It’s that time again! Announcing upcoming readings and the US book launch for Die Alp an sich, my book of translations and retellings of Swiss folklore from the Sarganserland with @baertobi published by Poets & Traitors Press.

This Saturday, May 30th we will be doing a performative reading at the @zwischentext literature festival, heimat/home 2.0, in Biel at 1:30.

We’ll also join the @ineverreadartbookfairbasel radio program on Wednesday, June 17th from 7:30-8pm. Tune in or catch us in person at Viaductstrasse 33 in Basel, where the book fair will share a location with Basel Social Club. I’ll be tabling for @oreadespress throughout the week with my friends at @lemonpresszurich so please drop by!

On Thursday, June 25th, the long awaited Poets & Traitors Press book launch boat party is happening, departing from Chelsea Piers. We’ll be celebrating the US launch of Die Alp an sich alongside the launch of our editor Val Vinokur’s book, Barking at God and poet Richard Lourie’s Little Treasons. This is a limited guest list because of the boat, so message well ahead if you want to join, but I’ve probably already added you to the list.

Post party, we’ll be doing a cozier reading with @vinokurval in the backyard patio of @unnameablebooks in Brooklyn on Tuesday, June 30th from 7-8:30pm.

I finally return to Massachusetts on Wednesday, July 1st for our reading at @brooklinebooksmith at 7pm in Boston for their Transnational Literature Series, followed by our final reading on Thursday, July 2nd at 6pm at the @salemathenaeum in their beautiful garden. by @baertobi

Had to wait to return to the mountains to shoot Die Alp an sich, the fifth book I've designed so far. Writing books is thrilling, but designing and making them is a special kind of joy I don't think I'll ever get tired of.

We’re halfway through our Swiss book launch with a cultural exhibition up at Schloss Sargans until the end of the year. Our art exhibition is up at @viereinhalbsg in St. Gallen, the capital of the canton, until November 24th.

This Friday, November 14th, Elisabeth Mätzler, a member of the Swiss Organization of Trained Storytellers, will recount stories from Die Alp an sich in Schloss Sargans for Die Schweitzer Erzählnacht. We’re grateful for the support of Stiftung Sargans and Mutabor Märchenstiftung, the foundation for fairy tales and storytelling culture, for helping to make this possible.

We’ll also be doing a reading and short talk at @volumeszurich Sofa Book Club next Saturday, November 22nd from 2-3pm in Gessnerallee alongside tabling that weekend at the art book fair with some of our favorite book friends and colleagues!

Sunday, November 23rd, will also be the final day of the 18th Internationale Bodensee Konferenz (IBK) at Kunsthaus Appenzell and @baertobi will be there. Over the course of the conference, participants engaged with myths, fairy tales, legends, and sagas. At the end of September, we presented Die Alp an sich there, representing the Canton of St. Gallen. by @baertobi

Took a little break from work related posts but @baertobi and I can finally invite you to the Swiss launch of our book, Die Alp an sich, and the opening of our artistic and cultural exhibition on October 31st at @schloss_sargans the medieval castle where some of these stories took place. We’ll continue with a more conceptual art exhibition at Projektraum 4 1/2 in St Gallen on November 7th, take part in Die Schweizer Erzählnacht @sikjm_ch on November 14th, and finish at @volumeszurich on November 22nd and 23rd. Our US launch will take place next spring.

Die Alp an sich is a bilingual collection of literary translations of Swiss folklore from the Sarganserland region published with Poets & Traitors Press. Translated for the first time from Swiss German and High German into English, the book dwells on the lifespan of these stories through time with past versions paired with historical context, new retellings, and excerpts from 19th to 21st century folklorists, including an essay by contemporary folklorist Dr. Meret Fehlmann at the University of Zürich.

Special thanks to @vinokurval for his editing contributions and for reaching out to us to give this book a home. Founded by Val in 2017, Poets & Traitors Press has its home in Eugene Lang’s literary translation department, and this book felt like the product of both my writing and literary studies at The New School and my time studying in Switzerland, running along the lakes and traversing the Alps. taken in Schloss Sargans by @baertobi

@racheltonthat and Tobias Bärtsch @baertobi present selections from Die Alp an sich, a bilingual English-German volume translating and retelling Swiss folklore.

Spanning poetry, translation, and oral storytelling traditions, these books explore how language carries voices across borders, generations, and forms.

TOBIAS BÄRTSCH

Tobias Bärtsch widmet sich als transdisziplinärer Künstler der Erforschung unserer kulturellen Identität, die durch das digitale Zeitalter geprägt ist. Seine Arbeit beginnt oft mit Text und erstreckt sich über verschiedene künstlerische Medien, um die Vielschichtigkeit der zeitgenössischen Kultur zu ergründen. Dabei liegt ein Fokus auf der Sprache und ihrer Rolle in unserer Selbst- und Weltwahrnehmung. Er untersucht persönliche Erzählungen und Popkultur, um ein Licht auf die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen Technologie, Erinnerung und individueller Identität zu werfen.

For the past year, @baertobi and I have been working on a translation project and artist book on folktales from the Sarganserland region of Switzerland, where Tobi is from.

Since then, I've learned of mountain horror stories involving puppets, to beware the Föhn, and so many more strange and wonderful stories and histories that we hope to share early next year.
