An evening in celebration of Silver, Gold and Objects of Vertu

We were delighted to host so many wonderful guests at our saleroom on Thursday evening to preview our upcoming Silver, Gold and Objects of Vertu auction. Sale now online!

We are proud to present our Arts of India and the Islamic Lands auction this October, comprising over 400 lots spanning tiles, paintings, textiles, manuscripts, early printed books and more.

Highlights include a 17th century Maronite book of prayers, and a beautiful Iraqi silver niello model of the Mosque of Nabi Shiath. The sale also features a notable collection of memorabilia and documents relating to the Holy Pilgrimage, including an extremely rare 19th century ledger on the making of the Kaa’ba’s kiswa.

Wearable Architecture!

A closer look at two exceptional works by master silversmith Vicki Ambery-Smith, featured in our upcoming Silver, Gold & Objects of Vertu sale on Wednesday, 14th October at 12pm:

The 'Venetian' Ring (2019): Hand-crafted in sterling silver with 18ct yellow and 9ct rose gold details. It intricately reimagines Venice’s 15th-century Santa Maria dei Miracoli church, complete with surrounding palazzi and bridges, in miniature scale.

The 'Keble College' Box (2015) – Originally commissioned for the Ashmolean Museum’s Architecture in Miniature exhibition. This silver and rose gold box translates the Gothic Revival brickwork and pinnacles of Oxford’s Keble College into a functional work of art.

With work held in permanent collections at the V&A and the National Museum of Scotland, Ambery-Smith’s pieces seamlessly bridge the gap between silversmithing, fine art, and architecture.

Contemporary silversmith Yusuke Yamamoto finds inspiration in everyday organic textures. For his ‘Sweet Squama Vase’, Yamamoto explored the subtle contrast between irregular natural surfaces and the underlying geometric order that emerges within their structure. To translate this relationship into precious metal, the piece required approximately 25 days of painstaking handwork.

Working with pure .999 fine silver rather than standard sterling, the entire egg-shaped vessel was hand-raised from a single flat sheet using specialised hammers, shaping metal into a seamless 3D form without a single join. The interlocking geometric scales were created through chasing, an ancient technique where small steel punches press intricate textures, depth, and movement directly into the surface.

Born in Japan and now working from his studio in North Wales, Yamamoto’s distinct approach to sculptural metalwork has earned his pieces places in major permanent public collections, including London's Victoria and Albert Museum and Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales.

Bid online now: a Rare ‘Arctic Convoys’ Medal Set and Ephemera

Lot 3 of our Timed Online Antiques & Collectables auction is this extraordinary set of medals and documents that once belonged to Petty Officer Robert H Currie. Found in a Southampton charity shop following an anonymous donation, this group was awarded to those who bravely traversed the Arctic Ocean as escort to supply ships, providing the Russian war effort with much-needed resources and equipment in the latter stages of World War II.

The medals come complete with a collection of Currie’s photographs, documentation and personal writings of his time in the convoy - including entries that record his activities firing on bombers off the coast of England and Wales during the Blitz. Together, these offer a rare and intimate glimpse into the life of a WW2 naval soldier at some of the most intense moments of the conflict.
