Just over two years to the day since I was attacked on Karangahape Road, during Pride week. Crazy to think how much has happened since then, and yet, it still feels like yesterday.

I have always been an activist and ambassador for my community, and it will always be my life mission to stamp out any discrimination, homophobia, or hate of any kind. I often think about how I felt in that moment, I don’t think it will every truly leave me. Weirdly I don’t think I ever want it to because it’s what drives my mission. I never want anyone to feel like that.

Someone recently asked me what pride meant to me, and challenged me as to why it was so important for our community to have their marches, and pride parades, and big gay outs when all they wanted was to be ‘normal’, ‘accepted’, ‘loved’. Ironic question isn’t it? To that, I repeat myself - just over two years to the day since I was attacked on Karangahape Road, during Pride week.

Today we all have a role to play in building a world where our LGBTTQIA+ community can thrive tomorrow. It’s our job to carry on the tireless work of those before us who fought for our visibility, something we’ll continue to do for the next generation of queer lineage.

The most significant thing we can do in our lives is it make people around us feel loved, accepted, and celebrated for the person they are.

It’s the footprint I intend to leave on this world long after I am gone, unlike the one that was left on my back. It’s the mark I intend on making, unlike the one on my face. And it’s how I intend to make people feel, unlike how I was made to feel that day and for a long time after.

So here’s to Pride, and to celebrating one universal message of love.

Funny how one photo can capture a feeling so perfectly.

A little overwhelmed, incredibly proud, and mostly just taking it all in.

To be recognised for mahi I genuinely love doing is pretty special. But this award belongs just as much to our Iwirau whānau and the people at @tvnz.official who back us to keep pushing for better.

I left that room inspired by some extraordinary humans, grateful for how far we’ve come, and excited about how much further we can go.

Appreciation post for my warrior of a mother.

With everything life has thrown at this wahine, she keeps keeping on, with all the class in the world. You’ll never hear her complain. Not once. Despite the cards she’s been dealt, she’s always thinking of everyone else before herself.

She’s a fighter, an inspiration and my world.

Life hasn’t been fair to us of late, but I’m incredibly proud of how she’s faced this past year, and forever in awe of the love and care she still finds for everyone around her.

There’s no kidding how much life can pile on. Wondering whether the money will stretch to the mortgage, the next school uniform, Christmas. Worrying about your health, or someone you love.

Add work, deadlines and a few difficult conversations, and suddenly you’re running on empty with months to go before a break.

Sound familiar? I’ve certainly ticked a few of those boxes lately.

That made hosting today’s wellbeing panel for our @tvnz.official and @rnznewzealand whānau feel particularly meaningful. A chance to pause and have a conversation I needed too.

Three things I’m taking away: ask for support before you hit the wall; check in with people without feeling you need to fix everything; and be willing to talk about what needs to change at work, rather than simply pushing through.

Thank you to Ari Peach, Kylie Ryan and Adele Saunders for your generosity and kōrero, and to Iwirau and P&C for bringing us together.

A year back home this week.

Looking back at some of the stories I’ve covered since, I keep thinking about the people behind them. People who’ve let me into their lives, shared something difficult, made me laugh, taught me something new or trusted me to tell a story that matters to them.

That trust is a privilege. There’s a lot of mahi and care that goes into doing it justice, and I’m grateful to the colleagues who help make that happen every day.

To everyone who’s shared their story with me, thank you. And to everyone watching, sharing and supporting, whether you’ve been here for years or only just joined - I’m so grateful you’re here 🩵
