When @baad_studio - helmed by husband and wife Ar. @benjmendoza and Ar. @ansbermejo - designed the DL House, they wanted a structure that not only took into account their client’s personality but they wanted one that had an affordance to the environment where it sits. Situated by a busy thoroughfare that can get quite loud, plant walls were erected to muffle the noise and provide privacy. With many typhoons hitting the Philippines yearly - with strong winds that can go as fast as 200 kph - BAAD Studios looked to the @orama_philippines window system. The Orama window system has a sleek and minimal frame and track system that blurs the line between indoors and outdoors. The Glulam House is a collaborative effort and major step forward towards a high sustainability living in the Philippines. With a complete structural framing in glued laminated timber, the environmental impact of the (production, construction and lifespan) of this house is a small fraction compared to using conventional reinforced concrete and steel. “GUNITA” Remembering An installation by BAADxFormwerkz GUNITA is a contemporary installation inspired by the capiz windows of Philippines’ colonial homes. Through repetition, translucency, and light, capiz shells are reinterpreted as architectural fragments and expressions of Material Memory. Capiz is a material rooted in the maritime landscape of *Southeast Asia*. In the Philippines, it became closely associated with traditional architecture, particularly the translucent windows of _bahay na bato_. In this installation, the capiz shell is removed from its traditional architectural context and transformed into a luminous sculptural element. Thousands of individual shells form a unified composition, reflecting the relationship between material, craft, architecture, and place. The shell remembers the sea. The window remembers the house. The light remembers the climate. And the craft remembers the hands that made it. Benjee Mendoza is the founding partner of BAAD Studio, a Philippine architecture and design practice established in 2010. A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas, Mendoza’s practice spans architecture, interior architecture, community design, and physical planning, with an interest in developing contemporary responses that remain grounded in their local contexts. His work explores the relationship between atmosphere, materiality, ecology, and human experience, challenging conventional approaches to how architecture can engage both people and place. BAAD Studio’s projects have received recognition locally and internationally, including the Tree-Line House, which received the 2018 MADE Architecture Award for Best Residential Design, and the Sunken Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, which was highly commended at the 2018 World Architecture Festival.
