SOMA OF THE TREE • Rituals of Repair A few impressions from our workshop, presented as part of DYSTOPIA Sound Art Biennial 2026 at HAUNT, Berlin. An exploration of sound, scent and embodied ways of knowing and relating to the more-than-human world, activating @b_llabelle’s Meditation on X (a cosmic sense of life). Deep gratitude to everyone who joined us with curiosity, openness and care. Heartfelt thanks to @b_llabelle, @dystopiabiennial and @haunt_berlin for making this encounter possible and to my dear Amelie @burgund_t_brandt for bringing her beautiful sonic sensibility and resonances into our shared listening experience. And a special thank you to Alice @wondylens for beautifully capturing the atmosphere and moments of our shared experience through her photography. SOUND & SCENT | Embodied Ways of Knowing What can trees teach us about memory, interconnectedness and repair? Through sound, resonance and the scent of burning tree resins, we explored how landscapes carry stories beyond the visible. Sound and scent evoke different layers of embodied memory, where perception, place and time intertwine, sometimes before words can take shape. SENSING | Remembering our Relations Inspired by the Japanese tradition of Mon-kō: listening to scent, we explored smelling as a form of deep listening. Through moments of stillness, scent walks and sensory exploration, we opened a space to attune to the rhythms and relationships of the living world. An invitation to sense beyond the familiar and reconsider our place within the ecological cycles we are part of. TREE RESINS | Ecological Memory Tree resins carry traces of time, protection, wounds and regeneration: Living archives of ecological memory. Through scent, smoke and embodied encounters, we explored how these material traces connect bodies, landscapes and histories. SCENT OBJECTS | Archives of Place Rooted in my long-standing practice with tree resins and locally gathered plants, scent objects took shape from resins, dried herbs and botanicals. Like resin, scent can become an archive of ecological memory, preserving sensory traces of landscapes whose rhythms are increasingly disrupted, and whose familiar scent

submitted my doctoral thesis ~ The Art of Listening My research explored how listening could function as a techno-social critique, resisting the disembodying tendencies of contemporary technology, not by rejecting it, but by reconfiguring the relationship between body, technology, and perception through design. Throughout the years, I developed a range of instruments and sonic artefacts to engage with listening as a counter-practice within the context of digitalisation and the attention economy where stillness and attention become acts of resilience. Along the way, I had the joy of collaborating with and learning from talented artists and makers, theatre maker @sofiekramer_performance Sofie Kramer and architect @fenderwall Iris van der Wal, whose contributions helped my artistic practice expand beyond sound and music. Very grateful for the conversations with @b_llabelle Brandon LaBelle and participating in the Listening Academy deeply enriched my work. I am especially grateful to my supervisor and mentor, Jessica Hemmings, whose thoughtful remarks and support enabled me to work at my best. Many thanks to @zsuzsanna Zsuzsanna Koos for her super thorough editorial and translation work bringing the thesis to its final form. and thanks to @mome_budapest for giving me this opportunity amazing cover photo by @sandervanwettum next up: the defence With deep appreciation for the people I have met and the exchanges that have shaped this journey.

𝑺𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒐𝒔𝒎𝒐𝒑𝒐𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑹𝒉𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒎𝒔: 𝑻𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑻𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑩𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏 𝑳𝒂𝑩𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆 We’re very excited to welcome Brandon LaBelle to Sonic Territories for the 𝘓𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺: 𝘈𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘴 Public Listening Session at Seestadt Studios. How are individuals and communities situated within time? What does it mean to be on time, or to keep time? And which time signatures dominate to define the movements and rhythms of society? The session brings critical and creative attention to time and struggles for “temporal agency.” Taking stock of theories and practices of time, we’ll develop strategies for listening to the rhythms of a chronopolitical reality, from the rhythms of social life to the ways in which time is weaponised in practices of detention. The workshop also reflects on how time is racialised, gendered, or politicised to act as a carrier of dominant belief systems. Moving against these dominant and defining time signatures, we’ll work on mapping a set of counter-times or cosmopoetic rhythms: rhythms and timings articulated so as to support ways of holding or inhabiting time differently. 𝑩𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏 𝑳𝒂𝑩𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆 (𝑼𝑺/𝑫𝑬) Brandon LaBelle is an artist, writer, theorist, and artistic director of The Listening Biennial. His work focuses on questions of agency, community, pirate culture, and poetics, resulting in a range of collaborative and extra-institutional initiatives. In 1995 he founded Errant Bodies Press, an independent publishing project supporting work in sound art and studies, performance and poetics, artistic research and contemporary political thought. 24 October, 2pm–5pm Seestadt Studios Free admission. Capacity is limited, and advance registration here: https://kupfticket.com/en/events/2410-publiclisteningsession  The session will be held in English. Please plan to participate for the full duration. In cooperation with University of Applied Arts Vienna. Kindly supported by Hotel Dormero.

🫧 In times of war, systematic violence, and destruction, how do we navigate ourselves through the necropolitics and find ways to cultivate a culture of vitality? This workshop examines how systems of violence and oppression register in the somatic body, and explores possible practices of repair through embodied listening. Drawing on cosmopoetics as a relational practice, an art of feeling, sensing, and world-building, the workshop approaches the poetic as a method of care. Through poetic practices of inner attunement, grounded in Reiki bodywork and spiritual activism, we explore how listening can become a practice of repair, connection, and vitality. 🫧 The workshop will run for 1,5 hours, followed by a relaxing break with vegan food and refreshments. Afterwards, we’ll continue with a explorative reading session, sharing reflections and moving through different theoretical references and writings from selected authors, as a way to elaborate a critical, creative discourse. To participate, we kindly request a donation of 20 euro. To register please send us an email at: etherosonic@gmail.com The workshop is developed as part of the Cosmopoetic Studio, an explorative series of gatherings focusing on poetic knowledge and cosmopoetic imagination. 🫧 ( ether o ) Chia-Liang Lai is an interdisciplinary artist with a background in sculpture. Drawing on the concept of sculptural time, they work across a range of time-based media, including sound, video, performance, and installation. Their performance practice has evolved into an ongoing embodied research that extends into Reiki bodywork and holistic healing rooted in spiritual activism. Their work centers on sound and listening as methods for exploring embodied storytelling and worldbuilding. They were born and grew up in Taipei, currently live and work in Berlin. 🫧 Saturday, October 3rd / 14:00 - 17:30 Location: Cosmopoetic Studio / The Listening Biennial @listeningbiennial Lettestrasse 7, 10437 Berlin - 3rd floor #listeningbiennial

Cosmopoetics – practices of vitality The Listening Academy - Online course with Brandon LaBelle November 2, 9, 16, 23, 2026 / 14:00 - 16:00 CET @listeningbiennial @b_llabelle Extending from our recent work on poetic knowledge and Cosmopoetic Sound, the course sets out to present and elaborate the topic of Cosmopoetics as a world-creating approach centered on vitality, animacy, and a culture of life. Importantly, cosmopoetics is emphasized as the articulation of a cosmology of connection, one that shifts from a logic of separation underpinning traditions of scientific objectivity and toward a poetic ecology of shared vitality. Cosmopoetics is a critical, creative framework for nurturing ecological compassion and human and more-than-human affiliations; it opens onto radical forms of participation and the capacity to sense the interconnectedness of things, lending to what Ailton Krenak terms a “cosmic sense of life” – and which emerges as a refusal of dominant structures of enclosure, extraction, violence. We’re interested in exploring cosmopoetics as a pronounced form of relational responsibility or cosmic form of listening, which can enliven our critical, creative practices with a festivity of imagination: to synchronize with the rhythms of a natural bond – finding ways to perform as “caretakers of the cosmos”. Apply: We welcome letters of interest from researchers, organizers, practitioners, and educators curious to investigate cosmopoetic methodologies and perspectives. The course is limited to 30 participants. We kindly request a fee of 100 euros for attending the course, with a reduced rate of 85 euros for students. We also offer a few places for those without financial resources. Please send letters sharing details on your interest in the topic, along with a short CV, by September 29, 2026; questions or inquiries can also be addressed to listeningaca@gmail.com More information here: https://listeningbiennial.net/articles/cosmopoetics-online

For Brandon LaBelle @b_llabelle , listening is never only about sound. It shapes how we recognise one another, how we live with disagreement and tension, and how we make space for other voices and experiences. In Poetics of Listening, Brandon approaches listening as a practice of relation — one that can move us from separation towards interdependence, and from the pressure to constantly produce towards a greater capacity to receive. The presentation brings together theoretical perspectives and examples from The Listening Biennial, which Brandon initiated in 2021 around the idea of “curatorial affection”: creating and holding space for others, with poetic practice understood as a possible form of radical hospitality. Artist, writer and theorist, Brandon has been working across sound, publishing and collaborative practices for decades. He is the artistic director of The Listening Biennial and founder of Errant Bodies Press, the independent publishing project he started in 1995 around sound art, performance, poetics and artistic research. How do you keep an independent platform alive for 25 years? It’s not very often that, in one weekend in Timișoara, you get nine different perspectives on what happens around experimental music and sound. If music matters to you beyond the moment it comes out of the speakers, come a little earlier to MX. From 25–27 September, nine presentations and listening sessions bring some of these histories, practices and infrastructures into the same room. All of them are free to attend. FRI 25 SEPT > Felix Petrescu of @makunouchibento takes us back to the age of netlabels and a more utopian internet; > #dieb13 tells the story of 25 years of klingt.org; > Anamaria Pravicencu @anamaria_pravicencu marks 10 years of @semi_silent through radio, voice and listening. SAT 26 SEPT > Erik Bünger follows the strange authority of the disembodied voice; > Takuro Mizuta Lippit @dj_sniff traces an unexpected history connecting wartime radio, bomber-engine recordings and turntable culture; > Didier Aschour opens up the inner workings of @gmea_albi and the infrastructures experimental music needs to exist. SUN 27 SEPT > Elena Dobîndă & Emilian Mărgărit dig into archives and overlooked sound collections of @spatiul.offbeat; > Brandon LaBelle @b_llabelle discusses listening as a social and political practice; > Kasper T. Toeplitz presents Art Zoyd Studios @artzoydstudios and the challenges of keeping electronic works alive as their technologies disappear. 🙌 Come for the subject that catches you. Stay for the next one. 25–27 SEPT / MX – Corneliu Mikloși Museum SIMULTAN FESTIVAL XXI is funded and organised in partnership with the Municipality of Timișoara through @centruldeproiecte #simultanfestival
