It may or may not have taken 7 days, 4 rescuers, 5 attempts, and 2 different drop traps to get this family but I am happy to report the Lucky Charms kittens have all been rescued and are safely inside.

Mama Fortune Cookie was a feral lady so after recovering from her spay surgery she was returned outdoors. But Clover, Charm, Coin and Crane will never feel a drop of rain on their heads ever again and we certainly hope this will be the last time they ever experience the winning combo of giardia and coccidia parasites cramping their tiny bellies.

Thank you all for the concern for our stolen equipment and letting us do a small vent on the internet. I don’t expect it to be returned and frankly would rather leave this site behind than pursue it.

Rescue isn’t always easy but I’m so so glad our grit and determination paid off for little Clover.

Credit where it’s due: thank you @backyardcatsofbedstuy for waking up with me before the sun, thank you @ch__catsalon for your dedication to this block and expert wood pile poking skills, and thank you @catacademy.bk for going out at 2am in a Nor’easter and refusing to leave little Clover behind. 🍀 by @backyardcatsofbedstuy

Rescuing a whole family of cats can be complicated, as it isn’t always the case that an entire family of 5 goes under the drop trap at the same time.

But what ultimately made this trapping so much more difficult and higher stakes was how fragile the situation was for the humans involved. I don’t mean it in a misanthropic way, but navigating interpersonal politics with people can be a very challenging part of rescue.

Cat rescue truly works best when it’s done with the support of the local community. But “community” doesn’t always mean consensus. Neighbors on this block are deeply divided on what’s the best way to care for outdoor cats. There are over 20 cats living on just a 3 block radius here that we know of. Some neighbors are desperate to control the population and have the kittens get rescued. Meanwhile, others are deeply opposed to spay/neuter as an “immoral” act.

Getting caught trapping the first wave of this family meant that we not only had our equipment stolen but that getting the last two siblings was exponentially harder. Part 2 coming up! by @backyardcatsofbedstuy

Trapping this family of 5 has actually been a nightmare but at least the raccoons keep us laughing 🤣

In all seriousness, for the last week we’ve been working hard to help the cats on this block but it feels like we’ve gotten stymied at every turn. Anti-TNR feeders who are harassing the neighbors who *do* want to help the kittens get rescued and mom cats get spayed, $200+ dollars of equipment being stolen, and one last hold out kitten that we just can’t trap. ☹️ But getting 3 kittens for rescue and two adult females for spay is a victory and the seeing these silly raccoons a fun bright spot by @backyardcatsofbedstuy

4 days, some weather interference, lots of bug bites, and 8 cats trapped boiled down into 90s 😃

Mama Cereal did such an amazing job finding this overgrown backyard oasis to raise her SEVEN healthy babies. Thanks to the tenants who reached out at exactly the right time, these 8 week old kittens were able to come inside and quickly learn that indoors was much better than outside. Pairs Oat & Barley and Bran & Corn were adopted in a heartbeat, and the remaining trio Buckwheat, Farro, and Quinoa have promising applications already! Cereal was deliciously feral and made it very clear that she wanted to return to her backyard oasis. She has humans watching over her keeping her belly full, and she’ll no longer have to endure raising litter after litter further contributing to the overpopulation crisis of cats in Brooklyn.

This beautiful lady has been visiting my new friend @marthamydearest’s balcony for food and pets, and clearly she would prefer to not live on the street! Buuuut, I need a foster home for her in order to do that, and Martha is full up with three kittens and her two resident cats. This month I’ve taken in two mama cats and nine kittens and have had two different potential fosters ghost me 🥲 My own apartment is currently occupied by three of said kittens, my girl Millie, and my pup Lucy… so, please foster? Pretty please? You don’t need a lot of space, just a lot of love. My foster app is linked in my bio if anyone can help! Tell your friends! 🐱 taken in Bedford-Stuyvesant by @backyardcatsofbedstuy

Today, the 8th day of August, is International @rachelselekman Day! If you’ve been following me long enough, you’ll know that basically everything I know about TNR I learned from this incredible lady right here. Her tenacity, dedication, care, and sense of humor make my life, the lives of every person who knows her, and the lives of every cat she’s ever met, so, so much brighter. I am beyond lucky to call her my bestie and to know she’s always just one “I’m picking you up, we’re going trapping” text away.

Every August Rachel hosts an annual fundraiser for her birthday to try and offset the costs of care for the many, many cats she rescues every year (some… with my encouragement 🥲). This year is no different. Rach and I took on a big TNR project early this spring and out of the 20-odd cats we trapped, we realized that the matriarch of the colony was quite friendly. So, we kept her inside, but senior cats often come with medical “adventures,” and Ruth is no different. I’m linking Rachel’s fundraiser in my bio and on my story today — if you’re able to help, no donation is too small!

Please join me in wishing my bestie another joyous year around the sun. We love you, Rachel! 🥰
