As we celebrate Black Music Month, I’m reminded of the many musicians, artists, and creative visionaries who were part of the African Jazz-Art Society & Studios (AJASS).

Music and photography have always been connected in the curation of my father’s work. Many of the musicians he photographed were also friends, collaborators, and part of a shared creative community. From AJASS presentations and concerts to album cover photography for artists on Blue Note and beyond, image and sound have long been part of the same conversation.

I’m honored to see that conversation continue through Beauty in Bloom and Radiance, two new compositions by Brandee Younger created for the Black Is Beautiful Experience.

Arriving this July as a musical companion to Black Is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story.

Thank you @warriors & @valkyries for having us be a part of your Juneteenth float in San Francisco. The parade was amazing!

“Black Is Beautiful” wasn’t just a phrase — it was a movement. And it started with two brothers in Harlem.

Kwame Brathwaite Sr. and his brother Elombe Brath coined the phrase in the 1960s, and Kwame spent the next 70 years proving it with a camera — documenting everyday Black life, touring Africa with the Jackson 5, and photographing icons like Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

I had the honor of meeting his son, Kwame Brathwaite Jr., who’s been carrying the archive forward — and got to help bring two augmented reality exhibits to life: one at Eaton Hotel in DC, and another at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena.

Now there’s a documentary by Yemi Bamiro: *Black Is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story.* Featuring Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Gabrielle Union, and Jesse Williams — all collectors of his work.

Watch it. Share it. Pass it on. 🖤

We began this journey together and completed it as a team! A huge thank you to our family and friend @mendeljjames_21 for your constant support of The City Eats and for helping us find opportunities to succeed. We are incredibly grateful to @warriors, @goldenstate5k, and @chase_center for your belief in us! 🫡

Today was about community and health. We all were able to accomplish this run together as a team focusing on becoming the best versions of ourselves.

Thank you @projectyou_begins for creating such an incredible impact towards health and wellness for volunteers and members. Let’s keep this going!

This ain’t just about film—it’s about finding your voice, telling your truth, and turning vision into legacy. Grateful to help guide folks through the art of storytelling, one frame at a time. Dreams deserve to be seen and heard. @havasole @starrylemonlime

Lead, educate and inspire💫! An incredible opportunity by @havasole & @warriors for the Dream Out Loud film workshop. This was such an engaging and inspiring experience for our youth and young adults to learn about the film industry. We are grateful to be invited and add our good friends @bgcsf to the mix. We are ready for the next one.

Thank you @mendeljjames_21 @dubscommunity for allowing us to be part of this wonderful initiative!
