This console display in our Dorset cottage project is a beautiful example of how mixing materials can add depth and character to a space, without over-cluttering it. The wooden cupboard, woven paper-cord doors and brass table lamp offset smooth with textured, matt with glossy, hard with soft, introducing subtle contrasts. Honeyed undertones and repeating checkerboard patterns tie everything together for a look that’s calm, considered and warmly layered.

A quiet pause to end a busy week, with a favourite artwork and golden autumn sunshine for company. When designing an interior we always consider the small details as much as the bigger picture, creating homes that make everyday moments such as this more beautiful.

The colours and textures of nature often find their way into our work, and this autumnal palette is a perfect example. Timeless and warm, it offsets muted beiges and chocolate browns with deep rusts, burgundies and ochres. The materials mix organic textures such as jute, wool, oak and marble with lustrous velvet and metals that will develop a beautiful patina as they age. The result is a scheme that’s rich yet restrained, with subtle contrasts and layers of interest.

The first autumn leaves are a joy to see. This season’s natural palette - rich amber, terracotta, burgundy and ochre against earthy brown and olive tones - always provides inspiration, whether it be for a full interior colour scheme or a few accents here and there.

Calm, timeless design can have fun elements, as the family bathroom at our modern farmhouse project shows. It’s mainly used by the children, so we incorporated wavy shapes, stripes and a pop of terracotta to add a gently playful twist to the otherwise sophisticated space. Patinated bronze taps and wall lamps reflect the warm undertones of the bathtub and mirror frame, tying the scheme together. Simple panelled walls and a trough sink give nods to the house’s agricultural heritage and its peaceful setting amid rolling Wiltshire fields.

Candlelight can be an important design element, especially at this time of year as autumn sets in and daylight dwindles. It creates a soothing glow, together with flickering shadows that bring depth and atmosphere to a space. It can also benefit our wellbeing, improving our mood and helping our eyes and minds to unwind at the end of the day.

A simple tip for making the most of candlelight is to place candles in front of a mirror or a plain wall, which amplifies their effect. Then, on either side, position objects with interesting shapes and textures that slowly reveal themselves in the soft light, as we did in the main bedroom of our Dorset cottage renovation.

Context is fundamental to the way we design.

We take time to understand the architecture, environmental setting and character of a home, allowing each to shape the interiors.

The pantry of our modern farmhouse in Wiltshire illustrates this approach. The building was once a cowshed, and the exposed stone walls, utilitarian wall lamp and blackened oak cabinets provide gentle nods to its agricultural heritage. The result is a space with depth and soul, and one that’s entirely at ease in its surroundings.

The natural instinct when faced with a dark room is often to fight against the gloom with bright colours, but sometimes it’s better to embrace the moody light. That’s what we did in the boot room and utility of our Dorset cottage renovation, painting the walls, cabinets and woodwork in @paintandpaperlibrary’s Copper Beech. It’s a deep, earthy brown that shifts between aubergine and burgundy depending on the time of day, and it creates a warm, inviting cocoon - the perfect welcome home after long walks in the surrounding countryside.

The room as a whole was designed to be as practical as it is beautiful. The flagstone floor was chosen for its ability to withstand muddy wellies and paws, and it fits perfectly into the rural setting. Tongue-and-groove panelling enhances the cottage aesthetic, as does the @torimurphytextiles gingham skirt that hides the washing machine and dryer. Brass hardware adds to the rich, layered feel and will develop a characterful patina through time and use.

At Balance, we believe that the most appealing interiors aren’t those that are centred around trends or polished to perfection. Instead, they’re those that are deeply rooted in place, purpose and quality, with handcrafted pieces that bring warmth, character and timeless beauty.

If you’d like to explore how we could help you create a home with soul, just get in touch. We’re currently taking enquires for projects from early 2027 onwards.

Last week we showed you the home office at our Georgian country house project, and now here’s the study in our Dorset cottage renovation.

Located in an unused corner of the hallway, it has the same focus on timeless, natural materials as the rest of the interior, bringing together the contemporary, the antique and the handmade. A gently curved @sohohome desk anchors the space, its dark oak and ridged detailing adding subtle texture and depth. It’s paired with a Model 62 armchair, designed by Niels Otto Møller in 1962, whose classic silhouette blends comfort with character. An antique Persian rug and a moody skyscape (painted by me, Balance founder Gemma) tie the scheme together, creating a space that’s calm yet imbued with warmth and richness.

These beautiful bronze and ecru tones and intricate details adorn a favourite and much-loved artwork, on display on the galleried landing of our Georgian country house. Titled ‘Forest Floor’, it’s by @bykatiegraham , whose paintings are made of silk, ink and thread on Belgian linen. Hand-dyed and hand-stitched, they celebrate the importance of touch, “evoking the feeling of sand between our fingers, the roughness of rock or the fragility of fallen autumn leaves”(Katie G).

They have a layered, tactile expression, a deep sense of place and an organic quality that all echo our own ethos here at Balance.

As we leave summer behind and return to work and school, here’s some home-office inspiration from our Georgian country house project. Painted in a gentle green called ‘At the Bay’ by @atelier.ellis , it’s separated from the living room by an open shelving unit, dividing the space in two while letting natural light flow throughout. The straight lines of the 18th-century architecture are offset by Fred Rigby’s curvaceous ‘Kidney’ desk, handmade ceramics, a mushroom-shaped travertine and bronze lamp from @audocph and a textural painting by Sydney-based artist @bykatiegraham. The result is a beautiful yet highly functional study that aids focus, creativity and quiet contemplation.
