Our first studio video filmed in 2022, and single available on select streaming platforms, “Black is Beautiful”, composed by Nicholas Payton (@nicholaspayton), the title track of our upcoming debut album from the Black Is Beautiful Experience collective and Rhymshot (@rhymshot) recording label. Inspired by photographer and activist Kwame Brathwaite’s (@kwamebphoto) iconic portrait of his wife and original Grandassa Model Sikolo Brathwaite, this piece pays tribute to the legacy and enduring influence of the Black Is Beautiful movement and the pioneering Grandassa Models (@theoriginalgrandassamodels), a group of women who challenged and redefined beauty standards in the 1960s by fearlessly embracing natural Black beauty.

This piece is brought to life by the extraordinary talent of Marcus Gilmore (@drummerslams), a phenomenal Black woman-led ensemble, and Brandee Younger (@harpista) who appears courtesy of Impulse! Records.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we pay homage to the trailblazing Black women artists who used art and fashion as tools of empowerment and expression 62 years ago and laid the groundwork for future generations to celebrate Black beauty and heritage.

As we celebrate Black Music Month, I’m reminded of the many musicians, artists, and creative visionaries who were part of the African Jazz-Art Society & Studios (AJASS).

Music and photography have always been connected in the curation of my father’s work. Many of the musicians he photographed were also friends, collaborators, and part of a shared creative community. From AJASS presentations and concerts to album cover photography for artists on Blue Note and beyond, image and sound have long been part of the same conversation.

I’m honored to see that conversation continue through Beauty in Bloom and Radiance, two new compositions by Brandee Younger created for the Black Is Beautiful Experience.

Arriving this July as a musical companion to Black Is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story.

In partnership with @blackarchives.co we’re continuing our Living Archive series with Kwame Brathwaite Jr. while delving into his role as the archival director of his father's collection.

During the 50s, 60s, and 70s, his father, Kwame Brathwaite Sr., captured the art and creative expression of the Black experience. Most notably known for his photography during the ‘Black is Beautiful’ movement in the 1960s, Braithwaite’s images continue to radiate a sense of culture and pride and will live on through the help of his son’s commitment to preserving his father’s legacy.
