In Baden Croft’s Old Man Banksia, 2026, a familiar Australian form is transformed through colour, texture and scale.

The cone rises green through cream and gold to a deep red crown, held within serrated leaves that cut across the canvas in pale zigzags. At first the subject is recognisable… the closer you look, the more unusual it becomes.

Up close, the surface breaks apart. Each floret becomes a separate mark, with layers of oil building a richly textured surface where the paint catches the light and casts its own shadows across the work.

Croft lives and works on the Mornington Peninsula. His practice is rooted in close observation of the Australian landscape, drawing on subjects including native flora, weathered gums and the underwater landscape. Since his first solo exhibition in 2017, he has exhibited in Melbourne and Sydney, with works held in private collections in Australia and internationally.

BEAUTIFUL install at the SENSATIONALLY stunning @yiaga.au restaurant yesterday 🙌🏽

Perfect artwork selection with this gorgeous @badencroft original painting mirroring the lush Fitzroy Gardens that this epic restaurant resides in 🌿

We were in absolute heaven as we hung this artwork…. Admittedly, with all the delicious aromas from the kitchen making it hard to concentrate…. What an INCREDIBLE space 🙌🏽
ALL of our senses were delighted 😃

Next time we go back, hopefully, it is to eat 😊🤞🏽

A studio visit reveals what we rarely see in the gallery: the hundreds of decisions that sit beneath the finished surface.

Witness summer’s texture and warmth in landscape-infused abstraction with Baden Croft. Synthesising memory, terrain and atmosphere in a way that mirrors how summer landscapes linger in the mind: bright, bold and persistent.

Built layer upon layer with a single palette knife, each mark responds to the one before it. This work belongs to the same considered rhythm that shaped ‘On a Knife’s Edge’, Baden’s current solo exhibition @kellilundberg.art where every painting needed to stand independently while contributing to a larger narrative of the Australian landscape.

Time in the studio is only one part of an artist’s practice. Art prizes, awards and exhibitions play an equally important role, offering opportunities for critical dialogue, wider audiences and the continued evolution of a career. Together, they form the ecosystem that allows a practice like Baden’s to grow.

Kosciusko Snow Gum emanates a rich warmth. Its canvas is suffused with a golden aura, whose deep orange, umber and russet tones contrast with the verdant hues of Alpine Gum.

Taken together, they serve as vignettes of the same varied landscape, differently marked perhaps by the passing seasons or merely the suffusion of sunlight throughout the day.
