POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Moments from the last month and a half of book promotion for Die Alp an sich in Biel, Switzerland for a literary festival, at an impromptu and truly bilingual reading with @rudolfstueger in Bad Ischl, Austria, the unbelievable Poets and Traitors three book launch on a superyacht on the Hudson, and readings in Brooklyn, Boston and Salem with @vinokurval and our amazing moderators Rita Mookerjee @melanincholia and @aidafeng

Thank you to everyone who came out—we had a great turnout—and also to everyone who has come to support me at less populated readings and events over the years where there have been literally five people in the audience! (This still happens.)

Last Thursday, our Salem Athenaeum event which was initially meant to be in their garden, was first moved to their reading room because of the heat wave and ended up in the community room of the Salem Public Library after their AC broke, next to the children’s section where I haven’t stepped foot in in years.

It’s almost eerie to think of myself there as a child years ago, reading books and wanting to be a writer.

We had a stunning and absolutely brilliant event with Rachel TonThat, Tobias Bärtsch, and conversation partner Dr. Rita Mookerjee to discuss and honor the release of Die Alp an sich: Tales from the Sarganserland. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Die Alp an sich is a bilingual collection of literary translations of Swiss folklore from the Sarganserland region by Tobias Bärtsch and Rachel TonThat. Translated from Swiss German and High German into English for the first time, the book dwells on the lifespan of the stories through time with past versions paired with historical context, new retellings, and excerpts from 19th to 21st century folklorists, including an essay by folklorist Dr. Meret Fehlmann at the University of Zurich.

“TonThat and Bärtsch make language perceptible across languages and honor the creative work of translation—producing a work of rare coherence . . . Under TonThat’s direction, this multilayered, carefully designed form—from film photography to overall design—elevates the book far beyond a simple collection, making it a work that not only preserves the traditions but also reflects on, interrogates, and revitalizes them.” —Janin Pisarek, folklorist, narrative researcher, and Vice President of the European Fairy Tale Society

It’s that time again! Announcing upcoming readings and the US book launch for Die Alp an sich, my book of translations and retellings of Swiss folklore from the Sarganserland with @baertobi published by Poets & Traitors Press.

This Saturday, May 30th we will be doing a performative reading at the @zwischentext literature festival, heimat/home 2.0, in Biel at 1:30.

We’ll also join the @ineverreadartbookfairbasel radio program on Wednesday, June 17th from 7:30-8pm. Tune in or catch us in person at Viaductstrasse 33 in Basel, where the book fair will share a location with Basel Social Club. I’ll be tabling for @oreadespress throughout the week with my friends at @lemonpresszurich so please drop by!

On Thursday, June 25th, the long awaited Poets & Traitors Press book launch boat party is happening, departing from Chelsea Piers. We’ll be celebrating the US launch of Die Alp an sich alongside the launch of our editor Val Vinokur’s book, Barking at God and poet Richard Lourie’s Little Treasons. This is a limited guest list because of the boat, so message well ahead if you want to join, but I’ve probably already added you to the list.

Post party, we’ll be doing a cozier reading with @vinokurval in the backyard patio of @unnameablebooks in Brooklyn on Tuesday, June 30th from 7-8:30pm.

I finally return to Massachusetts on Wednesday, July 1st for our reading at @brooklinebooksmith at 7pm in Boston for their Transnational Literature Series, followed by our final reading on Thursday, July 2nd at 6pm at the @salemathenaeum in their beautiful garden.

Meine Rezension zu »Die Alp an Sich: Tales from the Sarganserland«
