POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
On May 27th (my mama’s birthday) I had the honor of serving as the graduation keynote speaker for Delaware Tech’s Workforce Development and Community Education Graduation.

To say this was an honor doesn’t quite capture it. It was an opportunity to love on my mom a lil bit out loud. Her sacrifice, Her discipline … my becoming ☺️

When we first moved to Delaware, we didn’t have much of a support system, so my mom took me everywhere with her. I sat in the back of classrooms while she worked toward her GED. Years later, when she decided to pursue her associate degree one class at a time, I was still right there beside her. Straight from HS track practice, dinner in the car, then off to Del Tech’s writing center where she received support and I did my homework ( & sneaking on MySpace 😅).

Then came Upward Bound, Del Tech became part of my story too: summer programs, Saturday sessions, SAT prep, college tours, and opportunities that expanded my vision of what was possible.

In my keynote, I touched on three things that every graduate walking across that stage knows well: Sacrifice. Discipline. Becoming.

My mother modeled those lessons long before I understood them. Her sacrifice and discipline created pathways for my own becoming. So standing on that stage, on her birthday, speaking to graduates who have their own stories of perseverance, felt incredibly special.

Congratulations to every graduate. Your journey is proof that becoming isn’t one big moment, it’s a series of choices, sacrifices, and acts of faith that shape who you are over time. There’s not just one route, no perfect time, all of our journeys are our own.

Thank you, Delaware Tech, for this incredible honor and for being part of both my mother’s story and mine. 💙🎓

& shout out to @angelvict0r for capturing some of these moments. by @b_kapow

It’s never been about the title. It’s always been about learning, serving, impact, and evolution.

Yesterday, I walked across the stage and was publicly hooded as Dr. Brittany C. Powell. 🎓

However, inside of me, I walked with every version of myself that has been pruned, stretched, developed, and blossomed throughout this season.

In the last five years, not only did I earn my doctorate, but I partnered with community, built programs rooted in liberation and literacy, taught students, conducted research, created space, and learned what it truly means to live in purpose.

To the University of Delaware (@udelaware) — thank you for pruning me and teaching me that no challenge, obstacle, or chess move can outmatch God’s grace.

To Read & Represent (@readandrepresent )— thank you for proving to me that you really do have to be a villager to have a village. What started as an idea became a movement rooted in representation, literacy, joy, and communal care. Over 100 volunteers. Over 700 students. Countless stories changed.

To NOIR EDU (@noir.edu_ ) — thank you for pushing me beyond comfort and into calling. And to this community, thank you for allowing me to help create space for Black educators across Delaware to gather, be affirmed, be celebrated, and be poured back into. Community will always be part of the pedagogy.

To Delaware State University (@delstateuniv)— entering my first HBCU as an adjunct professor has been deeply affirming and full circle. There is something powerful about teaching in spaces built with us in mind.

To every version of Brittany that kept going when things felt uncertain, exhausting, overwhelming, or heavy… thank you. #GodDid

This degree belongs to every room, every student, every community member, every ancestor, every prayer, and every person who poured into me along the way, especially my mentor & chair @the_w_ , we did it!

Honored to be a part of the 3.1% of Black Women w/ PhDs thank you to the sisters that paved the way. @cohortsistas @blackwomenphds @donedisscoach @ourdoctoraljourney

H.A.G.S.— Dr. Powell ✨

The most intelligent people I know, never attended or graduated from college, yet the lessons they taught me are unmatched. They poured into and sacrificed for me to no end, as a result I am a firm advocate of not letting an institution or title define you - but am not ignorant to the language of opportunity. Graduating from the #1 Graduate school of education (#IvyLeagueMami) is without a doubt an accomplishment, a blessing, but it’s really a testament to my community. UBUNTU!
.
I am a 1st generation college student, 1st generation American Born, raised in a Single Parent Household. Incarcerated Father, High Financial Need & Black w/out apology. I was raised to believe that NONE of these truths were barriers, though a lot of articles I read in my studies speak to the exact opposite 🤷🏾‍♀️. It was engrained in me that GOD has the final say (Thanks, ma! ) & my journey continues to be a testimony that he does.
.
As an educator Its imperative to center your WHY! I learned that my why is ever evolving - the more I grow and experience the more it expands. It may have started with my family and teachers that poured into me. But it doesn’t end there. From tutoring in Easton, Starting institute for TFA in Camden/Philly. Planting roots in Newark, NJ (where 120+ pieces of my heart are breaking barriers and stirring things up). Back to serving In Philly/DE.
.
More than anything else I just want Black students to experience love & freedom in educational settings. I am a product of community & we did it, again 🎉.

The 2nd Annual #BlkEdSummit was a HUGE SUCCESS! 🔥🔥🔥

A SOLD OUT professional learning experience for educators, hosted right here in Wilmington, Delaware, and BABYYYYY THE VIBES WERE IMMACULATE! 🙌🏾

We LEARNED! We LAUGHED! We CRIED! We CONNECTED! We CELEBRATED! And most importantly, we REMEMBERED WHOSE WE ARE! 🖤

And a HUGEEEE shoutout to our phenomenal keynote speaker, Dr. Chris Emdin(@chrisemdin ), who brought the FIRE, challenged us to think deeper, reminded us of the power we hold as educators, and left us feeling SEEN, AFFIRMED, and READY to shake things up! 🔥🖤 THIS is what happens when brilliance meets purpose!

The room was INTERGENERATIONAL, filled with educators from across the ENTIRE state of Delaware, with MOST school districts represented! From aspiring educators to seasoned veterans, classroom teachers to educational leaders, we showed up, showed OUT, and poured into one another!

And THAT is what this is all about! Creating the spaces we need, having the conversations that matter, and building the community we deserve!

DELAWARE, LOOK WHAT WE DID! 🗣️🔥

To every speaker, attendee, partner, sponsor, volunteer, and person who believed in this vision — THANK YOUUUUU! You helped make this one for the BOOKS! 📚

TWO YEARS DOWN AND WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED! 🚀

📞 Y’ALL, I WENT TO THE MEETING FOR US… because I heard you couldn’t make it!

EPISODE 2: WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO ABOUT DELAWARES UNDERPERFORMING SCHOOLS?

Well, At the September Public Education Funding Commission (PFEC) meeting, Delaware’s Secretary of Education presented the “Delaware’s School Performance & Support Framework” a proposed framework outlining FIVE tiers of school support, accountability, and intervention.

The goal? To provide different levels of support based on schools’ needs and performance.

📣 NOW IT’S YOUR TURN!

The framework is still a DRAFT, and the Delaware Department of Education is seeking public feedback!

Whether you’re a teacher, student, parent, caregiver, school leader, or community member, this is an opportunity to learn more, ask questions, and share your perspective.

🔗 READ THE PROPOSAL & SUBMIT YOUR FEEDBACK! Link in bio.

Also anyone willing to be in conversation with me about what this means for Wilmington, reach out! Let’s chat!

Stay informed. Stay engaged. Make your voice heard! 💙💚

And don’t worry, I’ma call you back after the next one! 📞😂

REPRESENTATION, is so important! Sometimes you have to see it to believe you can be it. 👑📚

During OEA Reading Day, we had the honor of welcoming Miss Delaware Anaya Harrison to read with students at EastSide Charter School, a school she once attended herself!

Students didn’t just see Miss Delaware walk through their school in a crown and sash. They saw someone who once walked their same halls come back to sit with them, open a book, and model the joy and importance of reading.

That’s the power of representation.

In literacy, representation allows children to see themselves in the stories they read. In education, it allows them to see themselves in the people teaching, leading, creating, and pouring into them. And beyond the classroom, it can expand their imagination of who they can become.

Thank You Anaya For Your Yes & Your Commitment to Community🎥👑

Black Educators’ Summit 2026
 Remembering whose we are.

Yesterday, Black educators, leaders, and community gathered in Wilmington for the 2026 BlkEd Summit at The Mill.

An intergenerational conversation about education, legacy, identity, and the responsibility of carrying something forward.

Because this work did not begin with us.

We inherited classrooms, institutions, stories, sacrifices, and dreams. Now we decide what gets preserved, what gets challenged, and what gets passed on.

This is what community looks like when we remember that education is bigger than a profession. It is lineage.

Proud to have documented a piece of it. taken in The Mill Space by @b_kapow

It takes a village to teach a child. 📚🤎

And here in Wilmington, we believe the whole city has a role to play.

Literacy doesn’t only live inside classrooms. It lives in our homes, libraries, community centers, barbershops, front porches, parks and anywhere a child has someone willing to open a book and read alongside them.

As we close out National Literacy Month, the challenge doesn’t end here.

📖 Pick up a book.
🤎 Read with a child.
🗣️ Share a story.
✨ Help a young person discover the power of their own voice.

At home. In the streets. Wherever you are.

Follow @officeofeducationaladvocacy to stay in the loop!

Wilmington, let’s keep reading. 📚

A huge thank you to @eastsidecharter x @dr.abeezy , for always opening your doors to community!
