On 6 August, our Founder and CEO had the strange and beautiful experience of being recognised as one of Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans at @laparadaza in Rosebank.

As our founder @mongezii23 spent the last few years trying to make work that is honest about where he comes from, attentive to the people he makes it with, and useful beyond the stage. Sometimes you are so busy doing the work that you forget that someone is watching.

This recognition reminded us of that.

Thank you to @mailandguardian for seeing the work and for making space to acknowledge young people who are building, questioning and making things in this country.

We are grateful to the people who have trusted us, challenged us, opened doors for us and stayed when the work was difficult. Whatever this recognition means, it belongs partly to all of you.

We are proud of this one. Quietly, deeply proud.

Our run of Yangthola! at the South African State Theatre has come and gone, but something of it refuses to settle.

Yangthola! stands inside the lived reality of homelessness and substance abuse.It stays there. It listens. It asks, what survives when a person is pushed to the margins and called invisible ?

Night after night, people were left in tears. Some cried through laughter that caught them off guard. Others cried from the quiet recognition of something painfully familiar. To witness that exchange between stage and audience is a privilege we do not take lightly.

We are deeply grateful to the @sastatetheatre for trusting this work and allowing it space to breathe. To every person who sat in the dark with us, thank you for your openness and your courage to feel. And thank you to @plustwose7en for the thoughtful coverage and for preserving this moment.

We are still assembling a future from fragile pieces. Still insisting that these stories matter. Still moving forward, one audience at a time. taken in The South African State Theatre by @aziyeproductions

We use the concept of a “masterclass” loosely but believe me when I say that “Yang’thola” is a justified multi-ward winning body of work. Written by the sharp Mongezi Ntukwana ( @mongezii23 ) & performed by @alex.sono - you witness how words become flesh in one of the most embodied performances to have come out of 2025. Alex! 🏆

In 2024, in preparation for the Yes Let’s Experimental Festival, YANGTHOLA! featured on @officialmorninglive in a reflective interview with writer and director @mongezii23 , alongside @kingsmszwide from @_art_cave.

What started on an experimental platform has since grown into an award winning production, collecting accolades and now stepping onto one of the country’s biggest stages.

A single body carries a city.
A single voice holds a thousand lives.

YANGTHOLA! takes over the Malombo Theatre at the South African State Theatre from 5 to 15 February, inviting audiences into a fiercely imaginative and deeply human story about homelessness and the ingenuity required to survive a brutal capitalist system.

Written and directed by @mongezii23 , this multi-award-winning one-hander follows a street dweller who builds a life from what the world has discarded. Through Poor Theatre techniques, puppetry, found objects, heightened physicality, and inventive storytelling, the production transforms scarcity into spectacle and survival into art.

At the centre is an arresting performance by @alex.sono , winner of Best Fringe Performer at the 2025 Naledi Awards, whose precision and vulnerability hold the stage with devastating clarity. The production earned a Bronze Standard Bank Ovation Award at the 2024 National Arts Festival, marking it as one of the most vital works to emerge that year.

Movement direction by @baleni_ernest gives the piece its muscular rhythm, while @_art_cave played a critical role in developing the work through the Yes Let’s Experimental Festival, a proving ground for daring contemporary theatre.
This is theatre stripped to its bones and alive with imagination.
