As the Sun descends and the sky is painted a vibrant orange, the Adhan (call to prayer) for Maghrib sounds. During Ramadan, this marks the end of the day-long fast, and Muslims around the world gather to have their meal.

Upon the Iftaar mats at LUMS, students, teachers, administrative and custodian staff alike convene under the divine ordinance of “fasting,” - giving birth to a community that reflects the eternal benevolence of the millennia-old religious tradition. Often shared with family or friends on campus, this meal helps foster a sense of oneness amongst all those in attendance, providing them a semblance of Iftars at home.

Crowdsourced and managed by student volunteers, the Iftar experience embodies the charitable and compassionate aspects of Ramadan, exemplifying the Prophet's (PBUH) teaching: “Whoever provides the food for a fasting person to break his fast with, then for him is the same reward as that fasting person." (Tirmidhi 807).

In The Pursuit of Ishq | Introducing to you, Ustad Sher Zaman, the veteran calligrapher behind the “Rabbi Zidni Ilma” design written on all four entrances of the academic block. The prayer serves as a reminder to let oneself remain curious in the pursuit of knowledge, and to not let the purity of that pursuit get tainted by worldly conjectures. Taking years of dedication and discipline, Ustad Sher Zaman lives by example, ensembled in this pursuit of Ishq with these letters.

For him, calligraphy takes on a sacred dimension, the ‘Alifs’ and ‘Sheens’ reflecting a reverence of divinity. Whether it’s the letter “Lam” rising tall like a minaret, or the playful curves of “Ya” resembling a leaf. The beauty of qalams and miswaks, the extraordinary power of strokes and fine linings can only be seen through a keen eye, such as Ustad Sher Zaman’s. Each stroke transmits not just words, but feelings, creating a connection between the artist, the viewer, and the message.

He sits in his simple office on the first floor of the academic block (REDC side) right next to the lift and teaches calligraphy from 11am till 3pm from Tuesdays to Thursdays. Next time you decide to go visit Ustad Sher Zaman, witness the dance of lines, the play of colors, and the depth of emotions. Let it be a window into a rich cultural heritage and gateway to understanding the ‘Husn’ of Arabic language and art.

This video is a celebration of his pure love for calligraphy, for artists as dedicated as him are hard to come these days.
