In the shadow of Rosebank and Jackdaw, Heathrow 3rd runway, and rampant carspreading, many local authorities across the UK and Europe are taking action to end the influence of major polluters.

Just last month Bristol Council joined Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Florence and Hackney as the latest city to restrict advertising and sponsorship for high carbon products such as fossil fuels, airlines, non-electric cars and in some instances, meat and dairy.

Join our panel of experts to hear how residents, campaigners and policymakers can engage London councils and Transport for London to end the promotion of polluting products in our public spaces.

Speakers:

🐥 @carladenyer is the Green MP for Bristol Central. As a councillor, Carla helped introduce a ban on junk food advertising on Bristol Council-owned billboards and screens back in 2021, and supported the recent expansion of that policy to include adverts for ultra-fast fashion, fossil fuels, SUVs and airlines.

🐥 @r.n.barker is a councillor and former deputy mayor of The Hague in the Netherlands. The Hague was the first city in the world to legally ban high carbon advertising in public space and Robert was instrumental in accomplishing this.

🐥Cllr @rachaelpenny.greenparty is a green councillor for St Giles Ward in Southwark and a member of Adblock South London - a campaign seeking to reduce the harms of corporate advertising in our neighbourhoods.

And this year’s winners have been making some truly spectacular contributions to the world of sportswashing.

🏆 BAD SPORT OF THE YEAR: FIFA

FIFA sold its top sponsorship tier to Aramco - the world’s largest corporate emitter.

According to Carbon Majors, Aramco was responsible for 4.28% of global CO2 emissions in 2024 - more than any other company.

But the damage doesn’t stop there.

Our research estimates the deal will generate 34.7 million tonnes of CO2e through the emissions associated with its sponsorship impact.

That’s 83% of the total sponsorship impact from big polluters - and far more than the tournament’s direct operational emissions.

👕 THE ‘SHIRT OF SHAME’ AWARD: ITALIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL

The Italian Football Federation has gone back for a second helping of fossil money.

It has signed a deal making SOCAR - Azerbaijan’s state oil company - the sponsor of Italy’s national teams from 2027 to 2030. 🤢

And what's worse is that prior to Italy's deal with SOCAR, it was sponsored by ENI.

Yes, ANOTHER major fossil fuel company.

🥇 THE ‘PODIUM POLLUTER’ AWARD: ENI

But Eni hasn't disappeared - it was a major sponsor of a Winter Olympics at a time when snow sports has never had less snow.

Yet research by New Weather found that the 2026 Winter Games contributed to the problem, generating 930,000 tonnes of CO2e.

And Eni’s own emissions put that sponsorship in some perspective:

Just a single year of Eni’s CO2 emissions could melt enough glacier ice to fill 2.5 MILLION Olympic swimming pools.

🏆 THE ‘BAD AWARD’ AWARD: FIFA

FIFA announced its own Peace Prize.

Gianni Infantino then presented it himself at the World Cup draw.

The recipient? The USA's war-hungry, climate-wrecking President. 😬

The concerning ties between Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump came into the spotlight again recently when the brother of Trump's son-in-law was behind a controversial deal to privatise FIFA. by @badvertising11

The Brussels Region is asked to initiate a legal study into such a ban and to exclude advertising for fossil fuel products and services from regional concessions. This is the 5th municipality in the Brussels region calling on the capital to ban fossil ads.

🚨 Helsinki votes to ban fossil fuel advertising! 🇫🇮

Helsinki City Council has voted to restrict advertising for fossil fuels and other climate-harming products and services, making it the second Nordic capital to move towards a fossil ad ban, after Stockholm.

The decision puts Helsinki among a growing number of European cities taking action to stop public spaces being used to promote pollution-as-usual. 📺💨
