The K-Days Artist Residency has ended and it was a wild ride from start to finish! Big thanks to the team that helped us share our work with thousands of folks! We got to see people play and engaged with the artwork and visit family and friends throughout the festival! Personally, I got to push my work into new territories with the ingenuity of Michel and really appreciate the learning experience! From napkin doodles that make no sense, to the final outcome, I had a great time. Thanks to those who came to see the work and those who offered encouragement along the way!
I look forward to reviewing submissions in October for the next AIR and sharing our experience with them!

The Lesser Slave Lake Regional Arts Council has been working hard these past few years to brighten their main streets and add more murals to the Town of Slave Lake. Through dedication, support from their town and granting they have done wonders and I am honoured to be a part of this energy. They have been incredible hosts and great to work with. It’s been rewarding to not just enjoy painting, but to be able to enjoy the nature surrounding this space, looking up at the stars and aurora, paddling the lake, sunning at the beach. (I promised I worked hard too! 😉 )

Picture this; I am painting live under a great big tree, downtown Stony Plain, there are artists lining the streets and the jazz and cello players don’t stop playing all day. A horse wagon goes by doing mural tours and my kids have made some friends and are playing at amongst the flowers and pond.

Walking into the studio today late and the iridescent details of this piece reminded me to stop and look. ✨ I painted this work over the course of a few months, trying to figure out what it was communicating with me.. and it come to me near the end, the power of imagination, inspiration, creativity and original thoughts. The light that keeps me going, guides my way. 🕯️ This light can be different for everyone, but it’s important to keep it lit.
Today this piece is telling me it wants a new home, and a more dramatic frame. I feel like it deserves a 3” black gothic style frame, and to sit above a piano. That’s just my opinion though.

Even with no big projects on the go these hands are still moving, maybe a little slower, but with the same creative intention they have always had. More recently I have found my creativity rooted in home and the natural pull of the fall.
I have time at this moment for creative tinkering; nature foraging with friends, going to and hosting creative workshops, garden tending, painting, cooking, researching, reading, and time settling back into routine with my family. I hope to try cyanotype before the snow flies too..
I know there is always more work to do around the corner, my mind is always 5 steps ahead of itself when it comes to project ideas, or mural endeavours.. but sometimes I like to really lean into this part, the ebb in the schedule where only what if’s are demanding my time. taken in B.Adkins Art by @b.adkinsart

Milestone met yesterday. I didn’t think I could do it but I made it up on stage with the microphone, speakers and audience and without too much word salad delivered an artist talk about the project and the KDAYS Artist in Residence program. It’s usually a big fear, but I probably had a little bit of confidence with Michel up there with me, and also from knowing that we both pulled this feat of art installations off. It’s been a BIG go, from start to finish, but having a vision come together and be enjoyed is something special. It’s been cool, from the wild proposals, to initial napkin designs, and then several times coming back down to earth from all the ideas to see how it could manifest. Big thanks to those who came out to Klondike Park yesterday to enjoy the moment with us for the opening reception of the art. I look forward to sharing more pics with you soon! It’s been a BIG week! But my friends we are ready for the opening! 🎠 I have our schedules here and would be glad to see familiar faces over the next 10 days! ✨
We will be at the pony yard in Klondike Park everyday watching the ponies transform, in stories talking about the process and probably enjoying some wild food choices. 🍧 Catch you there!

This Monday, Neotrad Carnival comes together as @eckzstudioz and I head to Klondike Park to set up literal MONTHS of work for KDAYS! A big truck is set to come pick up 10 ponies from my studio, and head to Michels to pick up 10 epic interactive installations. Then we get to finally set them up and see them as one! How very, very exciting.

I am hoping family and friends come out the opening reception, July 18, to celebrate the hard work that has gone into this project. I also hope artists come out too and learn about KDAYS Artist in Residence, as the call to artists is open and you can get some idea (and tips) about what you could pitch to KDAYS for next year.

We are thrilled to welcome back the extremely talented artist Brie Adkins to the Mush Love exhibition.

Brie Adkins is a muralist, artist and advocate, highly passionate about creating vibrant communities and gleaning wisdom from our friends in nature.

She has travelled through Canada, Spain and Italy to refine skills in creating large scale murals. Through her mural work she has raised thousands of dollars towards rural arts education, hosted community art projects that support rural artists and advocated to her county the value of recognizing their artists.

Visually, Brie unravels her personal inner world, by being pulled to the outside world and studying nature through presence and interpretation of its lessons. Her garden, a nearby river and chance encounters with wildlife and nature spirits inform her current studio practice. This appreciation for the natural world and the stories it lends is paired with symbolic motifs like portals and candles to create a narrative that invites personal reflection.

She shares the lessons she has learnt in this regard, through symbology, to explore emotional themes like renewal from rest, the ebbs and flows of life, lucid dreaming, lack of focus and longing. Brie believes nature and the spirit are intertwined and it is through understanding nature that we better understand ourselves. This theme is fluid throughout her practice.

Neotrad Carnival is a menagerie of 10 interactive installations spread throughout Klondike Park during KDays! Each installation offers fun and play, as well as a modern take on classic carnival favourites! The artists have pulled monkeys, clowns, fortune tellers and even ponies into the mix as they explore neotraditional aesthetics and modern day satire through their motifs.
