Three Bulgarian split squats. Three different training demands.

Small changes to the loading strategy can meaningfully change the mechanical demands of the same exercise.

Bilateral loading

Equal loading on both sides allows us to use more total load while maintaining the unilateral nature of the movement.

This makes it useful when we want to place a greater loading stimulus through the legs. Of these three variations, I'd probably favour it most for hypertrophy, although it wouldn't be my first choice if hypertrophy was the primary goal.

Ipsilateral loading

The load is positioned on the same side as the planted leg, increasing the demand to control the pelvis and trunk in the frontal plane.

This can be useful when we specifically want to challenge frontal-plane control while still allowing a meaningful external load.

Contralateral loading

The load is positioned on the opposite side to the planted leg, creating a different lateral-flexion demand through the trunk and changing the balance requirements of the movement.

This can be useful when we want to challenge trunk control without necessarily creating the same stability demands as the ipsilateral variation.

None of these variations is inherently better.

They're simply different tools for creating different training demands.

The skill of programming isn't blindly following a recipe or finding the “hardest” variation.

It's knowing which tool your athlete needs — and making deliberate changes that move them towards their goal. by @back2health360

When training, I've fallen into the trap of always trying to raise the ceiling of my lifts.

Push the intensity. Work close to failure. Demand strength adaptations from the body.

But preparing for this event, maximal deadlift strength isn't my limiting factor.

So rather than trying to raise the ceiling, I'm working on raising the floor.

That means consistent exposure to submaximal weights while refining the weak points in my lift — particularly my starting position and leg drive off the floor.

The goal isn't to see how heavy I can pull every session.

It's to make my 200 kg feel more like an easy 200 kg, while gradually building the foundation that will eventually allow me to pull more.

This approach also comes with a lower fatigue cost, allowing me to put more recovery into the events that actually need it for this competition.

There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Strength development doesn't always have to come from lifting the heaviest weights you can. by @back2health360

13 years married today ❤️

Thirteen years ago, we started this journey as a couple of kids with absolutely no idea what we were signing up for, but we knew we were signing up to do it together.

We’ve built a marriage, a family, a business and an entire life together. It hasn’t always been easy or simple, but being in it together has made the hard things feel easier and the complicated things feel simpler.

No matter how heavy life gets, you always find a way to carry us on those giant shoulders of yours.

Sometimes metaphorically. Often literally. Never wavering.

Happy anniversary Trev, I love being on your team ❤️

Most people think the backbend is the hard part, it's not.

The hard part is slowing down enough to prepare for it.

Today we spent most of our class opening our shoulders, hips and spine, learning about the Yamas and Niyamas, and getting our bodies ready before we even attempted a deep backbend.

It's easy to want to skip straight to the "cool" part, but that's where injuries happen.

The best backbends aren't forced, they're prepared.

I think that's a pretty good lesson for yoga... and for life too. 💚

Turns out years of studying how the human body moves comes in handy when you decide to carry ridiculously heavy things across a beach. 😂

This weekend Trevor swapped the clinic for the sand and competed in his first Strongman competition in quite a while.

🥈 2nd Overall
🥇 1st – 120kg Sandbag Carry
🥈 2nd – 120kg Sandbag Over 1.2m
🥈 2nd – Boat Pull

Watching this prep unfold over the last 12 weeks has been pretty special.

I've watched the early mornings, the long days in the clinic followed by training, the mobility work, the wins, the frustrating sessions, the breakthroughs, and the discipline it took to get leaner while somehow getting stronger at the same time.

What I'm most proud of isn't the podium finish.

It's seeing him fall back in love with the process.

As a chiropractor, Trevor spends every day helping people move better, trust their bodies again and build strength for life.

Seeing him put those same principles into practice himself has been pretty cool to watch.

Move better.
Get stronger.
Trust the process.

Now... apparently we start all over again, because there's another competition in October. 😂💪

Congratulations, Trev. We're proud of you. ❤️

12 weeks.

Hundreds of sets.
Thousands of reps.
Early mornings.
Late nights after a full day in the clinic.
Sessions where everything clicked.
Sessions where nothing did.

Tomorrow, it's time to see what all that work has built.

I'll be competing at Strand Park Beach from 10:00am, and I'm genuinely excited to get back on the competition floor.

Events:
💪 120kg Sandbag Carry – Max Distance in 30 seconds
💪 120kg Sandbag Over 1.2m Yoke – AMRAP in 1 minute
💪 Mystery Event

This prep has been about much more than one competition. It's been about becoming a better athlete, refining technique, improving work capacity, getting leaner while staying strong, and rediscovering how much I love the process of training.

No matter what happens tomorrow, that alone makes this prep a success.

If you're around Townsville, come down to Strand Park Beach, say hello and cheer on all the competitors. Strongman is an incredible community and we'd love to see you there.

Let's have some fun. 💪 by @back2health360

Dr Trevor is used to lifting heavy things… and I have made the executive decision that touching his toes also needs to be part of the program 🧘‍♂️

Strength is important.
Power is important.

But so is mobility, recovery, control and actually being able to move the body you’re building, or just... move as a concept

✨ Term 2 done ✨

Every class is a little bit different. Sometimes we nail the yoga poses, sometimes we spend half the class laughing, sometimes the biggest win is a shy little yogi joining in for the first time 🥹

This term has been full of games, crafts, creativity, big imaginations and lots of growing confidence 🌈

Thank you to all the families who bring their kids along and trust me to be part of their week. Watching these little humans learn, play and grow has been such a joy 💕

Term 2 is officially complete… and I’ve got lots more fun planned for our next adventures 🧘‍♀️✨
