stay safe out there, kids!

aye Happy Indigenous People’s Day! One of the most unexpectedly moving moments serendipity has ever handed me + my camera: these incredible Aztec dancers based here in Houston, The Danza Azteca Taxcayolotl, brought me to tears I had to fight through to capture just a few shots of their traditional dance ritual.
To every indigenous person who is fighting the erasure of their very existence (let alone cultural specificity)… For all the children who were forced through assimilation schools where their heritage was wiped and replaced with trauma…
For every spirit desecrated by a pipeline or a portrait nobody needed or wanted…

To every Black person who won’t do the DNA ancestry business but will ask their aunts for the hundredth time what tribe our Big Mama’s people are from…

I see you. Beyond this day. I see you.

To the space* between you + the camera you forgot to care was there.

And…to posting again (Woot! Look at me 😅🤞🏽) and allowing my relationship to this platform evolve. I don’t want to say I’m in my “soft gworl era” because I hate overworked phrases that don’t feel fun in the mouth but suffice to say I’m learning new things about myself, life, love and connection every day. And I’m thawing out real nice like 😙🤭

In honor of the homies having a lil shindigly over at @studio808__ tonight… take a lil jaunt with me 🚶🏽‍♀️

The people, projects, + places I’m drawn to all welcome play. My favorites not only ENCOURAGEd but SUPPORT it. Playfulness is probably the second thing you’d notice about me in person and while it comes naturally to me, I’m used to masking tf out of it in public + playing only in the places (read: amongst the people) where I feel safest¹. As of late, I’ve been doing some internal work to bring that “safest place” with me wherever I go… so that perhaps, just maybe, I can show the internet² what a couple handfuls of y’all already know: ya gurl is made of magic 🙂‍↕️✨🦄

Haven’t been able to get this question off my mind since Monday… —and I’ll come back to @mrafalomo and this cool thing we did in an upcoming post—but come take a walk 🚶🏽‍♀️ with me, will ya?

I spend a lot of time playing peekab👀 with impermanence…
There’s a simpler, more comfortable but seemingly vulnerable conversation to be had around my discomfort with the camera, mirrors and generally only recently starting to learn my face… and the adjacent, well-worn argument around visual arts and entertainment -and algodaddy- rewarding fvkery over authenticity…not for nothing, it’s these and other high horses that have helped me justify my use of the shadowy lurk as a form of protest.

But the real tender meat is around being PERCEIVED rather than SEEN.
I associate a certain degree of danger [read: fear] around the former—I think, in fact, what y’all may be reading (or at least I think I’m sellin lol) as mystery is really just a poorly diguised control issue. And that dis-ease is mirrored in the quiet dissonance between the range of emotions I capture versus what I’m willing to display onhere…
There is a fine but perceptible line, however, between mystery + hiding. That said, I think as artists we can’t help but put a little piece of who we are + what we’re going through in our work. And maybe it’s in that space I can find forgiveness for myself bc I very much communicate who I am, what I value, + the yes/and that is Us in my work. I’ve been right here the whole time, hiding in plain sight.

Holy moly, that is so sweet 🥹 Well, stay tuned I’m purusing my creative archives (aka the endless albums of my Lightroom + iCloud libraries lol) with this question in mind + the goal of reintroducing you to what it’s looked to like to try to hold on for dear f’n life to my creative prowess while I evolved/unlearned/remembered and uncoupled over the past…time 😅. Yes, there will be story times in “real” posts lol. Yes, this is to propell me to follow through. And yes, you could thank April Kae and a couple of your baby mamas for inspiring this vulnerability. Happy Be Who You Are For Your Pride Month, Lovas. 😉🌈

If you have the opportunity to catch @houstoncontemporary ‘s latest offering: The House it’s absolutely worth the investment of your time.

Featuring: Costume + Set work by @amiller15

The phrase “immersive experience” is thrown around entirely too freely these days; HOWEVER, in THIS case, it could not be more appropriate. I’m grateful to have been able to bear witness + actually come away with knowledge I didn’t arrive with… it both reminded + taught w/out allowing the audience to get too comfortable in one spot for too long (😏 🤌🏾)
