Re-enacting John Cage’s piece 26’1.1499 for a string player after a performance by Charlotte Moorman and Nam June Paik as seen in a video by Jud Yaklut 1973. Tabea Schrenk and myself performed the roles of Moorman and Paik, including the human cello part. Our technician #BalthasarEffmert came up with brilliant solutions for the obsolete devices@we@had to use. Archivio Conz kindly some original performance relicts by Moorman / Paik, including the bomb used as cello. Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin hosted the night in the absolutely beautiful inner yard that is normally not open to public. It was an unforgettable evening! ✨ Thank you so much for writing about it, @anpaenhuysen, this is so much appreciated! Thank you also @electronicartsintermix for granting us access to the 1973 video, and @mccormicklibrary for sharing Moorman’s original scores! It was such a beautiful collaboration! Katharina Haider (@bacon_studios_berlin) ist seit 2012 selbstständige Restauratorin. Damit arbeitet sie in einer Branche, in der zwar die meisten Studierenden Frauen sind, aber Männer oft die Führung übernehmen. In einem Interview in der @restauro_zeitschrift spricht sie über die Herausforderungen, denen Frauen in der Branche begegnen und betont den unschätzbaren Wert von Mentoring.

Katharina kennt sich damit bestens aus: Sie ist nicht nur Mentorin bei MentorMe, sondern nimmt im neuen Programmjahr auch selbst als Mentee teil. 🙌

Im Interview verrät sie: “Ich bin Mitglied bei MentorMe. Dort hatte ich inzwischen zweimal die Gelegenheit, als Mentorin tätig zu sein – das macht mir viel Spaß. Es war überhaupt nicht einseitig, sondern ein richtiger Austausch. Ich konnte vieles weitergeben, ganz praktische Tipps, auch rund um Bewerbungen. Da ich selbst Arbeitgeberin bin, konnte ich ihnen erzählen, wie eine Bewerbung aus meiner Sicht wirkt und was ich erwarte. Gleichzeitig haben mir diese Gespräche gezeigt, wie viel ich selbst schon geschafft habe und was ich mir alles erarbeitet habe. Das tut gut – es stärkt das eigene Vertrauen in den Weg, den man gegangen ist.”

Wir sind dankbar, eine wunderbare Mentorin wie Katharina in unserer Community zu haben, die ihr Wissen und ihre Erfahrungen weitergibt und andere Frauen auf ihrem Weg stärkt.

Life long learning: The Plastics Heritage Congress, this time at Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli. 💚🤍❤️

The conference focus is the use and manufacture of historic polymers, including materials such as #casein #phenolformaldehyde #celluloseacetate #cellulosenitrate #bakelite.

It also includes more contemporary plastics like PVC, polystyrene, polyurethane or ABS, the material that Lego is made of.
Despite of aspects of conservation/restoration and material research and analysis, also aspects of contemporary product design and plastics in cultural heritage are addressed.

Rare visit at the Marées room at Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn at Naples Acquario, from 1872. The room was decorated with frescos by Hans von Marées (1837-1887) in collaboration with Adolf von Hildebrand, who created also the sculptures of Charles Darwin and embryologist Carl Ernst von Baer.
In the room, there is a painting of Italia and Germania, referring to the famous painting by Friedrich Overbeck and the collaboration of the two countries at Stazione Zoologica, which is one of the earliest and the world‘s leading research institutes for marine biology.
It also contains a group portrait with The Stazione’s founder Anton Dohrn, Konrad Fiedler, who sponsored some of the room‘s decorations, Marées and Hildebrand.
The Marées room is normally not accessible to the general public. The study of the “Rowers” is though kept at Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
An interesting fact is that Pablo Picasso, who visited the room, chose the female figure in the rower‘s boat as a stereotype for his female portraits.
I was lucky enough that one of the biologists showed me this beautiful room. Thank you so much!! The aquarium of Stazione is a highlight, too!

What I really love about this restoration treatment is, that in every single step it makes a huge difference HOW EXACTLY you actually do it.

🃏🛍<— bag of tricks

Which brush you use to clean the surface, the pressure, the rhythm of the movements. The behavior of the restoration materials, which changes over the course of the day. The tricks that make the application easy, the materials to clean afterwards…🧽🪥

Most rewarding is the protective coating: you have been doing your magic for days and days. And then you finally heat it up for a second, and everything starts to glow ✨💫💥

I cannot enough thank the Bavarian State Conservation Office for the analysis of the metal. Being able to understand what is part of the original patina is invaluable!! 🔬

Last check-up an preps at the studio for the next treatment:
A Gong sculpture by Italian-American artist Harry Bertoia. He is known for is wild experiments with funky alloys that are extremely challenging to preserve - especially when exposed outdoors. 🌦☔️🌬☃️
Many thanks to the research lab of the Bavarian State Conservaion Office, who supported this conservaion treatment with meticulous and excellent analysis 🔬
