POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

If I could dedicate this article to anyone, it would be my dad, George Latimer, who died in 2020. He is the reason that my love of the arts, especially opera, is so profound -- the reason this article was even possible (link in bio).

Thanks, dad, and thank you to my great editor at @parterrebox, @harryrose670, as well as my friends and peer readers @big.rich.cookieboy @eoconn36 and, as always, @sophieziner.

If you've never heard of Sherrill Milnes, you're in for a treat. Thank you, Sherrill and Maria, for letting me tell your story.

Check out their great festival, @savannahvoicefestival, if you're in the area!

Photo dump: day 1+2 of Mexico City. Charmed by Chapultepec, awed by Teotihuacan. And above all, grateful to have a mom who's fun as hell to travel with. Big thanks to Diego and his wife for hosting us. More pics coming for food, flora, and urbanism 😋

TOMORROW NIGHT: I'm facilitating the first of two public events about Newark's Transit Village Designation. This morning I briefed Newark City Council about these plans. For more, check out this exchange between Councilman Ramos and myself (link to full presentation in bio, starting at 17:20). We look forward to seeing and hearing you tomorrow night and Saturday morning. Light refreshments will be served. #TransitVillage #transit #walkability #urbanism #NewarkForward #newark #urbanplanning taken in City of Newark, NJ - City Hall by @b_lat_

In #Guayaquil, people buy and sell papier mache manikins and light them on fire at midnight on New Years'. This signifies a cleansing of the year, a purification, renewal. Sort of. It's also just people blowing shit up in public. I threw a bag of fireworks into the bonfire shown here and it was everything you could imagine that being like. My top 10 books of 2018. While I thoroughly enjoyed each, I can say that, without hyperbole, two of them changed my life: "How We Die: Reflections on Life's Final Chapter", by Sherwin Nuland, and "When Breath Becomes Air", by Paul Kalanithi. Both impart the fragility of life, pierce the surface of death, depict intimate and ultimate acts of courage and bravery. I take them with me into 2019. #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bestof2018 by @b_lat_
