Rescuing a whole family of cats can be complicated, as it isn’t always the case that an entire family of 5 goes under the drop trap at the same time.

But what ultimately made this trapping so much more difficult and higher stakes was how fragile the situation was for the humans involved. I don’t mean it in a misanthropic way, but navigating interpersonal politics with people can be a very challenging part of rescue.

Cat rescue truly works best when it’s done with the support of the local community. But “community” doesn’t always mean consensus. Neighbors on this block are deeply divided on what’s the best way to care for outdoor cats. There are over 20 cats living on just a 3 block radius here that we know of. Some neighbors are desperate to control the population and have the kittens get rescued. Meanwhile, others are deeply opposed to spay/neuter as an “immoral” act.

Getting caught trapping the first wave of this family meant that we not only had our equipment stolen but that getting the last two siblings was exponentially harder. Part 2 coming up!

4 days, some weather interference, lots of bug bites, and 8 cats trapped boiled down into 90s 😃

Mama Cereal did such an amazing job finding this overgrown backyard oasis to raise her SEVEN healthy babies. Thanks to the tenants who reached out at exactly the right time, these 8 week old kittens were able to come inside and quickly learn that indoors was much better than outside. Pairs Oat & Barley and Bran & Corn were adopted in a heartbeat, and the remaining trio Buckwheat, Farro, and Quinoa have promising applications already! Cereal was deliciously feral and made it very clear that she wanted to return to her backyard oasis. She has humans watching over her keeping her belly full, and she’ll no longer have to endure raising litter after litter further contributing to the overpopulation crisis of cats in Brooklyn.

Launching my Annual Birthday Fundraiser the eve before my bday cause tomorrow I’ll be on the road headed back to Brooklyn post-vacation.

It’s that time of year again — when I age and your generosity helps me help this year’s cats in need.

This year your support will help Little John and Ruth, two loving adult cats rescued from outside, both of which have needed extra veterinary care, with Ruth’s care ongoing. Of the $2,500 goal, $1,370 is to cover Little John’s veterinary care and the remaining $1,130 is to cover Ruth’s. You can read about each cat on my GoFundMe page (link in my bio). Donations can be made via my GoFundMe page or Venmo at Red-RobinBK. Truly, a donation in any amount is greatly appreciated because it all adds up! It’s an honor to help both Ruth and Little John. They deserve all the care we’re providing, and your support is instrumental.

To sum things up, Little John’s veterinary care including wound care and snap test ($135), bloodwork ($90), and a dental ($1,153) to extract a broken canine. Little John is recovering well from his dental and that bill will hit my credit card in a few weeks, so your support will help me be able to cover that charge. Thanks to @hanadesiree for partnering with me to help LJ, as well as all the feeders at the colony where he was found.

@backyardcatsofbedstuy and I have been fundraising for Ruth’s veterinary care, which has been substantial and is ongoing, for 4 months. We are $1,130 away from our goal. Ruth has had a lot going on, most critically a mass in her left ear, but she also needed to be spayed. Spay and ear mass removal (as much as the vet was able to excise) were done at the same time. The histopathology on the mass was inconclusive, so she’s now under the care of Dr. Macina, the dermatologist at Animal Medical Center, with one appointment there behind us and another in a few weeks.

Thanks for your support! Read more about these gorgeous gray kitties on my GFM page, and I’ll be posting more about them in the coming days.

And thank you to @parkslopevet for being our go-to amazing vet for both of these cats.

✨ UPDATE: FOSTER FOUND & ALBUS IS NOW ADOPTABLE! Contact @backyardcatsofbedstuy 🙏🏼

With the help of a kind neighbor, @backyardcatsofbedstuy and I were able to scoop this sweet cat today and end his trauma of being abandoned outside. Now we need someone to open their home to him temporarily — could it be you?

When a game of telephone thankfully goes right! ☎️
When @gabi_lamontagne, a contact of @danaandthecats, reached out because she heard on the grapevine there was a mom and kittens born in a basement in Bed Stuy that may need some help, we were able to connect the dots that this was a pregnant cat that @backyardcatsofbedstuy had been trying to rescue via a different neighbor before she gave birth.
While we are very glad that mama Gyoza and her 5 baby dumplings are here and that they’re healthy, lord KNOWS we already have too many kittens to worry about in this world! Once these babies are weaned, mom will be spayed, never to be pregnant again. She’ll find a home and her babies will be adopted in pairs (or to a home that already has a young cat for them to befriend!). That’s a long way off though, and for now we’re just focusing on getting them fat and doughy!

Thank you so much to @pharmdfelines for stepping up to foster this family and giving them a safe landing pad 🥰
More to come on these little ones, just you wait! 🥟
