A peek into what the off-season looks like for us. Just a few bits and pieces to sort through…

We’re still taking donations before the festival season well and truly kicks off. Got unwanted camp gear gathering dust at home? You know who to send it to. DM to arrange a drop-off in Brunswick or Heidelberg.

Over 13 hectares of shellfish reef restored.
That’s something to celebrate! 🥳🌊

Across Port Phillip Bay and the Gippsland Lakes, reef restoration is bringing vital marine habitat back to life.

And the scale of the challenge is huge: shellfish reefs once covered up to 50% of Port Phillip Bay’s seafloor, while more than 95% of Victoria’s shellfish reefs have been lost.

Through #ShuckDontChuck, oyster, mussel and scallop shells are diverted from landfill and becoming part of a restoration cycle 🦪♻️ supporting the incredible work of @natureaus.

Less waste. More reef. More life below the surface.

Reaching 5 tonnes of rescued food called for a celebration 🎉

This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the 16 incredible Queen Victoria Market traders donating surplus food to the Melbourne Food Rescue Network. It was awesome to give something back to thsee traders who have given us produce that goes to local people in need.

To say thank you, our Rescue team along side Nikki from @vicmarket delivered special thank you boxes featuring food rescue updates and some delicious jams made from their rescued produce, created by our cook alongside students from RMIT in our Innovation Kitchen on site at the @purposeprecinct!

5 tonnes rescued and counting!

Did you know oysters are a nutritional POWERHOUSE!? 🦪💪

Oysters aren’t just good for our waterways, they pack a pretty impressive punch when it comes to nutritional value too.

If you’re not yet a convert to this tasty little ocean treat, here are a few reasons that might just change your mind…

High in ZINC
Oysters are one of the richest natural sources of zinc, supporting immune function, metabolism and healing.

Packed with high-quality, lean and complete PROTEIN
Containing all nine essential amino acids, while naturally low in fat and calories.

B12 RICH
Helping support healthy nerve function and red blood cell production.

A natural source of OMEGA-3s
Including EPA and DHA, which support heart and brain health.

Full of ANTIOXIDANTS too!
Including DHMBA, a naturally occurring antioxidant being studied for its potential protective effects.

Pretty impressive for one little shellfish 🦪

And the benefits don’t stop there. Oyster shells can be returned to the water to create habitat, help protect shorelines and support reef restoration ♻️

So next time you shuck, don’t chuck! #ShuckDontChuck

This week we reached an awesome milestone! The Melbourne Food Rescue Network has saved 5 tonnes of perfectly edible, nourishing and delicious produce from going to waste. Every single food item weighed and sorted to ensure everything is edible. Relationships built and food delivered to those who need it most.

And 5 tonnes is only the start 💫

The Melbourne Food Rescue Network is a collective effort, and just one of the initiatives happening at the @streatmelbourne led @purposeprecinct at the @vicmarket, in collaboration with @cityofmelbourne @secondbite and @b-alternative 💕

The Melbourne Food Rescue Network has now rescued and donated over 5 tonnes of fruits, vegetables and eggs to people in need. But there is a bit of a process before we deliver it to those in need.

Each food item (including each individual berry!) is hand sorted to ensure its quality, and abides by the City of Melbourne’s food safety standards. Here is a peak behind the crates of what the sorting team from @b_alternative and STREAT do to ensure all the food is safe for eating.

The Melbourne Food Rescue Network is part of @streatmelbourne work at @purposeprecinct at @vicmarket in collaboration with @cityofmelbourne with support from @secondbiteorg 💕

At the Melbourne Food Rescue Network hub at QVM, we’re busy rescuing tonnes of produce to get it to people that need it. And we get to see some unusual produce. Which can have us asking... what is this?

Do you know what these are? Let us know 🤔

From Food Rescue to frog rescue: our most unexpected rescued item yet!

At the Melbourne Food Rescue Network Hub at QVM @vicmarket we thought we were in the business of rescuing food. Turns out, we’re in wildlife rescue too!

While sorting through a delivery of tomatoes that had travelled all the way from Western Australia, our team made a surprising discovery: tucked among the produce was a tiny stowaway, a Motorbike Frog.

Native to south-west WA, Motorbike Frogs are known for their distinctive call, which sounds a bit like a motorbike changing gears, giving them their unusual name. They’re also known to be resourceful little travellers, occasionally hitching rides in fruit and vegetable shipments and turning up hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometres from home.

While Motorbike Frogs aren’t endangered and are quite common in south-west WA, this little one had clearly taken a wrong turn, swapping wetlands for a crate of tomatoes and travelling more than 3,000 kilometres before being discovered.

Needless to say, finding a frog among the tomatoes was not on our bingo card for the day.

After a brief flurry of excitement, we corralled it into an empty mini tomato container with some water and a lettuce leaf. We contacted Wildlife Victoria, who stepped in to safely collect our unexpected guest. Our frog has since found a new home with a registered local reptile and amphibian enthusiast, where it can be cared for appropriately.

The little traveller may have accidentally crossed the country, but thanks to a few caring people, its story has a happy ending! 🐸

Every day we’re focused on rescuing good food and making sure it reaches people who need it most. However, we were reminded that the supply chain can deliver all sorts of surprises. One moment you’re sorting tomatoes, the next you’re coordinating a cross-state frog rescue.

Food rescue. Wildlife rescue. We’re apparently doing both now! Food rescue remains our mission, but every now and then, a different kind of rescue finds us.

We are proud to collaborate on this with @cityofmelbourne

Yesterday’s oysters. Tomorrow’s reefs. 🦪🌊

This World Oyster Day, we’re celebrating the incredible oyster, a powerhouse of nutrition and a powerhouse for our oceans. Just one oyster can filter up to a bathtub of water each day, helping create cleaner water, while oyster reefs provide vital habitat for marine species.

Through Shuck Don’t Chuck, delivered in partnership with The Nature Conservancy (@nature_aus), recycled shells from more than 50 partner venues across Melbourne and the Bellarine have made their way back to the ocean, helping build more than 13 hectares of new shellfish reef habitat across Narrm Narrm (Port Phillip Bay) and the Gippsland Lakes on Gunaikurnai Country.

Thank you to all our partner venues for your ongoing support of this incredibly important program.

Happy World Oyster Day! 🦪

Slightly different from our regular shell recycling content but had to share this stunning footage from our SDC Project Manager @jenmmjames on her recent work trip to Queensland training and learning with @citizensofthereef when they were greeted by a curious Dwarf Minke Whale 🐋 🥹💙
It’s all connected though, every effort to protect and restore our reefs impacts the health of our oceans globally, sharing of knowledge and experience connecting with others is the answer to a sustainable future for planet earth 🌍♻️
