A very sunny Sunday this weekend spent doing what we do best - washing dishes and bin fairy-ing at Groove and Graze with Glen Eira City Council! 🌞

Come meet a few of our team, see how the community celebrated spring, and take a look at our reuse system in action.

Happy SIPtember to all who celebrate! STREAT’s annual campaign is all about boosting reusable uptake across Australia. It’s a privilige to be tackling waste alongside such vibrant, dedicated partners, from councils to social enterprises. 🌱 by @b_alternative

Rare blue skies all day at Creative Climate’s joyful Planting Party last weekend. Painting, weaving, talking, sharing, dancing, laughing and celebrating all the incredible community tree-planting days held across August. ALSO celebrating our very own @gretel_tobin’s beautiful ‘Plant (Paint) It and They Will Come’ workshop (and did you see all that incredible handmade signage at the start??) 🌻🦅🍃🎨 by @b_alternative

This week we reached an awesome milestone! The Melbourne Food Rescue Network has saved 5 tonnes of perfectly edible, nourishing and delicious produce from going to waste. Every single food item weighed and sorted to ensure everything is edible. Relationships built and food delivered to those who need it most.

And 5 tonnes is only the start 💫

The Melbourne Food Rescue Network is a collective effort, and just one of the initiatives happening at the @streatmelbourne led @purposeprecinct at the @vicmarket, in collaboration with @cityofmelbourne @secondbite and @b-alternative 💕 taken in Queen Victoria Market by @b_alternative

The Melbourne Food Rescue Network has now rescued and donated over 5 tonnes of fruits, vegetables and eggs to people in need. But there is a bit of a process before we deliver it to those in need.

Each food item (including each individual berry!) is hand sorted to ensure its quality, and abides by the City of Melbourne’s food safety standards. Here is a peak behind the crates of what the sorting team from @b_alternative and STREAT do to ensure all the food is safe for eating.

And we hope this is just the start.

City of Melbourne data shows that 47% of residents in the City of Melbourne reported food insecurity in 2025. Programs like this are essential in ensuring food that the city already has gets to individuals and families who really need it.

In just 17 operating days, we have collected 5 tonnes of fresh food that was once destined to go to waste. The produce might not look “supermarket ready”, be the “right colour” or may simply be under sold. The Melbourne Food Rescue Network sorts and provides produce to local charitable organisations so they can feed the communities they serve.

Connecting food traders with community organisations feels like a no-brainer, but it wouldn’t be possible without @cityofmelbourne who are supporting this project, and staff from @b_alternative, the @purposeprecinct and STREAT as well as our valued  volunteers to make sure that this work gets done. And @secondbiteorg as they coordinate deliveries.

This initiative also wouldn’t be possible without the 19 different traders at the @vicmarket who have been incredible in donation their surplus produce - they don’t want to see this produce go to waste either. Without their support and kindness, there would be no food to provide.

At the Melbourne Food Rescue Network hub at QVM, we’re busy rescuing tonnes of produce to get it to people that need it. And we get to see some unusual produce. Which can have us asking... what is this?

Do you know what these are? Let us know 🤔 taken in Queen Victoria Market by @b_alternative

Our last morning at Elim Beach this past May, playing with plastics and netting found during our week-long beach clean-up at Cape Bedford. This coastal clean-up is the key focus of our annual two-week Regeneration Trip to Far North Queensland, where our small team recovered 3000kgs of plastic this year.

Art-making from the colourful trash we collected along the way, while sharing stories, memories, hopes and reflections from the week been, was the perfect way to bring this trip to a close. It’s easy to feel despair when confronted by ecosystems under such immense pressure. But our vision for this trip has always been the same: to leave more energised, focussed, active and hopeful than before. by @b_alternative

From Food Rescue to frog rescue: our most unexpected rescued item yet!

At the Melbourne Food Rescue Network Hub at QVM @vicmarket we thought we were in the business of rescuing food. Turns out, we’re in wildlife rescue too!

While sorting through a delivery of tomatoes that had travelled all the way from Western Australia, our team made a surprising discovery: tucked among the produce was a tiny stowaway, a Motorbike Frog.

Native to south-west WA, Motorbike Frogs are known for their distinctive call, which sounds a bit like a motorbike changing gears, giving them their unusual name. They’re also known to be resourceful little travellers, occasionally hitching rides in fruit and vegetable shipments and turning up hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometres from home.

While Motorbike Frogs aren’t endangered and are quite common in south-west WA, this little one had clearly taken a wrong turn, swapping wetlands for a crate of tomatoes and travelling more than 3,000 kilometres before being discovered.

Needless to say, finding a frog among the tomatoes was not on our bingo card for the day.

After a brief flurry of excitement, we corralled it into an empty mini tomato container with some water and a lettuce leaf. We contacted Wildlife Victoria, who stepped in to safely collect our unexpected guest. Our frog has since found a new home with a registered local reptile and amphibian enthusiast, where it can be cared for appropriately.

The little traveller may have accidentally crossed the country, but thanks to a few caring people, its story has a happy ending! 🐸

Every day we’re focused on rescuing good food and making sure it reaches people who need it most. However, we were reminded that the supply chain can deliver all sorts of surprises. One moment you’re sorting tomatoes, the next you’re coordinating a cross-state frog rescue.

Food rescue. Wildlife rescue. We’re apparently doing both now! Food rescue remains our mission, but every now and then, a different kind of rescue finds us.

We are proud to collaborate on this with @cityofmelbourne taken in Queen Victoria Market by @b_alternative
