For 34 years, Backcountry Magazine’s Gear Guide has helped skiers and riders prepare for the season ahead. That means decades of experience, and years spent refining how we test and review gear. Our values haven’t changed—thorough testing, diligent research, honest feedback and well-written reviews—but the way we build the Gear Guide continues to evolve with our readers’ needs. That’s why the 2027 Gear Guide is different.

Our core hardgoods reviews now go deeper, with longer reviews paired with short summaries so you can skim the essentials or dive deeper, plus we added a glossary so you can better understand the tech jargon. We’ve also expanded our apparel coverage with more full shell kits and added accessory reviews covering goggles, packs, beacons, skins and more.

Intern to cover photographer! Iz La Motte lands the 2027 Gear Guide cover—her first cover and our first Vermont Gear Guide cover EVER!

Iz first worked for Backcountry as a photo intern back in 2014. In the twelve years since, she’s become a leading ski photographer and filmmaker, shot five Backcountry Gear Test Weeks, earned a spot on our masthead as senior photographer and helped create the Girl Winter Film Tour.

After a decade of winters in Utah, she now lives full-time just a couple ridgelines over from Backcountry’s home office in Jeffersonville, Vermont. Last season, in her first winter stint back in Vermont, she captured her ski (and life) partner, Kyle Toohey, on an epic day in our shared backyard of Mount Mansfield. “This is what East Coast skier dreams are made of,” she said of the shot. “Nay, this is what skier dreams are made of. Period.”

ON THE COVER || Through the hot, muggy days of summer, skiers unite in a shared dream: that weightless feeling of floating between worlds, flitting between dappled light beneath an ethereal, grey sky. When photographer Iz La Motte and her ski/life partner Kyle Toohey traded Utah powder for an off-grid cabin in Vermont, their dreams consisted more of lush green summers than early season, blower pow. But last year, they got both. In December, Toohey skied off the top of Vermont’s Mount Mansfield in rare East Coast conditions. “This is what East Coast skier dreams are made of,” says La Motte. “Nay, this is what skier dreams are made of. Period.”
