In times of war, systematic violence, and destruction, how do we navigate ourselves through the necropolitics and find ways to cultivate a culture of vitality?
This workshop examines how systems of violence and oppression register in the somatic body, and explores possible practices of repair through embodied listening.

🫧
The workshop will run for 1,5 hours, followed by a relaxing break with vegan food and refreshments. Afterwards, we’ll continue with a explorative reading session, sharing reflections and moving through different theoretical references and writings from selected authors, as a way to elaborate a critical, creative discourse.

To participate, we kindly request a donation of 20 euro.
To register please send us an email at: etherosonic@gmail.com

The workshop is developed as part of the Cosmopoetic Studio, an explorative series of gatherings focusing on poetic knowledge and cosmopoetic imagination.

For Brandon LaBelle @b_llabelle , listening is never only about sound. It shapes how we recognise one another, how we live with disagreement and tension, and how we make space for other voices and experiences.

In Poetics of Listening, Brandon approaches listening as a practice of relation — one that can move us from separation towards interdependence, and from the pressure to constantly produce towards a greater capacity to receive.

The presentation brings together theoretical perspectives and examples from The Listening Biennial, which Brandon initiated in 2021 around the idea of “curatorial affection”: creating and holding space for others, with poetic practice understood as a possible form of radical hospitality.

Artist, writer and theorist, Brandon has been working across sound, publishing and collaborative practices for decades. He is the artistic director of The Listening Biennial and founder of Errant Bodies Press, the independent publishing project he started in 1995 around sound art, performance, poetics and artistic research.

Among the trees, hammocks, and an audience scattered throughout the park, Brandon LaBelle presented a performance as part of the Biuro Dźwięku Katowice programme.

An artist, writer, and theorist, LaBelle has long explored listening, co-presence, and the ways relationships are formed. Here, the park was not simply a backdrop for the performance – it became part of a situation in which sound, space, and the presence of listeners came together beyond the conventional concert format.

LaBelle is also part of the international research project “Listening as Method”, developed in collaboration with Sanatorium Dźwięku.

Twórczość Brandona LaBelle’a koncentruje się wokół pytań o wspólnotowość, sprawczość i poetykę codziennych relacji. W swoich projektach wykorzystuje performans, instalację, teatr poetycki i sytuacje współtwórcze, badając możliwości budowania wspólnoty poprzez dźwięk, język i obecność. Interesują go sposoby organizowania doświadczenia poprzez współobecność, gościnność i kolektywne działanie, a także tworzenie relacji wykraczających poza ustalone ramy instytucjonalne.

Jest autorem książek poświęconych kulturze dźwięku i praktykom słuchania, m.in. Poetics of Listening, Acoustic Justice, Sonic Agency, Lexicon of the Mouth, Acoustic Territories i Background Noise, a także założycielem wydawnictwa Errant Bodies Press. Inicjuje i współtworzy międzynarodowe projekty artystyczne i badawcze, takie jak The Listening Biennial i Listening Academy, a obecnie uczestniczy również w projekcie MUTE (Soundscapes of Trauma: Music, Sound, and the Ethics of Witnessing). Współtworzy także projekt Listening as Method, realizowany we współpracy z Sanatorium Dźwięku, którego kolejne działania będą rozwijane również podczas edycji festiwalu w 2027 roku.

Projekt Listening as Method realizowany jest przez Fundację Sztuki Współczesnej In Situ (Polska) we współpracy z Ferst Dadler z.s. (Czechy) oraz Sonoscopia Associação Cultural (Portugalia). Projekt jest współfinansowany przez Unię Europejską w ramach programu Creative Europe.

Departing from our recent opening of the Cosmopoetic Studio in Berlin, we're excited to continue the activities and research in Cairo, in collaboration with Sonic Spaces - we welcome letters of interest and look forward to gathering together around cosmopoetic forms of sounding ⚡

Following sound as animate force, and what supports a culture of life, the Academy opens a collaborative framework for investigating sound as a practice of vitality. Through creative, critical discussions and collective material investigations, we’ll bring sound to life, following it as a means for challenging the prevailing logic of “necropower” today. As Achille Mbembe argues, an “ideology of death” defines much of the political world, where exclusion, discrimination, violence and war are normalized. Against such a logic, we’ll listen into and with sound as a Cosmopoetic Being whose vibratory, resonant, and noisy nature emerges as a carrier of vitality: as what animates and holds stories of resistance, communal bonds, struggles for freedom and embodied memory. By way of such a focus, sound is considered an important contribution to wielding what Amitav Ghosh calls a “vitalist politics” in support of life. While sound may certainly harm and hurt, we’ll attend to it as a force of vitality, one that can teach of the cosmic thunders, the social currents, and the radical sympathies shaping relations.
