Bakotopia is featured @artscouncilofkern as part of the “Clippings” exhibition celebrating the 160th birthday @bakersfieldcali 🎂. Bakotopia & MAS Magazine were part of The Californian’s niche product division, Mercado Nuevo, where I spent my years as editor, writer, marketing, event producer, podcaster and Web engagement guru on the Bakotopia.com website and print edition featuring the quirky, eclectic fun side of Bakersfield life. The partnerships, collaborations and friendships we developed with photographers, writers, and creatives of every walk of life was life changing, showcasing the best of our community. The world of multimedia content creation had arrived and there was no turning back. We managed to create our own little place in the community and it was so fun. Sadly, the websites for Bakotopia, MAS, and the NW & SW Voice products no longer exist. I did manage to save the Bakotopia Mag print archive files before I left the newsroom 😎🤙🏽 **The “Clippings” exhibition can be viewed at the ACK through mid-Sept. 🎶

There are no words to describe the sadness I still feel since getting the news that our brother, homie, friend and all-around sweet dude Ruben Valverde passed following a bout with cancer.

I first met Ruben when he was fronting the Bakersfield screamo band From Ritual to Romance. This was about 2006-2007 and they were buzzing on MySpace and doing shows. I was especially impressed because Ruben was a big dude at the time, and he could sing and scream into the mic with the voice of ten men. The Bakersfield music scene at the time was really busy, bands of all ages everywhere, and lots of original music. Ruben’s band even won an opening slot on the Rockstar Energy “Taste of Chaos” tour opening for 30 seconds to Mars and The Used at Selland Arena in Fresno, California. I also featured a track by From Ritual to Romance on the Bakotopia music CD compilation volume one released in 2007.

I hadn’t seen Ruben in years until one day I went into Guitar Center to buy some sound gear and he was there working. It was great to see him. He had great energy and he had slimmed down looking happy. Then one day I found out he was working with promoter Eddy Numbskull at Numbskull Shows. That was the perfect job for Ruben. He had experience on stage and off, knew how to deal with musicians, and engineering, and knew how to keep a good team together. If you were short on bread and really wanted to go to a show he would be the guy to text you with, “I got you buddy.”

When Ruben had bravely revealed publicly that he had cancer, I couldn’t believe it. This was a guy that I would see at shows always smiling, always making you feel welcome and just loved being around musicians and the live music environment. I know I’m not the only one to shower him with praise for being a great friend and an outstanding human being. Ruben fought the darkness of his situation like a champ until the very end. He had so much more life to live and he will be missed. Nothing but fun memories to celebrate you by! See you on the other side brother! 🙏🏽❤️🎶 @rubennotthesanwich taken in East Bakersfield by @bakotunes

Video Drop 🎥: VANS Warped Tour, Long Beach, CA. 7/25-26/26. Definitely a different experience for a Gen Xr making a return after attending Warped Tours since their beginnings. No more old school punk stage, but there were enough veteran acts and new music to keep you standing in the sun 🤘🏽🥵 Did it up for two solid days, interviewed some phenomenal artists (coming to @bakotunes ) and relived some glory days with my homie D 🍺 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 😎🤙🏽🎶 Don’t Stay Home. Get Out and Enjoy Your Life.
