Wed. Sept 30th @2220arts - A night of deep listening and sound art excursions with New Zealand /  Aotearoa sound artist and composer Rachel Shearer and Abby Dahlquist’s Ecco the Dolphin! The concert will celebrate the release of Shearer’s new LP “Te Oro o te Ao” on Thin Wrist Recordings. ✨Concert Ticket & Album Pre-Order links are in our bio✨ For over three decades, Aotearoa / New Zealand based sound artist and composer Rachel Shearer has researched and engaged with a wide range of Māori and Western practices in listening to the Earth. On the first full length album released under her name, Te Oro o te Ao (the resounding of the world) Shearer has created a bold work of sonic dreaming and remembrance. A personal realization channeled through the Māori concept of whakapapa; embracing the belief that the whole of creation, past/present/future is a dynamic interconnected movement. With field recordings, electronics, and voice, Shearer creates immersive analogs of earthly processes that move like tumbling avalanches and crashing waves. Subterranean volcanic activity transmutes into super-heated air rising into frequencies beyond human hearing. Shearer posits that consciousness, like the environment, is not a closed system; that the mind is an ecosystem where our thoughts are the ‘flora’ and ‘fauna’ and the perception of sound vibrations in the material world is a gateway to metaphysical realms. Ecco the Dolphin is a project by musician, Deep Listener, and artist Abby Dahlquist. Dahlquist began working under the name Ecco the Dolphin to express resistance and earth consciousness through peaceful listening. Ecco explores the human-nature relationship through multimedia presentations that evoke the memory of home recorded new age ambient cassettes found in thrift stores on long drives up and down the pacific coast highway and Audrey Horne’s foray into environmental activism. Holding a certificate from Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening Institute, Dahlquist regularly facilitates workshops and has lectured at Philosophical Research Society and Shelterfest in Olympia, Wa.

Saturday September 19! Join certified practitioner Abby Dahlquist for this workshop exploring Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening practice and philosophies! Dahlquist will guide us through the process and teach us how to bring our awareness to the natural music of the world around us. Deep Listening explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the conscious nature of listening. Oliveros developed a practice which includes bodywork, sonic meditations, and interactive performance, as well as listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, one’s own thoughts, imagination, and dreams. It cultivates a heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and promotes experimentation, improvisation, collaboration, playfulness, and other creative skills vital to personal and community growth. Inherently collaborative, the first published Deep Listening scores and activities (Sonic Meditations, 1971) were workshopped in the context of a female-identified collective, the fem-ensemble, over a period of many months. From the 1980s onwards, Deep Listening workshops, retreats, and the Deep Listening Certification Program were developed and facilitated in close partnership with playwright IONE (also Oliveros’ life partner) and movement artist Heloise Gold. Today, the philosophy and practice of Deep Listening continues to evolve through a growing international community of listeners. This 90 minute workshop – led by Certified Deep Listening facilitator Abby Dahlquist invites participants to explore Oliveros’ Deep Listening® practice in community. Participants will be guided through a series of exercises that involve meditation, movement, sounding, improvising, and dreaming to explore the sonic environment, both internal and external. This practice is offered as a gateway to creative fields in the space/time continuum. Register now at prs.org/events✨

This is the *Hottest Of All Bills* it’s inconceivable that there’ll be a hotter happening anywhere in this cursed hemisphere on Thur 9/3 Brown + Rogue (@fancyfeces @lynyrd.squidward ) Debut of this duo which formed when Mitch saw Sam play at this very spot. Two of the apex masters of the modular madness that’s one of the strong suits of LA music rn. Mitch’s conditions in agreeing to the show were that I betray my (noble) ideological misgivings about PA’s (a clear force for the bourgeois cultural flattening that the Mexican Marxists call “blanquitud”) so I gleefully spinelessly folded and we got a PA ty Greg Hostile Architecture (@janethousden @wilddonlewis ) Their set at the 2 Year PT bday show sits in my mental hall of fame of best sets I ever seen here. It’s perfect music it makes you feel awake twice over makes you feel like you been fasting for days. Maybe you saw Don’s divine solo bass set here last year or Janet’s with Dave Arnson or maybe you’ve seen her playing Irish violin in the park or remember her as the early drummer of Redd Kross. These are True Rippers they know how to get it Ecco the Dolphin (@babeoftheabbyss ) Abby’s got that rarest/least bullshittable of artistic gifts of being able to create fully in/for/with the Situation she’s in. Everything to say and nothing to prove. I first saw her in the Graffiti Phallico duo and they cooked up this serene, long-form deep listening music and then killed it after like 6 min and just stopped. It was sensational I was taking notes. Now she’s one of the first people that comes to mind when I need an act or a collaborator. Dono what this project sounds like but I know I love it hans f. wagner (@meadow_lair ) another gripping mystery no idea what the music is but I DO know I love this guy’s brain and I love its constructive powers. You’ve read the poems you’ve seen the paintings and if you’re really fucking lucky— or if you come to this show which amounts to the same thing— you can say you seen him turn a 20 min live set inside out (or right side in as you will henceforth have to think of it) DJ’ing is the one and only @gro_opp Primetime Pub Thurs. Sep 3 7pm Flyer by @supply.janitrix !
