For over three decades, Aotearoa / New Zealand based sound artist and composer Rachel Shearer has researched and engaged with a wide range of Māori and Western practices in listening to the Earth. On the first full length album released under her name, Te Oro o te Ao (the resounding of the world) Shearer has created a bold work of sonic dreaming and remembrance. A personal realization channeled through the Māori concept of whakapapa; embracing the belief that the whole of creation, past/present/future is a dynamic interconnected movement. With field recordings, electronics, and voice, Shearer creates immersive analogs of earthly processes that move like tumbling avalanches and crashing waves. Subterranean volcanic activity transmutes into super-heated air rising into frequencies beyond human hearing. Shearer posits that consciousness, like the environment, is not a closed system; that the mind is an ecosystem where our thoughts are the ‘flora’ and ‘fauna’ and the perception of sound vibrations in the material world is a gateway to metaphysical realms.

Ecco the Dolphin is a project by musician, Deep Listener, and artist Abby Dahlquist. Dahlquist began working under the name Ecco the Dolphin to express resistance and earth consciousness through peaceful listening. Ecco explores the human-nature relationship through multimedia presentations that evoke the memory of home recorded new age ambient cassettes found in thrift stores on long drives up and down the pacific coast highway and Audrey Horne’s foray into environmental activism. Holding a certificate from Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening Institute, Dahlquist regularly facilitates workshops and has lectured at Philosophical Research Society and Shelterfest in Olympia, Wa. taken in 2220 Arts + Archives by @babeoftheabbyss

Saturday September 19! Join certified practitioner Abby Dahlquist for this workshop exploring Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening practice and philosophies!

Dahlquist will guide us through the process and teach us how to bring our awareness to the natural music of the world around us.

Deep Listening explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the conscious nature of listening. Oliveros developed a practice which includes bodywork, sonic meditations, and interactive performance, as well as listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, one’s own thoughts, imagination, and dreams. It cultivates a heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and promotes experimentation, improvisation, collaboration, playfulness, and other creative skills vital to personal and community growth.

Inherently collaborative, the first published Deep Listening scores and activities (Sonic Meditations, 1971) were workshopped in the context of a female-identified collective, the fem-ensemble, over a period of many months. From the 1980s onwards, Deep Listening workshops, retreats, and the Deep Listening Certification Program were developed and facilitated in close partnership with playwright IONE (also Oliveros’ life partner) and movement artist Heloise Gold. Today, the philosophy and practice of Deep Listening continues to evolve through a growing international community of listeners.

This 90 minute workshop – led by Certified Deep Listening facilitator Abby Dahlquist invites participants to explore Oliveros’ Deep Listening® practice in community. Participants will be guided through a series of exercises that involve meditation, movement, sounding, improvising, and dreaming to explore the sonic environment, both internal and external. This practice is offered as a gateway to creative fields in the space/time continuum.

Excerpts from a zine I made for the February Deep Listening workshop at PRS. The theme was the heart and love. We generated a melody from a recording of my heart beat Milford Graves style and everyone translated their own heart sounds from their own sound processing computers, their bodies! We sounded a heart chorus and extended the possibility of unconditional love around the world. May all beings be free 💗 by @babeoftheabbyss
