Baden Croft’s Incoming, 2026, captures the branching forms of Australian gums in a composition charged with colour, movement and heavily worked paint. Coral, orange and cream sweep through the canopy against a blue sky, while dark branches fracture the composition. The vivid palette sits in contrast with the darkened trunks and long shadows stretching across the foreground. Up close, the surface reveals another layer of detail. Black paint builds into raised ridges along the trunks and branches, while short marks of white and lavender break up the bark. Against this dense, worked surface, the blue sky remains relatively flat, sharpening the contrast between the trees and the space around them. Based on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Croft draws on direct encounters with the landscape, from weathered gums and native flora to the underwater world he explores while freediving. His oil paintings are built through successive layers of paint, sometimes several centimetres thick, giving the surface a physicality that echoes the terrain itself. Since his first solo exhibition in 2017, he has exhibited in Melbourne and Sydney, with works held in private collections in Australia and internationally. Available for acquisition. A Murano glass chandelier. A monumental Bacchus. Sculptural forms in vivid yellow and red. Inside John’s Barn, the unexpected is part of the arrangement. Baroque: Doing It My Way, curated by Colin Hyett, brings contemporary art into conversation with sculpture, ceramics, glass and collected design. Within the architecture of the Barn, the familiar and the unconventional sit side by side, creating an interior that is as considered as it is eclectic. The exhibition continues to evolve, with new work joining the collection each month. This October, Ara Dolatian joins the exhibition, adding a new perspective to the presentation. Baroque: Doing It My Way continues at John’s Barn this weekend, with new works by Joel Gailer and Brad Gunn joining the exhibition. Curated by Colin Hyett, the exhibition brings together painting, sculpture, furniture and collected objects within the old timber barn, where art and design are considered alongside one another. Across the space, colour, scale, form and material create unexpected relationships between works. A monumental sculpture sits alongside a luminous circular work, while furniture and collected objects become part of the composition rather than simply its setting. It is an exhibition shaped by the way these works meet, contrast and complement one another. We look forward to welcoming you to John’s Barn this weekend! Baden Croft’s White Menziesii takes the banksia flower head as its subject, rendered at near monumental scale. Lit from one side, the florets on the left sit almost white, packed in rows to the edge of the form. On the right, they sink into olive until only the tips remain visible. Below, the leaves are laid in flat black-green, each tooth cut with a pale edge. Up close, the paint stands off the canvas. Croft loads every floret as a separate mark, the raised surface catching the light and casting small shadows across the rows beneath. What reads from a distance as a single botanical form becomes, at close range, a field of individual gestures. Based on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Croft works across painting and a sustained engagement with the landscape around him, from the bushland and coastline to the underwater world he encounters while freediving. His heavily layered oil paintings build their subjects through accumulation, with paint applied up to several centimetres thick. Since his first solo exhibition in 2017, he has exhibited in Melbourne and Sydney, with works held in private collections in Australia and internationally. Available for acquisition. Come with me through John’s Barn. Inside Baroque: Doing It My Way, Colin Hyett brings together painting, sculpture, furniture and collected objects in an evolving interior where the works are considered alongside one another. Colin Hyett’s paintings begin with flowers and living things before dissolving into fields of colour. Ben Sheers’ sculptures bring three individual forms together as one composition. Max Patté’s Spring Symphony builds layer upon layer, transforming the wall behind it. Patté’s work is held in the collection of Sir Ian McKellen. Natalie Ryan’s The Nothing brings Gmork from The NeverEnding Story into the Barn, constructed through animatronics, prosthetics and sound. Brad Gunn’s Mope-head sits somewhere between sculpture and light fitting, its velvet surface catching the light. Kate Rohde’s Deer Urn brings Rococo ornament together with animal form. Her work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of South Australia. Baden Croft’s banksia paintings translate the Australian landscape through heavily worked oil, informed by his close engagement with the Mornington Peninsula and the underwater world. And finally, William Eicholtz’s Impossible Cornucopia, a three-and-a-half-metre Bacchus spilling fruit from a chest of drawers beneath the e Moderno Siena chandelier. That’s only part of what’s in the Barn. Leigh Houliston. Joel Gailer. Brad Gunn. And more. Viewings by appointment outside viewing hours.
