One of the questions I get asked most during weddings is:

“how are you painting from two different photos?”

The answer is a little bit of mental Photoshop. ✨

While I’m painting live, I’m constantly combining elements from different moments of the day. Sometimes the ceremony took place in the most breathtaking landscape, but the couple’s favorite portrait happened somewhere else.

It’s less about copying a photo and more about telling the story of the day exactly as it felt.

This painting was inspired by a romantic, Twilight-esque vision, with deep blue tones, moody florals, and ambiance✨. 💙

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had guests come up to me completely shocked that I’m painting the moment that’s happening right in front of them.

One of the main questions I get asked is “how do you combine one background scene with a pose from another moment?” The answer? Mental photoshop! As long as the lighting is similar in the reference photos, I can often use up to four different pictures to create the perfect composition for a painting ✨

Planning a 2027 wedding in Southern California? Imagine your guests checking on the painting between dances, pointing out new details, and bringing someone else over to see it.

I wish I could properly convey the magic that live painting brings to weddings - even the smallest weddings end up with crowds by the easel. It’s wedding entertainment at it’s best, except the final results lives on so much longer after the memories fade. ✨🩵

Send this to someone planning a 2027 wedding 🤍

Two weddings ago a VERY important part of my easel fell off along a mile long gravel road. After searching for 30+ min in 100 degree heat…I found it - 10 minutes before guests started arriving.

Needless to say, I was stressed (hence this video), but I know that wedding planning can be just as stressful, if not more so!

So show how you’re doing (or surviving), but gifs only 🥰

I genuinely used to believe that any artist could do my job.

I thought that the only thing that was keeping everyone from being a live wedding painter was the familiarity with working outdoors.

But recently I’ve really started to comprehend just how complex the job really is. Not only are you speed painting, but you’re fighting the elements, unpredictable wedding timelines, juggling talking to guests, moving setups in extreme weather, and capturing what takes most artists days in a matter of hours - all before a live audience of 200 people.

It’s definitely not for the faint of heart 😅 Every moment counts, every little decision matters, and there’s rarely a time when it all goes perfectly according to plan.

I think it’s this unpredictability that I’ve truly began to appreciate. It used to stress me out when I faced obstacles on a wedding day, but now I know that every wedding and wedding painting has its own set of obstacles…and that challenge can be a thrill if you have the right perspective.

Vote for your favorite near-tragedy below 😬😅

Partly clumsiness, partly just wrong place wrong time - I guess if you’ve been to enough weddings, something is bound to go wrong eventually. Although, I will say I think I have a pretty interesting track record when compared to other live wedding painters 😅

BUT - each time the day was saved, no one was hurt, and everything came up roses 🌹

Let’s cross our fingers that there’s no disasters for any 2027 weddings 🤞

Moments like this are why I love being a live wedding painter. Watching your painting come together gives guests something to enjoy throughout the celebration… but sometimes the reveal can bring a whole different kind of emotion. There are plenty of late nights, long drives, heavy supply hauls, last-minute composition adjustments, and hours of painting that happen long after the wedding day is over.

But in the end, I get to spend my weekends creating art in the middle of some of the happiest, most meaningful moments of someone’s life.

I get to watch the florist arrange the finishing touches, watch the bride show off her beautiful gown, see the guests tear up at the vows, and hear guests react as the painting comes to life.

I’m lucky because I get to preserve a tiny piece of a day you’ll never get back and being trusted with that is something I’ll never take for granted.🤍

Honestly I take confusion as the highest form of compliment. And I totally get it, most people have never seen an artist paint live - let alone at a wedding! I genuinely love answering their questions, blowing their minds, and giving them a truly memorable experience.

That being said, some of the things they say do crack me up sometimes. The other day an Auntie came up to me and watched for a long time before she asked “are you an artist”, 😂 which I’m pretty sure that part was a little bit self explanatory, but it made my night nonetheless.

Thinking about having a live wedding painter at your wedding? A little planning makes the experience more fun for you and your guests 🎨

1. More time means more painting. Taking your reference photos earlier in the day gives me more time to paint your likeness before the night ends. I generally recommend artist arrival around 2-3 hours before guest arrival, and taking a pose reference shot during the first look (if you’re having one)

2. Cocktail hour goes by fast. Guests often head straight for drinks, then food, then mingling, THEN entertainment. With such a short window of time and guests’ attention elsewhere, setting the live painter up near the reception entrance gives them a better chance to be wowed by the painting when they walk in.

3. Location is everything. A spot guests pass throughout the reception lets them check back and watch the painting progress. Usually the best spots are 1) near the buffet or bar line 2) near the entrance to the reception 3) near the photo booth. Keep in mind most live painters need a nearby outlet for lighting as well ☺️

Every live painter is different, but these choices can help make the live wedding painting experience the best it can be for you and your guests. 🤍
