When the artist tunes his creative choices to the orders of a grim techno-god with a whip in his hand, always screaming “more capital (or ‘content’) for the sake of more capital (content)”, he engages in an act of prayer: acting, thinking and feeling for an ‘other’. But this god rewards the work neither upon its merit of truth nor of its transformative power, though it is quitely aware of both their presence in it, but rather upon its potential to 'please' - the primordial telos upon which the tall and terrible tower of capitalism rests. It knows that so long as the telos isn't questioned, all that is good and true will sooner or later, dissolve itself into its abyss.

Thus, the higher unachievable-ideal that the artist directs all his labour towards becomes a ‘balance of pleasures induced’ in both himself (when creating/rewarded) and the viewer (when receiving striking/interesting craftwork). Hence, the aesthetic philosophy whose sole ideal is the production/inducement of beauty/pleasure, divorced from any ethical bounds or correspondence with reality, paves the way for aesthetic nihilism: the belief that form/style is an end in and of itself - the long and glorious act whose finale is the creation of AI art.

Tragically, the creative who breaks his bones for ages to satisfy this ideal is the sharpest shovel in the baal worshipping techno-god's inventory, religiously determined to rob humanity of its divine capacity to create - once a primordial duty, a gift bestowed to Adam so that God may come to know the fruits of His creation, and therefore, Himself. by @baigus_

In these verses from his great work from Bal-e-Jibril, Masjid-e-Qurtuba, Iqbal introduces time less as a serial concept than as a quiet force at work, shaping things without announcing itself. ‘Do not vilify time, for time is God’, declares the Noble Prophet (PBUH). Day and night are not simply alternations of light and dark, but the very medium through which existence takes form. Like two threads of the same fabric, they give contour to life through contrast and continuity. What seems stable is slowly being woven, tested, and reshaped, while meaning reveals itself indirectly, never in essence, only in trace and effect. The universe is constantly evolving, and so is Adam, being witnessed and tested by Time.

The movement of time is carrying a faint but persistent tension here. There is ascent and descent, clarity and obscurity, each exposing something about what passes through it. Nothing escapes this scrutiny. Time measures worth without argument, thinning out what lacks weight and preserving only what can endure motion. Decline, here, is not dramatic but almost administrative, a natural consequence of inner weakness rather than an external blow.

Iqbal reflects in his Reconstruction: “It is not a block universe, a finished product, immobile and incapable of change. Deep in its inner being lies,
perhaps, the dream of a new birth. In fact, this mysterious swing and impulse of the universe, this noiseless swim of time which appears to us, human beings, as the movement of day and night, is regarded by the Quran as one of the greatest signs of God.”

At a certain depth, even the distinction between night and day dissolves. They merge into a single current where beginnings and endings lose their sharpness. Human skill, ambition, and form belong to this flow and share its impermanence. Old and new alike move toward erasure, yet this awareness is not bleak. It sharpens perception. To know that everything passes is to understand why stillness is dangerous, and why life, if it is to mean anything, must remain in motion, which is a keystone in the dynamism of Iqbal’s thoughts.

As the Sun descends and the sky is painted a vibrant orange, the Adhan (call to prayer) for Maghrib sounds. During Ramadan, this marks the end of the day-long fast, and Muslims around the world gather to have their meal.

Upon the Iftaar mats at LUMS, students, teachers, administrative and custodian staff alike convene under the divine ordinance of “fasting,” - giving birth to a community that reflects the eternal benevolence of the millennia-old religious tradition. Often shared with family or friends on campus, this meal helps foster a sense of oneness amongst all those in attendance, providing them a semblance of Iftars at home.

Crowdsourced and managed by student volunteers, the Iftar experience embodies the charitable and compassionate aspects of Ramadan, exemplifying the Prophet's (PBUH) teaching: “Whoever provides the food for a fasting person to break his fast with, then for him is the same reward as that fasting person." "You are so young, you have not even begun, and I would l like to beg you, dear Sir, as well as I can, to have patience with everything that is unsolved in your heart and to try to cherish the questions themselves, like closed rooms and like books written in a very strange tongue. Do not search now for the answers which cannot be given you because you could not live them. It is a matter of living everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, one distant day, live right into the answer."

If you told the Rayyan a year before now that he would be appearing on national Television to talk about a film he made, he would laugh at you. If you told him that this film would be endorsed by a scholar that he spent his entire A-levels listening to: he'd faint from joy.

"Al-Asr" was never made as a "religious" film per say, but as a foundation of an idea, a dream. A dream of creatives across the globe using art to tell stories that bring people closer to their true purpose, to their spirituality, to their creator, to themselves. Stories that allow us to revisit our legends, our traditions, our scriptures, our scholars - in an effort to revive what it means to be a person of true faith. To tell tales of the ways of people that lived glorious lives, and of the scripture by which they were guided. For powerful stories are like blazing torches - and it's upto the bearer to use it to burn, or to guide.

Al-Asr is an ode to independent artistic creation, and a reminder of the responsibility that comes with it - for anyone who chooses to walk down its path.

As my brother in faith (and the writer of this film) @sarim_gillani puts it:
وقتِ فُرصت ہے کہاں، کام ابھی باقی ہے
نورِ توحيد کا اِتمام ابھی باقی ہے

Let this effort be the first of many (God willing) by @baigus_

Whenever I feel creatively drained I find myself scrolling through YouTube videos or reading up on being a better artist and trying out different shenanigans which claim to provide remedy for my illness - they don't, mostly.

So, this quote by @rickrubin "No one knows HOW it (creativity) works and no one knows WHY it works", as scary as it may sound, comes in handy to provide some comfort in those uncertain times.

It's you. You know why it works. You know how it works. by @baigus_
